Junior NHL Players, Hamilton Bulldogs, Olympics and More

Good AM!

So, the NFL settled its dispute with its referees at midnight last night after a few days of intense bargaining sessions.

In fact, mere days earlier one session lasted until 2 am.

Never mind ending this lockout — at least the NHL and NHLPA could stay up late.

Montreal Canadiens call up Aaron Palushaj

The Montreal Canadiens have announced earlier today that they have called up forward Aaron Palushaj to replace injured forward Mike Cammalleri who suffered a deep laceration on his left leg when he was cut by the skate on teammate Yannick Weber during yesterday's 5-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets.

Assigned to the Bulldogs on October, the 22 year-old forward registered two helpers in Hamilton's 5-2 victory in their season opener against the Rochester Americans on October 8 in Hamilton.

Palushaj had a good training camp before his demotion, registering four points (1-3-4) in five preseason games with the Canadiens.

Palushaj's arrival gives the Habs eleven healthy forwards to work with if Yannick Weber is taking Jaroslav Spacek's spot on defense. Spacek left yesterday's contest with a ribs injury. We'll know more about the extent of his injury tomorrow.

Andrei Kostitsyn will take Cammalleri's spot alongside Erik Cole and Tomas Plekanec.

The Canadiens will host the Calgary Flames for their home opener at the Bell Centre, Thursday October 13, 2011.

Canadiens claim Blair Betts, waive Jeff Woywitka

After losing Jeff Halpern and Tom Pyatt in the offseason, the Montreal Canadiens added some depth to their forward units on Wednesday, claiming forward Blair Betts off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Edmonton native, who is fairly imposing at 6-feet-3 and 210 pounds, has played 477 career games with the Flyers, Calgary Flames and New York Rangers, recording 41 goals and 37 assists in the process. The 31-year old centre has also played in 62 playoff contests.

Betts is expected to join the Canadiens in Toronto when they take on the Maple Leafs in their season opener.

To make room for Betts on the roster, the Canadiens placed defenceman Jeff Woywitka on waivers and sent forwards Michael Blunden, Ian Schultz and Aaron Palushaj to the Hamilton Bulldogs. Blunden was placed on waivers yesterday but went unclaimed.

PRESS RELEASE: Habs call up Engqvist, assign Palushaj to Hamilton

Monday, 21.03.2011 / 5:15 PM / News

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens announced Monday that centreman Andreas Engqvist has been recalled from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs, while right winger Aaron Palushaj has been assigned to Hamilton.

The 6’04’’, 197 lbs centreman, aged 23, suited up for two games with the Canadiens this season, including his first NHL contest on January 21 at Ottawa. Engqvist was held pointless, while recording one shot on goal, two hits and three blocked shots and averaging 10:25 minutes of ice time per game.

Engqvist appeared in 62 games with the Bulldogs this season, registering 21 points (8 goals, 13 assists). Two of his goals were scored on the power play. He has collected 122 shots on goal, maintained a +8 plus/minus differential and served 16 penalty minutes.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Engqvist signed with the Canadiens as a free agent on July 13, 2009.

The 21 year old Palushaj suited up for the Canadiens’ last three games, including his first career NHL game, on March 17 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Bell Centre. Palushaj was held pointless, recording three shots on goal and three hits, while playing an average of 8:31 minutes per game.

Palushaj, 21, ranks third on the Bulldogs with 44 points (17 goals, 27 assists) in 57 games this season. Five of his goals have been tallied on the power play. The 5’11’’ and 177 lbs right winger is tied for first on the Bulldogs with a +15 plus/minus differential. He has registered 134 shots on goal and served 30 penalty minutes.

A native of Northville, Michigan, Palushaj was the St. Louis Blues’ fifth pick (second round, 44th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired from the Blues on March 2, 2010, in return for Matt D’Agostini.

Canadiens Game Day: Huge Two Points on the Line in Habs, Lightning Tilt

by Kamal Panesar

You can tell that the playoffs are just around the corner because it seems that every game the Montreal Canadiens play lately is a four-point match.

Tonight is no different as the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning will be visiting the Bell Centre for the fourth and final regular season match between these two clubs.

Tampa took the first two games with Montreal taking the third in Tampa just over ten days ago.

Only four points separate these two teams in the standings.

Standings

Both teams have played 70 games and Montreal is sixth overall in the East with 83 points to the Lightning's fifth overall 87 points, also in 70 games.

A win by the Lightning would give them a nice six-point buffer over Montreal while bringing them to within one point of the fourth overall Penguins. For Montreal, this game is an opportunity to close the gap on the Lightning and the Bruins—Boston also has 87 points.

Goaltending

There is no word yet on which goaltender will start for either team but you would have to think that Carey Price will get the call for Montreal. The Habs are playing again tomorrow in New York against the Rangers and coaches often like to play the backup in the second of back-to-back games, as teams tend to play tighter defensively in front of their backups.

Either way, with the Rangers tomorrow and the Wild on Sunday it is possible that Alex Auld could be in the net as soon as tonight.

For Tampa, despite winning their last game 6-2 against the Leafs, they have been in a free fall since the beginning of March—they are 2-4-2 over their last eight games.

As such, it is a bit of a mystery as to who will be getting the call for Tampa however with Dwayne Roloson getting six of the last eight starts he will likely get the nod.

Scoring and Special Teams

Tonight's contest is a pretty clear-cut matchup of offense versus defense. However given the Habs depleted lineup—Tomas Plekanec and Jeff Halpern joined the team clinic last game—Montreal will be missing some key parts of their defense-first game.

Tampa is a scoring machine averaging a sixth overall 2.9 goals per game and the sixth best power play in the league at 20.7 percent efficiency. On the defensive side of the puck Tampa has the 24th overall goals-against at 2.9 per game and a respectable 11th overall penalty kill at 83.3 percent efficiency.

Montreal's numbers are pretty much reversed with the 23rd overall goals-for at 2.6 per game, the seventh best PP at 19.7 percent, the eighth best goals-against at 2.5 per game and the seventh best PK at 83.9 percent efficiency.

The problem for Montreal is that Plekanec and Halpern are two of their best penalty killers. In addition, Plekanec has been playing the point on the first wave of the PP so his absence from the lineup is a massive loss for the Habs.

Roster Changes and Injuries

The Habs, who seem to lose another player to injury every game, will be playing without Brent Sopel (Day to day), Jaroslav Spacek (Injured reserve), Mathieu Darche (Injured reserve), Andrei Markov (Injured reserve), Josh Gorges (Injured reserve), Max Pacioretty (Injured reserve), Tomas Plekanec (Day to day) and Jeff Halpern (Day to day).

That makes eight regular players that are out of the lineup for Montreal.

Yowza!

Tampa too has their share of problems with Pavel Kubina serving a suspension and Randy Jones (Day to day), Ryan Malone (Injured reserve) and Steve Downie (Day to day) out with injuries.

The major roster changes will be in the Habs camp where Plekanec and Halpern are out and Nigel Dawes and Aaron Palushaj—they were recalled from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs yesterday—will be making their season debuts for Montreal.

Key Matchup

It's pretty simple here: offense versus defense. Although with two of the Habs best defensive players out of the lineup all eyes will be on Dawes and Palushaj to see how they perform.

With no word yet on how Jacques Martin intends to compose his lines tonight, Palushaj in particular will be a player to watch as he could end up seeing time in the top-six.

Game time is at 7:30 PM.

PRESS RELEASE: Habs recall Nigel Dawes, Aaron Palushaj from AHL Hamilton Bulldogs

Wednesday, 16.03.2011 / 3:25 PM / News

MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens announced today that forwards Nigel Dawes and Aaron Palushaj have been recalled from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs. Dawes and Palushaj will join the Canadiens, for tomorrow’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, at the Bell Centre.

Dawes, 26, played in nine games with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2010-11, his fourth NHL season. The 5’09” and 200 lbs left winger recorded one assist while averaging 11:11 of time on ice. He played a total of 208 NHL career regular season games with the Rangers, Phoenix Coyotes, Calgary Flames and Thrashers. He has registered 84 career points (39 goals, 45 assists) and 43 penalty minutes.

Dawes leads the Bulldogs with 54 points (33 goals, 21 assists) in 55 games this season. He ranks first on the team and in the AHL with 33 goals. Nine of his goals have been tallied on the power play and one while shorthanded. He displays a +7 plus/minus differential, has collected 169 shots on goal and served 17 penalty minutes.

Born in Winnipeg, Dawes was a fifth round pick, 149th selection overall, by the New York Rangers in 2003. He was acquired from the Thrashers, along with Brent Sopel, last February 24.

He Said: What Should the Habs Do to Fix the Second Line?

by Willey

It is one quarter of the way into the 2010 NHL season and the Montreal Canadiens appear to be building off of their strong playoff run. It was a playoff run that saw them make it all the way to the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup Finals.

The Habs currently to sit atop the Northeast Division and have thus far proved once again to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, along the likes of the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals.

As a team, the Habs find themselves among the leaders in goals against, on the penalty kill and for the first time in quite a few years, five-on-five scoring.

Individually, Carey Price is among the top five in the entire NHL in wins, shutouts, save percentage, goals against average and believe it or not points among goaltenders.

Our defensive core, despite losing it's best player in Andrei Markov to what looks like a season ending injury, continue to do a splendid job shutting down the opposition to the point where they are the only team who are yet to give up more than three goals in a game.

Offensively the number one line consisting of Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Kostitsyn and Brian Gionta are firing on all cylinders, propelling us to victory after victory. In addition, both our third and fourth lines have provided timely goal scoring and a defensive presence whenever called upon to do so.

What to do with the "malaise de Scott Gomez!"

Despite the success of the team as a whole, there remains a gaping hole in what is supposed to be our second line; the unit consisting of Mike Cammalleri, Scott Gomez and Travis Moen.

I don’t know about you, but I'm a big fan of Travis Moen. Unfortunately for him and for this team however, he is not a second line player.

Yes he is a big strong Saskatchewan boy who does all the little things right, but Travis has at no point of either his junior or pro career scored more than 11 goals in a season. Moreover, as an NHLer he has a career best of just 21 points in one season.

How can we justify placing our two highest paid players on the same line with a career fourth liner and expect the unit to gel and succeed. Simply put, they cannot.

If this team wants to take themselves from a good team who can play against anyone in this league; to a team that can contend for the Stanley Cup then the second line needs to be addressed and quickly.

The million dollar question, Part I, is how do we fix it?

The way I see it, Pierre Gauthier has three options. Either we continue to shuffle the lines until we find the right combination; we make a call up for a player playing in the AHL or we bring in a person to fill that roll via trade or UFA signing.

Shuffle the Deck

Let me throw out a little question: What do Michael Cammalleri, Benoit Pouliot, Mathieu Darche, Tom Pyatt, Andrei Kostitsyn, Brian Gionta, Travis Moen and Maxim Lapierre all have in common?

This is the list of wingers that in just 24 games have all been paired with Scott Gomez in hopes of trying to get our second line center “going”. To my count, that leaves just Lars Eller and Dustin Boyd as the only two wingers who have not had the opportunity at second line duty this season.

Have we not exhausted every attempt to find Gomez a winger? Is it not time to start looking for a solution down the middle instead of trying to find some answers on the wing?

With the sudden emergence of Lars Eller in all facets of the game perhaps it is time to see what he can do when presented with premiere players with premiere ice time.

So if the solution is going to come from within the dressing room then I am proposing something drastic: Move Gomez from the second line center and place him on the wing.

Allow him to play those top minutes and be let him keep being creative with the puck, but take away the important defensive responsibilities that come with being a center.

Allow Eller—who is bigger and stronger than Gomez, and who has a better faceoff percentage—to be responsible for the draws and the defensive zone coverage down low. Isolate Gomez on the defensive side of the puck and ask him to focus on the offensive side of the game.

I mean we’ve tried everything else, it only seems logical to try this variation.

Call for reinforcements

The second most obvious answer to this ongoing woe is to make the call to Randy Cunneyworth and bring up someone from the farm team.

The short list includes the likes of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty, Aaron Palushaj, Ryan White and Ben Maxwell all of whom are having a good year playing for Bulldogs.

But who among them can truly help our squad?

As much as I would love to see White on this team, he is not a top-six player in the NHL and would certainly not be able to help our second line. Fourth line duty would be ideal but that is an entirely different debate for another day.

Maxwell is a player who, despite his offensive abilities, has done absolutely nothing at the NHL level, having scored zero points in 20 games. He has had the opportunity in the past but for some reason just does not appear ready.

Desharnais is an incredibly gifted offensive player, but when your entire top line and two thirds of your second line are all less than 6’0, then calling up yet another player in this mold is not the answer. Desharnais is an NHLer just not on the Habs.

The conundrum therefore comes down to ex-Michigan teammates and now Bulldogs line mates: Palushaj and Pacioretty—and I like how both of these guys play the game.

They are each 6’0 or taller, are both scoring at a point per game pace in the AHL and are both proverbial “North-South” players who skate hard down the wing and drive to the net. In short, they are the exact types of players we need.

So the million dollar question Part II is, who should get the call up?

I say why limit this to just one player? Why not call up both? Why not bring them up as a pair and have one play on either side of Gomez or mold the line of the future with the two AHLer’s playing on either side of Eller?

These two kids have played together during their NCAA careers and have thus far proved more than effective playing alongside one another in the AHL.

Let’s give them a shot because as mentioned above, we’ve tried everything else.

New blood

Assuming the injury to Markov is long term and using the Long Term Injury Reserve (LTIR), we will have the ability to play with about $5.75 million in additional cap space. This situation will allow Montreal to replace the salary with any other player in the league as long as Markov remains on LTIR.

In essence we can sign a player or trade for a player and not have to worry about the cap restraints. The ideal situation for a team in need of scoring!

With teams like the NJ Devils, Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins currently playing right against the cap maximum, and with players on their rosters set to return to play, they face issues and hard choices. This presents Montreal with the opportunity of acquiring one or two fairly big salaried players without having to give up much in return.

With such names as Blake Wheeler, Jamie Langenbrunner, Travis Zajac, Kevin Bieksa, and Michael Samuelsson apparently all available, acquiring a player with size does not appear to be an issue.

How does acquiring Samuelsson and Bieksa in exchange for relatively little in return sound? Not too fond of that idea? Why not make a pitch to the struggling San Jose Sharks to lure a Ryane Clowe or Devon Setoguchi? The possibilities are endless!

So the million dollar question Part III is, who do you acquire?

The NJ Devils are in the biggest world of hurt having to shed roughly $3.5 million in salary. Furthermore the Devils have a history of making drastic decisions for short term gains. Remember the year they traded a first round pick along with Vladimir Malakhov to the San Jose Sharks for a song? I do.

I say you make a pitch for soon to be UFA forward Jamie Langenbrunner, who apparently has issues with John MacLean, and bring him in to town along with a veteran D-man like Colin White.

If it were up to me I would add to the deal and see if we could get the Devils to throw in a player like Adam Henrique, who again would fill a need that the Habs currently have.

In exchange, we could send Dustin Boyd, who appears destined for the Martin doghouse, along with a decent mid-level prospect like a Yannick Weber or a Ben Maxwell. Heck, it is the season for giving, so I would even include both!

Is this a move the Devils would make? Right now this is impossible to answer but they are going to have to make some very tough decisions, and right now Langenbrunner appears to be the odd man out.

So there you have it folks, three possible outcomes to how this conundrum is going to unfold. Round and round and round this wheel of uncertainty turns, and where it stops absolutely nobody knows.

Until next time.
