Doan wants big payday, Jets sign Enstrom, Alumni coaches, Rumours and more

Morning puck addicts!

With all the pomp and pageantry of the Olympic opening ceremonies last night (and they were quite spectacular) there is not a ton of NHL news this morning.

But little news does not mean no news!

Top on the list of interest for Habs addicts is the fact that Shane Doan apparently wants four years and $30 million if he leaves Phoenix.

Umm, how much?

If you're doing the math, that works out to $7.5 million per season. And this for a 35-year-old who is clearly on the downside of his career. Now Doan is still a useful player. Big and burly and still capable of potting you 20 goals.

But $7.5 million per over four years?

So my question to you this morning is simple. Would you still like to see Doan in a Habs uniform if it meant signing him for those kind of numbers?

Hockey News

-The Jets have extended Tobias Enstrom.

-The Sens bought out Bobby Butler.

-The NHL and NHLPA continue to negotiate a new CBA. But this time, with the league having given the final details of their proposal, the PA came back with a few issues. Namely ice conditions and training camp issues.

Nothing ground shaking but the good news is that the tone, at least publicly, from both sides seems to be rather positive. That is a marked change from the last time this happened.

Still, the PA has not yet tabled a counter-proposal of their own. When they do, the real games begin!

-If there is no lockout the Red Wings and Leafs are scheduled to play in the Winter Classic this year. As such, the two teams announced the coaches for their alumni games.

-The good folks at Habsworld.net have gotten together to discuss how to build a modern winning team.

-THN's Ken Campbell takes a look at whether or not the league would contract the Phoenix Coyotes.

Habs sign Lars Eller, Luongo, Leafs, Yotes, Lightning, Rumours and more

Morning puck fans!

If the UFA season kicked off with a bang it's been pretty quiet since. Then again, the big twin bombs were already deployed when Zach Parise and Ryan Suter both signed with the Wild.

On the Habs front, GM Marc Bergevin is surely still looking to add a top-6 winger and probably a hard-hitting stay-at-home defenseman. However those are scenarios that will likely only happen through trade, since there are few, it any legit options on the open market.

That said, Bergevin was able to check another item off his to-do list yesterday, signing RFA Lars Eller to a two year, $2.65 million deal.

The contract will pay him a digestible $1.15 million in year one and $1.5 in year two.

A fair deal for both sides and one that will allow Eller to truly come into his own. If he becomes the two-way center the Habs hope he will he stands to cash out nicely on his next contract.

In general NHL news, our own Louis Moustakas was talking the Parise/Suter deals, as well as a little Habs, with the gents from CKCU Red Zone. Have a listen and enjoy your weekend!

Habs combine, Canucks draft report, Gretzky, Kings celebrate, Rumours and more

It's pretty easy to tell that the hockey season is over, at least on the ice, because all of the talk has shifted to the upcoming draft.

There are still a bunch of post-mortem articles, as you'll see below, but the real story yesterday, at least for Habs fans, was the mini-combine.

Montreal had 43 prospects in town for physical testing, many of them like Alex Galchenyuk, Matt Dumba, Morgan Reilly, Griffin Reinhart and Mikhail Grigorenko were of the top-10 variety.

With the Habs picking third overall next Friday, they are certainly doing everything they can to properly evaluate the prospects.

In addition to the combine, there was a rumour floated that Marc Bergevin has offered P.K. Subban to the Oilers for the No.1 overall pick. That would give Montreal the first and third pick overall.

The Oilers said no. Or so the story goes.

But can you imagine that? Montreal picking first and third? Now this is, of course, just a rumour, but if these are the kind of moves that Bergevin is going to try and make, I think fans will end up being plenty happy.

Don't you?

Kings win, Habs Draft Report, Bruins sign two, Rumours and more

It's over!

Finally, June 11, 2012, and the Stanley Cup has finally been awarded. And what a deserving winner too.

The L.A. Kings completed their ascension to championship status, utterly dismantling the Devils 6-1 last night, to claim their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

This is a squad who, truth be told, didn't have much trouble downing any of their opponents, until Jersey came along. To that point, it's funny to think that their sole bit of adversity in these playoffs was being UP 3-2 in their series against Jersey.

Totally dominate.

I'm sure Philly GM, Paul Holmgren, who got rid of both Mike Richards and Jeff Carter last off-season, is feeling more than a twinge of pain this morning!

Kings/Devils GM 5, Gallant interview, Fisher retires, Rumours and more

Morning puck addicts!

Game 5 is upon us! Well, almost. In a few short hours the Los Angeles Kings will get another shot at glory. And by glory I mean the Stanley Cup.

With the series shifting back to New Jersey tonight and the Kings holding a 3-1 lead in the series, you get the feeling that perhaps the Devils aren't done yet.

Then again, the Kings have gone up 3-0 in all four series' they've played so far...and two of those series went five games. So clearly, they have been in this position before.

My mind tells me the Kings will wrap it up tonight but, for some reason, I feel that the Devils could take the game tonight.

Bah, so much for prognostication!

NHL Roundup, Bryzgalov sounds off, Rangers-Caps, rumours and more

Morning puck addicts!

So how have you been handling the two days away from playoff hockey? Have you been, I don't know, buying groceries, paying bills and, heaven forbid, going outside?

It's amazing how wrapped up we all get in the intensity of the playoffs. And, when there is a rare break, like there has been the last two nights, you kind of come back to reality. You remember that there is a life outside of playoff hockey.

I know that sounds like blasphemy to you. But it's a blast for me too!

Heh.

The big NHL news, aside from tonight's Caps-Rangers Game 7, is that the Flyers' goaltending woes just got a little more woeful. Ilya Bryzgalov, who refused to talk to North American media, was more than happy to sound off about Flyer fans, to a Russian newspaper. And it was ugly...

Eight more years with a $5.66 million cap hit? Ya, good luck with that contract.

NHL Trade Deadline: In the Canadiens' GM Chair, Part 2

Andrei Kostitsyn - Boston Bruins v Montreal Canadiens
As promised, I am back with the second and final edition of my Trade Deadline ideas. In my first part, I outlined my plan for the eight defensemen on the Montreal Canadiens' roster.

As fate would have it, big Hal Gill was the first to go in what I thought was a very good deal for the Habs.

It is not what I had hoped - Gill as part of a package for Chris Stewart - but realistically was a decent return.

Now that I have looked at the blueline and the dominoes have begun falling, the question is what to do with the forward unit.

Without further ado, here is the final half of what I would do if I were sitting in the GM chair.

The Foundation: Who Stays

From the current roster my quick list which includes Max Pacioretty, Erik Cole, Brian Gionta, David Desharnais, Ryan White, Lars Eller, and Louis Leblanc.

Together they represent two-thirds of the forward unit and, I would argue, the current and future core of the team. They possess a blend of size, skill, speed, and leadership that should not be tampered with.

Having said that, absolutely no forward on my team is an “untouchable”. Any player can be had if the right deal presents itself.

For instance, if a desperate Anaheim team were to pick up the phone and offer me Ryan Getzalf in a one-for-one deal, then Pacioretty would have to go.

Who is available?

Mathieu Darche

Mathieu Darche has, without a doubt, been playing the best hockey of his Montreal Canadiens career in the past couple of weeks. Nonetheless, he is an older, fringe NHL player who is getting more minutes than he should.

There is an obvious problem when a player like Darche is one of the most utilized, and number one RWer, alongside Tomas Plekanec and Rene Bourque.

Mr. Darche you have served your time as a Montreal Canadien and it is time to go.

It is so very difficult to put a value on a player, but there are certainly teams around who would like to add an experienced, depth player like Darche.

What I would do: Mathieu Darche will be dealt to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a conditional sixth round pick. If the Sharks win the cup it remains a sixth, if they do not then it becomes a seventh.

Andrei Kostitsyn

For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would defend this guy and plead that he be re-signed by the Habs. It is time for Mr. Kostitsyn to find employment elsewhere.

If the Habs are to become a consistent threat in the post season then they need to forget about inconsistent Kostitsyn-like players.

With so very few sellers at the 2012 deadline, Kostitsyn is going to be a fairly hot commodity. Teams like Los Angeles, Colorado, Detroit, Nashville, Pittsburgh or even Ottawa will be looking to add a rental player of his nature.

With limited players available this deadline, it is extremely safe to say that a return similar to Hal Gill - a mid-level prospect, a second round pick and a utility player - is not out of the question.

What I would do: Kostitysn becomes a member of the Florida Panthers. There is no better place to play in obscurity. In exchange Montreal will receive Keaton Ellerby and a secound round pick.

Travis Moen

I am a big fan of Travis Moen. When it was announced that he had signed a three year contract with the Habs, it was one of the highlights of my summer that year.

However, with his contract nearing its end there is talk of him departing.

I would like to see him remain a member of the team. Still, I am torn because Moen is one of the best rentals available and teams would almost certainly pay a premium for his services.

Travis could fetch a second round pick plus an added piece, making it hard to resist dealing him. Yet, few in the upcoming crop of UFA forwards can bring his character to the table.

If Moen remains in Montreal, I will not be upset. If he is dealt and fetches the above return, I will not be upset either.

His suitors are many. The likes of San Jose, Detroit and Vancouver pop up regularly in rumors. What does this tell us?

Elite clubs look for players like Moen before embarking on a playoff run.

What I would do: I believe that Travis will remain with the organization. If he is in fact dealt, then look for him to be headed to a name that nobody is talking about, the Phoenix Coyotes.

Phoenix needs depth on their bottom-six and the big winger would fit the bill nicely. Look for him to be dealt for Mikkel Boedker and a second round pick.

So that's it folks, that's how I'd retool this team.

What do you think of my moves? Would you trade other players like Bourque or Plekanec?

Habs/Devils, Leblanc recalled, Standings, Rumors and More

Louis Leblanc - New York Islanders v Montreal Canadiens
Morning puck fans.

The Eastern conference picture continued to get muddier last night.

With wins by Florida and Toronto, it is now the Canadiens' next opponent, the New Jersey Devils, who occupy the eighth and final seed.

The Devils are a full ten points ahead of 14th place Montreal and have a game in hand.

The Devils' nearest rival, the Washington Capitals, are but a point behind both them and the Southeast-leading Florida Panthers.

In the West, all but three points separate the eighth seeded Minnesota Wild from the 12th seeded Phoenix Coyotoes.

Say what you will about three-point games (beurk), there are exciting times ahead, no?

As for tonight's contest involving nos Glorieux, if nothing else it will once again be a chance to see what Louis Leblanc, who was called up yesterday, can do.

Habs/Pens, Leafs preview, Spacek speaks out, Rumours and more

Morning puck addicts!

The Montreal Canadiens lost again last night. That's not really anything too surprising given their play of late.

But what makes this win more painful was the 4-2 lead the Habs held to start the third period. And this despite being outshot 22-18 through two periods.

Ouch.

But the Pens turned it on in the third as the Habs now patented third period collapse reared it's ugly head.

I guess the coach really doesn't know what to do when he's putting Scott Gomez, who hasn't scored in almost a year, out there in the shootout. Montreal picks up one point in the shootout loss but, with 43, sits three points out of last in the East.

But at least they scored a powerplay goal yesterday!
