Pregame Preview: Canadiens at Blackhawks (Game #80)

montreal canadiens vs chicago blackhawks nhl
Match Up:

The Canadiens (45-27-7) are in Chicago Wednesday to visit the defending champion Blackhawks (45-19-5) in Montreal's final road game of the season. The game starts at 7:30 and airs on RDS and TSN.

This is the second and final game between the Habs and Hawks this season, Montreal earned a 2-1 OT win in the first match. Andrei Markov scored both goals for the Habs the first time these teams met and Carey Price made 19 save for the win as the Canadiens held the Hawks to just 20 shots in the game.

What to Watch:

Max Pacioretty was named the NHL's Third Star last week after putting up 4 goals and 6 points, 5 of them in the Habs' 7-4 win over the Sens. 9 of Pacioretty's 39 goals on the season have come in his last 8 games. PK Subban has been held under 20 minutes of ice time in his last 3 games, and has been held pointless in each of them.

With Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews on the sidelines, Patrick Sharp will likely finish the season as Chicago's leading scorer. Sharp has 33 goals and 43 assists for a career high 76 point on the year. With 60 points and a +21 rating, Duncan Keith is making a strong case for Norris Trophy consideration, although with 3 assists in his last 6 games, Keith has cooled off a bit as the season winds down.

What's at Stake:

The Canadiens are 4 points away from home ice advantage through the first round with 3 games to play. With back-to-back games coming up, and a Lightning game against the Flyers on Thursday, the Canadiens have multiple scenarios that would see them clinch.

Who's Out:

A couple of healthy Canadiens won't be making the trip to Chicago with the team, including the defensive pair of Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin. Carey Price has the night off as well, while Brandon Prust (upper body) and Travis Moen (concussion) are also out. Josh Gorges will return to action Wednesday and Dale Weise (wrist) may be ready to play as well.

The Blackhawks are missing arguably their two best players for Wednesday's game. Jonathan Toews (upper body) and Patrick Kane (lower body) are both out, as is backup goalie Nikolai Khabibulin (rotator cuff).

What Else:

With Markov missing Wednesday's game, his streak of 137 straight regular season games played will come to an end. PK Subban is the only other Hab this season to play all 79 games so far, his Ironman streak is up to 131 consecutive games played.

The Question Mark:

Who are your Little Bear and Doghouse Habs players for the season?

Pregame Preview: Canadiens vs Blackhawks (Game #46)

montreal canadiens vs chicago blackhawks nhl
Match Up:

The Canadiens (25-15-5) are at home Saturday night to play host the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks (29-8-9). The game starts at 7:00 and airs on RDS and CBC.

This is the first of two meetings between the original six rivals, the haven't faced each other in over two years, stretching back to December 2011. Despite the Canadiens scoring first in that game, the Hawks beat the Habs handily by a final score of 5-1.

What to Watch:

Tomas Plekanec scored the only Canadiens goal in Philly on Wednesday, extending his point streak to 3 games. Linemate Brian Gionta also has a 3-game points streak going, the captain is up to 23 points in 44 games.

Carey Price should be back between the pipes for the Habs Saturday night, he has a 6-1-2 record in his last 9 games, stretching back to mid-December.

The Hawks are in the midst of a mini-slump, at least by their standards. The team is 1-1-2 in their last 4 and Patrick Kane, their leading scorer, has just 1 assist in that span. Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews both have 4-game point streaks going. Sharp had a hat-trick against the Devils last Friday, leading the Hawks to their only win in the last 4.

What's at Stake:

If the Canadiens want to prove they are a serious contender in this league, the Chicago Blackhawks are the perfect team to make that point against. The Hawks are on pace for just under 120 points this season and they lead the league in goals per game. On the other side of things, Montreal is fourth in terms of goals allowed per game, so Saturday's match will provide a real test to the Habs' defensive mettle.

Who's Out:

The Habs are missing Alex Galchenyuk (hand), Ryan White (upper body) and defenseman Davis Drewiske (shoulder).

The Blackhawks are just missing Nikolai Khabibulin (shoulder).

What Else:

The Blackhawks may have won 2 of the last 4 Stanley Cups, but they still have a ways to go before the catch Montreal's totals. One of the NHL's original six teams, the Hawks have had ample opportunity to bring home their fair share of Cups, but the team has only won hockey's ultimate prize 5 times since they joined the league in 1926. The Canadiens have won a league best 24 Stanley Cups, but haven't taken home a championship in over 20 years.

The Question Mark:

We want to hear from you, what were your expectations for the Habs this season and are you satisfied with their performance up to now?

NHL 2013-2014 Conference Previews – Central

Paolo Mingarelli dives into the next conference out West, the Central, home of the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks.

The Central division, as it stands, could be the host of the Western Conference Final. The Blackhawks and Blues are expected to make post-season appearances and will do so while making the seasons challenging for their division rivals. Much progress is being made by teams who have recently finished in the bottom tier of the NHL standings, of which 3 teams are located in the Central.

Michel Therrien Robbed Of Jack Adams Candidacy

Therrien Left Off Of The Jack Adams Ballot

With Michel Therrien not in the running, expect Paul Maclean
of the Ottawa Senators to take home the Jack adams Trophy.
With P.K. Subban named as a finalist for the Norris Trophy, Brendan Gallagher being considered for the Calder as the league's top rookie and Marc Bergevin being what should be a shoe in for the GM of the year it was expected that Michel Therrien would round up the list of Habs nominees as the coach of the year.

Apparently not.

Bruce Boudreau of the Anaheim Ducks, Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks and Paul "I am the walrus" MacLean of the Ottawa Senators were named as the finalists on Friday for the Jack Adams Trophy as the leagues top coach.

This article is not meant to take away from any of thess bench bosses as they are all deserving of having their work behind the bench recognized.

And Here Are Your Nominees...

Bruce Boudreau, who won the award in 2007-08 with the Washingotn Capitals, worked wonders in Anaheim as he lead the Ducks to the number two seed in the Western conference after having missed the playoffs in 2013. Again, not to take away from his accomplishment but Boudreau had some help along the way from the likes of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan to name a few. Having one of the top lines in the NHL goes a long way in finishing on top and a more than capable one-two punch in goal with Jonas Hiller and Viktor Fasth wouldn't hurt anybody's chances.

It's hard to argue against Joel Quenneville's nomination after watching his troops start the season by earning points in their first 24 games. That's half of the shortened 2013 season. If the Ducks roster shares Boudreau's credit for his success it's hard to imagine the Hawks finishing anywhere other than first overall even if it was a monkey, Rob Ford or Jacques Martin calling the shots.

Quenneville won the award in 1999-2000 with the St. Louis Blues, so there is no argument that he is a capable coach. I just feel that with a team boasting the likes of Jonathan Toewes, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp, Brent Seasbrook and Duncan Keith as well as Corey Crawford and Ray Emery between the pipes it would be more of a challenge not to finish on top of the league.

Paul Maclean is more than worth of his nomination and will more than likely take home the award. In fact, if Therrien were to be named as a finalist it wouldn't come as a shock if he lost it to MacLean.

The Senators played the majority of their season without their top defenceman in Erik Karlsson, their first line center Jason Spezza and one of the league's top goalies Craig Anderson. The absence of Milan Michalek for 25 games sure didn't help. MacLean however managed to shock the hockey world by leading his injury riddled team to the playoffs as the seventh seed in the Eastern conference.

The Therrien Argument

While it takes more than a stacked roster to find success in the NHL, it seems that finding the success that Therrien managed to get out of his troops with much less to work with than two of the three candidates should've at least earned him a nomination.

The goal here is not to make the Canadiens out to be a group of imcompetant players that would make up the first half of a Mighty Ducks movie before coach Bombay works his magic. The Habs after all do boast one of the league's top defenseman in P.K. Subban. Carey Price played very well in the first three quarters of the season and while Montreal doesn't have the firepower up front to match Chicago or Anaheim, they do have depth and could provide scoring from any line on any given night.

My argument is that Therrien simply had less to work with and with less time. Due to the lockout Therrien was thrown behind the bench of a team that finished 15th in their conference and 28th overall without even having the luxury of a training camp. The lockout came to an end on January sixth and thirteen days later the Habs played their first game.

Therrien had just under two weeks, with no pre-season games, to work with a team that he hadn't coached in ten years. while the lockout effected every player and every coach in the league, MacLean, Boudreau and Quenneville were at least familiar with the teams that were playing for them.

Lars Eller

The most impressive turnaround on the Habs was that of Lars Eller. Before the season was underway, Therrien stated that he was a fan of Lars Eller's and was expecting this year to be a breakout season for the young Dane. After one game, Therrien was not getting the results he wanted and sat Eller for the following two contests. When Eller returned to the ice he never looked back and enjoyed his best season in his young career.

Eller's 30 points were a career high surpassing his previous best of 28 in 2011-12. It should be noted that he reached the 30 point mark despite playing 33 fewer games than he did in the previous year. Eller also brought his +/- from -5 in 2011-12 to a +8 showing that he didn't limit his improvements to only one end of the ice.

The Gally's

While the limited minutes given to the Canadien's top prospects infuriated many fans in Habs nation it didn't seem to stunt their growth as players. Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk each finished third and fifth respectively in rookie scoring, second and sixth in goals scored, fifth and fourth in +/- and yet their average ice time of 13:51 and 12:19 placed them 12th and 24th among rookie forwards with at least ten games played.

In a city that applies too much pressure on any promising prospect and an organization that has mishandled their fair share, Therrien found a way to get the most out of the young stud's without putting the pressure of top line minutes on them. Placing them on a line with a character player and well respected leader in the dressing room in Brandon Prust in the beginning of the season seemed to pay dividends as they gained confidence early on and never looked back.

And The Winner Is...

Paul MacLean.

I will not change my mind in my argument that Therrien was unfairly snubbed of a nomination he deserved. However, even if he was a candidate I wouldn't be too upset if he lost to Paul MacLean after what the Ottawa bench boss managed to pull of this season in the nation's capital.

If the choice was yours, who would be your top three finalists and who would take home the hardware?

Why Brendan Gallagher should Win The Calder Trophy

Will The Canadiens Have Their First Calder Trophy Winner Since Ken Dryden In 71-72?

After being a healthy scratch in the Montreal Canadiens season opener, rookie Brendan Gallagher fought his way onto the roster with his fiesty character and hard work and never looked back.

In a season that had a healthy crop of Calder Trophy candidates including Nail Yakupov, the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, and Gallagher's teammate Alex Galchenyuk (picked third overall in 2012), Brendan Gallagher should be the safe bet to take home the Calder Trophy. Habs' Brendan Gallagher finished his rookie campaign with 15 goals and 13 helpers to go with a +10 rating.

Being a Hab fan myself I can see how some may say I'm biased. The truth of the matter however, is that Gallagher brought more to his team than his fellow nominees.

Gallagher's Calder Competition

In no way am I trying to take away from either Brandon Saad or Jonathan Huberdeau. Both rookies displayed tremendous talent and have bright futures ahead of them in the NHL.

Brandon Saad of the Chicago Blackhawks finished fourth among rookies in scoring with 27 points in 46 games and first among first year players with a +17 rating. Saad averaged 16:27 minutes of ice time per game (third among rookie forwards) on a President's Trophy winning team that boasts the likes of Jonathan Toewes, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa and Patrick sharp just to name a few.

Nobody is doubting that Saad is one of the top rookies in the NHL, but the cast he plays alongside certainly doesn't hurt his development. It's hard to imagine the Blackhawks suffering too much in the standings without Saad in the line-up.

Jonathan Huberdeau is one heck of a player and undoubtedly has a promising future ahead of him. Out of the three finalists for the Calder Trophy, Huberdeau is though of by many to be the best in the longrun. Huberdeau finished his season tied in first with Edmonton Oilers prospect Nail Yakupov for points among rookies with 31 points in 41 games. His 14 goals put him third behind only Yakupov and Gallagher.

Huberdeau's -15 rating is nothing to write home about but when you average16:55 minutes per game - unmatched by any other rookie forward - on the lowly Florida Panthers (the Panthers finished 30th overall) it would be asking a little much for a top quality plus/minus rating.

While he didn't have the roster that Saad had to play alongside, Huberdeau's stellar introduction into the NHL did little for his team overall.

Head Of The Class

And now for Gallagher...

Montreal's nominee for the Calder, the (expletive) disturbing fireball with a pesky smile that 90% of the league wants to slap right off of his face, managed to have an incredibly impressive season with less to work with.

Gallagher managed to finish third among rookie scorers with 28 points in 44 games, his 15 games had him behind only Nail Yakupov and his +10 rating was good enough for fifth among rookie skaters. Gallagher pulled those numbers off on a team that doesn't come close to matching the linemates Saad played. Not to mention if Gallagher took the season off, it would be a safe bet that the Canadiens would not have won their division, jumped to second overall in the East and eased their way into the post season after finishing last place in the Eastern Conference the previous year.

Huberdeau also lacked the all star support that Saad enjoyed but was unable to help his team rise in the standings. And unlike Huberdeau, Gallagher saw an average of only 13:51 minutes per game which would put him 13th among rookie forwards who've played at least ten games.

A Quick Recap

While Saad, Huberdeau and Gallagher all enjoyed stellar seasons, Gallagher brought the most to his team while having less to work with in terms of support (Saad and his first place Hawks) and time on ice (Huberdeau and his top sik minutes).

To simplify things if the three candidates were to have sat out the season the Hawks would win their conference still and - probably the President's trophy - and the Panthers would more than likely remain in the basement....no changes there.

The Habs however would be hard pressed to make the playoffs let alone win their division and keep up at the Penguins pace for the better part of the season.

There is no doubt in my mind that the stats Gallagher managed to put up with minimal ice time on a team that had no business succeeding as much as they did should be enough to earn Brendan Gallager the 2013 Calder Trophy.

NHL CBA Hope?, Northeast Fantasy Preview, Seattle and More

Good AM hockey fans!

Is that a slight glimmer of hope in the distance?

After standing off for the better part of the week, the NHL and NHLPA are to meet today and tomorrow in last ditch efforts at negotiations.

Of course, perhaps this is only for show. After all, it would look mighty silly to let the current CBA expire without at least engaging in last minute discussions.

Then again, maybe there is cause for hope. As Scott Burnside points out, contrary to 2004, owners do not all have the stomach to turn the lights off yet again. This time around, many clearly benefit from starting the season on time.

It's a valid argument. I'm not sure the Minnesota Wild would be too thrilled giving $24 million in guaranteed signing bonuses to Ryan Suter and Zach Parise only to cancel parts of the season. Or that the Los Angeles Kings want to halt their cup-winning momentum. Or that big earners like Montreal, Toronto and New York want their cash registers to quiet.

So, keeping up appearances or genuine reason for hope? Only time will tell.

Panesar and Moustakas: Marc Bergevin's First Priority?

Marc Bergevin - Montreal Canadiens Introduce Marc Bergevin As General Manager
Your new favorite debate duo returns after a brief hiatus.

This week's topic? Marc Bergevin's appointment as General Manager and the many tasks on his plate.

Louis Moustakas: Hello my friend.

Well, unless you have been living under a rock without a wireless internet connection, everyone and their grandmother knows that Marc Bergevin has been named the Montreal Canadiens' new General Manager. '

While his appointment is a definite step forward, many challenges await the rookie manager. What to do with his impending free agents, namely P.K Subban and Carey Price? How does he rebuild the organization's waning depth? How does he re-structure the front office? Who does he add to the coaching staff? What to do with the team's egregious cap structure?

Needless to say, many key decisions need to be made.

With that in mind, what do you think Bergevin's first priority should be?

Kamal Panesar: Well that really is the million dollar question, isn’t it? There is the draft to prepare for, the hiring of a coach and filling out his executive staff, namely adding an Assistant GM (AGM). Out of all the task ahead of Bergevin, however, I feel that he needs to add an AGM as soon as he can.

The volume of work and contracts in front of Bergevin is staggering, and what better way to start tackling them than by bringing on board a right hand man.

While there are no shortage of AGMs out there, I think one man’s name naturally floats to the top of the list:

Rick Dudley.

Currently serving a term as one of several big names seconding Brian Burke in the Leafs’ head office, Dudley and Bergevin have a long history together. Also, I think that Dudley would welcome a chance to be more of a linchpin with the Habs rather than just one of many with the Leafs’.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, it now seems that the hiring of Dudley as Bergevin’s AGM is all but a fait accompli. The hold up? Brian Burke, understandably, doesn’t want Dudley to defect before the draft, but rather afterwards.

The last word was that the two sides are in negotiations, but draft or not, you’ve got to think that Bergevin wants to put his AGM in place asap.

Louis Moustakas: Staggering is the word. So much remains to be done.

As much as I agree that the front office team should be finalized as soon as possible, I feel that his first priority — at least from a player personnel perspective — is to sort out the Scott Gomez situation. The centre's contract weighs heavily on the team, both in terms of the salary cap and as a distraction.

Until this issue meets a certain finality, the organization will continue to be hampered by Gomez and his egregious contract. With so many impending free agents, the team's salary structure must be solidified rapidly. By leaving this unresolved, how can the organization possibly make informed decisions regarding its player personnel? It seems like you need to know where you stand before you can know where you are going.

In other words, before you even submit an offer to Carey Price or P.K Subban, the Alaskan forward needs to be taken care of.

Beyond that, ridding themselves of the Gomez deal would show Canadiens' fans that the organization is taking another major departure for the insuccess of 2011-12.

Kamal Panesar: Without a doubt, the Scott Gomez contract needs to be dealt with. This new regime simply can’t start the next season with him still on the roster, and expect anyone to take them seriously. That being said, while his cap hit is definitely a consideration, I disagree that it is a rush to get something done.

Why?

Well, because it is a given that Gomez will either be demoted to Hamilton or bought out, the latter taking place only if there is some kind of amnesty clause or period with the new CBA that should be implemented this summer. As such, why worry about taking care of that now?

I would just operate as if he is off the books — this, of course, assumes that the Gomez discussion was part of the hiring process and that Bergevin has Geoff Molson’s approval to demote him to Hamilton.

That being said, in my opinion, I think he must get an AGM, first, and a coach second. It’s amazing how quick things change too, since yesterday morning it was reported that Bergevin was working on bringing Dudley over and now, it seems that Joel Quenneville will end up being the coach.

If that’s the case, I like the move. But man, does this guy more fast or what?

Louis Moustakas: Operate as if he were off the books?

But he isn't! And assuming amnesty and assuming you will have X amount of cap space is a dangerous game, especially if your estimations are proven to be incorrect. In addition, with a new CBA on the horizon, such assumptions become ever more dangerous.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the point of fleshing out the front office first. However, in terms of players, Gomez must be dealt with immediately.

Not only does dealing with this allow for clarity in terms of both the salary cap and the roster, but it also removes an important distraction. Why wait until near training camp to resolve this? Why not be done with the inevitable media storm his demotion or buy-out will provoke in the relative quiet of summer?

Plus, riding the organization of Gomez sends a message that the Canadiens are willing and able to use all means at their disposal to become better. That is a good message for UFAs.

As for the Quenneville issue, he somewhat looks on the outs in Chicago. Regardless, the question always is, can he speak French? If hired soon enough, he will have all summer to take a crash course.

Kamal Panesar: On Quenneville, yes, he does speak French and yes, he does seem to be on the outs a little with Chicago GM, Stan Bowman. That being said, he also has two more years left on his contract so Bergevin will have to do one hell of a sell job to get him in Montreal!

On the Gomez front, I agree that it must be dealt with, but I don’t think it should be Bergevin’s top priority right now. My point was only that you assume that he will either be demoted, with his salary off the cap, or bought out through an amnesty clause, with no cap hit.

Either way, it is (or at least should be) a certainty that he is not on the roster next Fall. And I wouldn’t necessarily advocate waiting till September to take care of the matter, I simply don’t feel that it needs to be done in the next 30 days or so.

For me, right now, you hire an AGM, you hire a coach, you fill out your executive staff and, in the process, you take care of player personnel. Honestly, I think signing Carey Price and P.K. Subban to extensions is more urgent than getting rid of Gomez.

Since there is no road-block to sending Gomez to the AHL, you operate as if he will be demoted to Hamilton, and act as if you have that extra $7-plus million to spend…and spend it!

What about the rest of you? What would your first order of business be?

Quick Picks: Western Conference Quarterfinals

Roberto Luongo - Boston Bruins v Vancouver Canucks - Game Two
After revealing my picks for the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, I will continue my exercise by looking at the four series in the Western Conference.

Vancouver Canucks (1) vs. Los Angeles Kings (8)

My pick: Vancouver Canucks in six games

Why? Los Angeles simply cannot score. In fact, they are downright brutal, sitting 29th overall in league scoring.

If it weren’t for Jonathan Quick – who should probably win the Vezina but won’t by virtue of playing on the West Coast – this team could have easily been in last night’s lottery conversation.

And, after 82 games of offensive ineptitude, it is a tad unreasonable to expect the Darryl Sutter led Kings to suddenly find their scoring touch.

Conversely, Vancouver has been one of the most consistent teams in the league, sitting in the top-six in important categories such as goals for, shots for, goals against and special teams.

While the dual-headed monster of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider may cause controversy down the road, it seems unlikely that the goal-challenged Kings will stoke those fires.

St. Louis Blues (2) vs. San Jose Sharks

My pick: San Jose Sharks in seven games

Why? The Blues are playing with the pressure of expectation now, which may not necessarily suit this still young squad.

Conversely, the Sharks – who have often crumbled under said expectations – are playing with house money, having barely squeaked into the post-season themselves.

For all of St. Louis' goaltending and defensive achievements – they allow the fewest shots in the league and commit the fewest giveaways – scoring may also be problematic for Ken Hitchcock’s squad.

David Backes leads his team with a rather conservative 52 points and is their only forward to reach the 50-point plateau.

Should the Sharks be able to shut down Backes’ unit, then it could prove exceedingly difficult for the Blues to get the necessary offense to prevail.

Phoenix Coyotes (3) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (6)

My pick: Phoenix Coyotes in seven games

Why? As a Chicago native, it is difficult for me to hide my preference for a Chicago victory.

Yet, when looking at the situation dispassionately, the shaky goaltending situation in the Windy City is an obstacle that cannot be easily overlooked.

Both Corey Crawford and Ray Emery’s save percentages hover at .900 and their numbers contrast starkly with Mike Smith’s shining statistics, which include a .930 percentage and eight shutouts.

It would also be foolish to believe that the Blackhawks’ offense can overpower the Coyotes. No doubt, the Hawks’ attack is more potent, but with only four players above the 50-point plateau, their scoring is not nearly as balanced as it once was and their powerplay is a dismal 27th overall. Simply put, they are not the same dynamic, attack-oriented team they were in 2010.

With Mike Smith’s excellent goaltending and blueliners like Keith Yandle and Oliver Ekman-Larson, the Coyotes have the ability to neutralize the Hawks. Offensively, they should be able to squeak by on their scoring-by-committee approach, especially if Crawford or Emery concedes the weak goal or two.

Nashville Predators (4) vs. Detroit Red Wings (5)

My pick: Nashville Predators in seven games

Why? These teams are ridiculously close. Separated by a mere two points in the standings, their offensive and defensive numbers are also distinguishable by only the thinnest of margins. Even the season series between the two does not offer any great clues, with each squad winning three contests.

However, if it is true that special teams and goaltending win series, than the Predators have what it takes to prevail.

Nashville ranks first overall in power play efficiency and is the tenth best team on the penalty kill. Meanwhile, Detroit has been surprisingly abysmal in both categories, ranking in the bottom half in each.

In addition, of all the first round series, home ice could prove to be most important in this one. Detroit has been subpar on the road, posting a 17-21-3 record. To put that in perspective, those 37 road points are only slightly better than Montreal’s yield of 36 road points.

After 82 games of road woes, the raucous Bridgestone Arena does not seem like the ideal place to correct the situation, does it?

Assuming Nashville’s offense does not go ice-cold as it did in their series against the Vancouver Canucks in 2011, there should be enough scoring to power past the always dangerous Red Wings.

What are your predictions for the Western Conference?

NHL Trade Deadline Bait: Montreal Canadiens' Travis Moen

Travis Moen - Montreal Canadiens v Chicago BlackhawksThere is a definite scent of wheeling and dealing in the air. The Trade Deadline looms as pundits and fans contemplate the different options that present themselves to the Montreal Canadiens.
At HabsAddict, we will also take the time to muse over the various possible maneuvers the Habs may make. In a multi-part series, we will look at both potential trade bait as well as possible targets for the Tricolore.

Today, we start with Travis Moen, who appears to be one of the team's most likely trade candidates.

Why he could be traded - Travis Moen is an impending unrestricted free agent on a team that is clearly going into sell mode. On top of that, his spot can be easily replaced internally - and more cheaply - by the returning Ryan White.

Nonetheless, as far as rentals go, he is probably one the Habs' best assets. He was a defensive force in Anaheim's run to a Stanley Cup in 2007, completing a formidable checking line with Rob Niedermayer and Samuel Pahlson.

This season, he is posting his best offensive campaign and is on pace to break his previous career high of 21 points. Plus, at 6-2, 215 pounds, the winger is also a physical presence who is unafraid to engage in fisticuffs if necessary.

His experience, size and secondary scoring make him an excellent depth acquisition for a team wanting to make a post-season run.

What he could be worth - Between a second round draft pick (or equivalent prospect) and a third round draft pick (or equivalent prospect)

The Canadiens have the advantage in a market that appears to benefit sellers. While a second round pick may seem high, it is not unrealistic.

In recent trade deadlines, similar depth players such as Eric Belanger and Dominic Moore were acquired for second round draft picks.

Others, such as Jeff Halpern, Chris Higgins and Daniel Carcillo were even obtained in exchange for multiple picks and players.

Based on previous history, it is even plausible to see the Canadiens obtain a lower draft pick and a roster player in return, but that may be hoping for a bit too much.

Who could be interested - Chicago, Vancouver, Detroit, Pittsburgh

Most contending teams look to add players of Travis Moen's type. However, the above four have been rumored to be interested in his services for some time.

Chicago has lost Daniel Carcillo for the season, so it is logical that they would be looking to replace his physical presence.

The same logic applies in Pittsburgh, who currently have Aaron Asham and Tyler Kennedy on their injured list.

As for Detroit and Vancouver, they have their minor bumps as well, but they are mostly believed to be looking to add a physical presence to their bottom-six.

What do you think? Where will Moen go? And for what price?

Habs/Jets post game, Hawks Cup favorites, Power Rankings, Rumours and more

Happy Friday Habs addicts!

Although if you're a fan of the Habs I'm sure there's nothing that's making you very happy right now.

Montreal dropped their fifth straight game, last night, a 4-0 blanking at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets. And man did they look bad in the process.

It looks like Carey Price is the only player who is showing up on a regular basis.

In other news, Adam Proteau looks at the Blackhawks as Stanley Cup favorites, Jonas Spiegel discusses Joffrey Lupul and much more.

Canadiens/Blackhawks Post-Game, Language, Sweden Cheating and More

Corey Crawford - Montreal Canadiens v Chicago Blackhawks
Good morning Habs fans!  Do you have Chelsea Dagger in your heads this morning?
I don't.

But, then again, I stopped watching after the third Hawks goal.

Unprofessional for someone who writes about the Habs on a daily basis? A little bit, for sure.

Even writers get tired of losing and lackluster performances.

At least there is still reason to hope for the future. Not the imeediate future. No one really expects the Canadiens to string together a long series of wins.

Rather, hope for the mid and long-term. With three Canadiens' prospects — Michael Bournival, Nathan Beaulieu and Brendan Gallagher — on Team Canada's WJC squad as well as Jarred Tinordi representing the United States and Daniel Pribyl suiting up for the Czech Republic, the Christmas tournament should be especially interesting for the Habs faithful.

Speaking of which, Michael Bournival signed an ELC with Montreal yesterday.

Canadiens/Blackhawks, Language, Sabres and More

Jonathan Toews - Chicago Blackhawks v Pittsburgh Penguins
Good morning Hab addicts.

The Canadiens have quite a challenge ahead, facing off against the almighty Blackhawks tonight.

Jonathan Toews is having a Hart-worthy campaign. Marian Hossa has been on a tear with 37 points. Former Senator Ray Emery has wrestled away the starting position from Montreal native Corey Crawford.

And yet, with all of these captivating story lines, all we are focused is the language of the coach.

The Ten Most Expensive Defensive Units In The NHL: Habs not there

NHL General Managers all use different philosophies to build their teams.

Some, like George McPhee in Washington, build their team with a lot of offensive punch, while others, such as the Minnesota Wild, prefer to use a strong goaltending tandem.

Others still prefer to build their team with a very deep defensive corps.

Two months into the 2011-12 season, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the top-10 most expensive defensive brigades in the NHL and where they rank overall.

I’ll use the top seven defensemen of each team as a reference and will take the financial numbers from CapGeek.com.

Players that are injured are included in the calculation.

1. Philadelphia Flyers – $24,33 millions 25 games 15 wins 7 losses 3 OTL 33 points (5th EC)

Jason Demers – $1,250,000
Jim Vandermeer – $1,000,000
Colin White – $1,000,000

In comparison, the league-leading Minnesota Wild with 37 points, are spending only $12.36 millions on their defensive brigade.

As you can see, there is no guarantee of success even if you spend a lot of money on your defensive unit. In fact, amongst the biggest blueline spenders, only the Chicago Blackhawks lead their division.

2010-11 rankings
1. Philadelphia Flyers – $24,89M
2. Toronto Maple Leafs – $24.28M
3. Vancouver Canucks – $23.35M
4. Detroit Red Wings – $21.83M
5. Calgary Flames – $21.59M

10 Summer Thoughts

by Louis Moustakas

Although I am preparing to jaunt off for a short vacation to British Columbia, a part of the country I have yet to visit, my mind still finds way to veer towards the Canadiens and the NHL as a whole.

1) People in Montreal are ridiculously harsh on Andrei Kostitsyn. He is a scorer and he is streaky. Get used to it. He also produces 20 goals a year, is big and led his team in hits last season. Forwards like that do not grow on trees. He certainly has untapped potential, but it is nonetheless a mistake for us to take him for granted.

2) Speaking of Andrei, I must admit his performance in this spring's World Championships was a tad worrisome. His 7 points in 5 games may have led his squad, but he was pointless in key games against Switzerland and France, two teams the Belarussian needed to beat in order to avoid the relegation round.

3) Montreal added the Swiss-born Raphael Diaz and Alain Berger in the off-season. Yannick Weber is already on the squad while both David Aebischer and Mark Streit have spent time with the Habs as well. Clearly, the organization is trying to build its presence in the rising hockey nation of Switzerland. And why not? The Swiss men's team is now ranked 7th in the world, ahead of both Germany and Slovakia. Perhaps Montreal can become to Swiss players what Detroit is to Swedes.

4) I have read some rumours that Montreal is considering adding Alexei Yashin. While I feel he does quite not merit the level of disdain he has, he does not truly address any pressing need on the squad either.

5) Speaking of Russians, Alexei Kovalev is still a free-agent. I am midly surprised we have not heard that many Kovalev to Montreal rumours thus far.

6) Florida signed a ridiculous number of players to ridiculous contracts this summer. Mind you, many were good additions and they will probably be a better team. At the same time, it seems like Tallon is throwing spaghetti at a wall and hoping it sticks.

7) Chicago made low-key, savvy moves this summer. Andrew Brunette and Rostislav Olesz give them legitimate top-6 threats and fit that role much better than the departed Tomas Kopecky.

8) Lou Lamoriello is past his prime. Coming out of the work stoppage, he gave a first-round pick to the Sharks in order to rid himself of Vladimir Malakhov's onerous contract. He was stiffly penalized by the league for the Kovalchuk deal. In truth, it seems like he has spent each summer since the lockout trying to dump salary and get under the cap.

9) The Caps need to win this year. With character players like Joel Ward, Troy Brouwer, Jeff Halpern and Roman Hamrlik now on the squad, there are no excuses for the team not to pull the pieces together. Anything short of a finals appearance means that both Boudreau and McPhee should be worried about their job security.

10) Chris Osgood, who is tenth all-time in wins with 401, is a hall-of-famer in my books. Stu Hackel, of Sports Illustrated, pointed out that he never had a regular season save percentage above .917. So what? When it counted, he was able to shut the door more often than not. In his last two playoff runs with the Red Wings, he posted phenomenal save percentages of .930 and .926. Oh, and he has three Stanley Cup rings.
