Pregame Preview: Canadiens at Panthers (Game #76)

habs_panthers_oct242011
Match Up:

The Canadiens (42-16-7) take their 4-game winning streak into Florida where they'll do battle against the Panthers (27-39-8) Saturday night. The game is set to start at 7:00 and airs on RDS and CBC.

This is the fourth an final game between these clubs, so far, Florida has managed to get the better of the Canadiens on 2 out of 3 tries. The Cats won a pair of games in December against the Habs, but Montreal managed a 2-1 victory the last time these teams met with the help of goals by David Desharnais and Brian Gionta.

What to Watch:

The line of Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Thomas Vanek combined for 3 goals and 3 assists in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Red Wings. Vanek led the way with three points, bringing him up to 9 points in 11 games since joining the Habs. PK Subban had a pair of assists on Thursday but was also on the ice for all 4 goals against. Through 75 games this year, PK has an even rating.

The Panthers have won just one of their last five games and were shut out twice during that span. With 35 points on the year, Scottie Upshall leads the Cats in scoring, he's 165th in the league in points. Rookie Nick Bjugstad has 14 goals and 33 points on the year. Roberto Luongo had been fairly solid in nets for the Panthers since joining the team at the trade deadline, but he was knocked out of action in Thursday's game and isn't expected to play on Saturday.

What's at Stake:

Even with the strength of 7 wins in the last 8 games the Canadiens haven't been able to get much separation over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Habs do hold a two-point lead over the Bolts, but Tampa has a pair of games in hand. The good news for the Habs is that they hold an 11-point lead over the 4 teams fighting for a Wild Card spot, which means with time running out on the season a first round match between the Canadiens and Lightning is all but set.

Who's Out:

Tomas Plekanec returned to Montreal after Thursday's game against the Wings for personal reasons and won't play on Saturday. The fourth line of Dale Weise (wrist), Travis Moen (head) and Brandon Prust (upper body) are all out, as is Josh Gorges (hand).

Florida is without Luongo (upper body), rookie Aleksander Barkov (knee) and Tomas Kopecky (concussion). St. Jerome native, Jonathan Huberdeau (lower body), is questionable for Saturday's game.

What Else:

The Habs will play game 2of their important 4-game road trip Saturday, then they return home to play 3 of their last 4 games in the Bell Centre. After facing the Panthers they'll visit Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning on Tuesday in what could be their most important match at this point in the season. The Lightning have 9 games remaining to Montreal's 7, and they play 6 in a row at home before ending their regular season with a trip to Washington to face the Capitals.

The Question Mark:

With Plekanec absent on Saturday, Lars Eller will likely be reunited with former linemates Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk. If that trio has a strong night should they be kept together after Plekanec returns?

Pregame Preview: Canadiens vs Canucks (Game #58)

montreal canadiens vs vancouver canucks nhl
Match Up:

The Canadiens (30-21-6) wrap up their pre-olympic homestand Thursday night when they host the Canucks (27-22-9) at the Bell Centre. The game is set to start at 7:30 and can be seen on RDS and TSN-Habs.

This is the second and final meeting between these two teams. The Canadiens earned a convincing 4-1 win in Vancouver at the beginning of the season, scoring twice on the power play and once shorthanded. Lars Eller was credited with the game winner when Dan Hamhuis got the puck tied up in Roberto Luongo's skates and it found it's way into the net. Raphael Diaz had a pair of assists in the match.

What to Watch:

With the recent trade between these teams it will be interesting to keep an eye on the play of Dale Weise and Raphael Diaz. Weise had 3 shots and played 12:45 Tuesday night in his Habs debut, his fourth highest ice time of the season. Diaz scored Vancouver's only goal in a 3-1 defeat against the Bruins on Tuesday.

The other match up to watch is the goalie duel between 2 of 3 three men fighting for the Team Canada starting goalie spot in Sochi, Carey Price and Roberto Luongo. Price currently has the edge on Luongo with a .923 save percentage to Luongo's .919, but the Canucks goalie has a 2.32 goals against average, slightly edging Price's 2.37. After a string of rough games, Price also has 2 shutouts and just 4 goals allowed in his last 4 games, while Luongo has given up 14 goals in his last 4.

What's at Stake:

The Habs have two games left to play before the Olympic break and with just a 4-point cushion over playoff bubble teams like the Red Wings and Flyers, every point they earn now will help set them up for the race to the end of the season. The Canadiens are also tied with the Maple Leafs for third place in the Atlantic division, but still hold a game in hand.

Who's Out:

The Canadiens are still missing Alex Galchenyuk (hand) until after the Olympics. Travis Moen (lower body) and Davis Drewiske (shoulder) are also questionable.

The Canucks are missing Kevin Bieksa (foot), Christopher Tanev (thumb), Andrew Alberts (head), Brad Richardson, Yannick Weber, and Mike Santorelli (shoulder). Dan Hamhuis and Chris Higgins are also questionable for Vancouver.

What Else:

In three seasons with the Canadiens, Raphael Diaz played 128 games and had 4 goals and 37 assists. At the time of the trade, Diaz hadn't scored a goal yet this season, but he potted one in his first game with the Canucks. Diaz has yet to pick up a point during the playoffs, he played 5 postseason games last year and finished the series against the Senators with a -4 rating. This season, the Swiss defenseman had yet to pick up a goal before scoring in his first game with the Canucks. Diaz will be taking part in his second Olympics, he'll join former Canadien and current Canuck, Yannick Weber, on the Swiss blueline.

The Question Mark:

What was your first impression of Dale Weise and are you expecting him to sign with the Habs this Summer?

Schneider returns to Vancouver

Last night the New Jersey Devils visited the Vancouver Canucks.

While most fans in Vancouver are accustomed to seeing one of Roberto Luongo or Cory Schneider in nets. Tuesday night, they were able to see both at the same time.

During the NHL entry draft last season, each team made a splash. The Devils dealt the 9th overall selection to Vancouver in exchange for Cory Schneider. Many speculated that Luongo would be the one shipped out. He was admittedly surprised when his name was not the one called to leave town.

Never the less, the NHL is still a business and managers must act accordingly in what they believe is in the best interest of their clubs.

For the Devils, they acquired the heir to the Hall of Fame bound Brodeur. And the Canucks...they acquired a top ten selection and drafted center Bo Horvat.

For many years fans of each franchise will wonder what could have been.

On the Vancouver side, will Luongo remain on top of his game and help the Canucks make the most of their seemingly closing window of opportunity to win a Stanley cup? Will Horvat become a top-6 forward for them worthy of trading away their "goaltender of the future"?

As for the Devils, they have their heir apparent now, but wil Schneider fill in the void that will be left when Brodeur decides to hang up the skates? Or should they have drafted a blue chip prospect to help bolster an aging roster, currently the oldest in the league?

Right now, it is impossible to gauge who won the deal.

For Montreal Canadiens fans, this scenario can be compared to the Eller/Halak trade with St-Louis. A forward prospect in exchange for a goalie who had just gotten his team to a conference final. Right now, Montreal is quite content with how Eller is playing, and St-Louis is also happy with Halak, despite his inability to remain healthy. It would appear as though it was a win-win using hindsight.

Although many deals in the NHL typically favor one side. It would be nice to see another deal work out in each clubs best interest. This particular deal does have the pieces to make that a possibility.

Habs/ Sens Game 3, Tinordi Embraces Playoffs And More...

Good Afternoon Addicts!

Craig Anderson will need to be in top form for the Senators to
move past the Habs in round one
The Montreal Canadiens resume their first round best of seven series tonight against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place.

Brian Gionta and Max Pacioretty traveled with the Canadiens to Ottawa but it's unsure as of yet if they will return to the lie-up tonight.

Whether or not the two top six forwards return, the Habs will need to play the way they did in Friday night's 3-1 win if they want to take the series lead. Craig Anderson will look to bounce back in goal for the Senators and if Montreal sticks to their game, he will be the main concern.

With more depth up front as well as on the blue line, Montreal will need Carey Price to outplay Anderson once again. Anderson finished the season with a .941 save%. That's a record for any goalie who has played at least 20 games in a season.

Anderson no doubt has the ability to steal a game or two in the series - hence the 48 saves in Ottawa's 4-2 game one win - and so the Habs will have to keep their offensive game going.

Habs Declaw Panthers, Kovy Returns, More...

Happy Hump Day HabsAddicts!!!

Our beloved Habs, fresh off a lacklustre performance on Saturday against the Leafs, brought their A game last night, beating the Florida Panthers 4-1. The Canadiens were led by Andrei Markov, who scored two power play goals, his first tallies in over two years.

Rookie centre Alex Galchenyuk, who centered the Habs' third line alongside Brandon Prust and Brendan Gallagher, scored his first career NHL goal. Gallagher tallied his first career point on the play.

Many were questioning the removal of Lars Eller from the lineup, but Galchenyuk's performance, which earned him the first star of the game, brought the capacity crowd to its feet and quickly silenced the naysayers. It was obvious through his performance that the Canadiens' 2012 third-round pick was right at home playing the centre position.

The team's character was also in evidence when Ryan White threw a couple of punches at the Panthers' Thomas Fleischman after he hit Josh Gorges from behind. While the altercation earned White an instigator penalty and ejection, no one criticized that fourth liners for coming to the defence of one of his teammates.

Kevin Dineen, the head coach of the Panthers, started Scott Clemmenson in goal versus the Canadiens. Coming into the game, Clemmenson boast a flawless 6-0 career record versus "Les Glorieux."

The Canadiens are next in action on Thursday night, as they travel to Washington to take on Alex Ovechkin and the still winless Capitals.

Habs and Hockey News and Notes:

- Tune in to the podcast of the post-game show on MontrealHockeyTalk.com, as host Corey Collard, Matt Casavant, Jay Ferrar and our own Kamal Panesar analyze the Canadiens' victory, and it possible implications in the P.K. Subban negociations.

- Dave Stubbs visits with former Hab and current Florida Panthers' winger Alex Kovalev to discuss his return to Montreal.

- With Vancouver GM Mike Gillis' comments yesterday about a possible deal being close for trading goaltender Roberto Luongo, rumbling out of Toronto suggest that the "additional player" in the deal may be either Joffrey Lupul, who just signed a five-year extension with the Leafs, or Phil Kessel, who has lost favour with head coach Randy Carlyle.

- While we already knew sports merchandise sales were down during the NHL lockout, SportsPosterWarehouse.com posted some interesting stats in regards to how overall poster sales were affected. Hopefully, business is about to pick up.

Habs Drop Opener To Leafs, Gomez A Shark?, Schneider/Luongo Controversy And More...

Good Morning Addicts!

Carey Price was one of the few bright spots in last night's loss
Well hockey is back but it seem the Habs didn't get the memo. In losing 2-1 in their home opener against the Maple Leafs it seemed quite evident that it will take some time to adapt to Therrien's system.

There was a lot of negativity online following the game but it's important for everyone to remember that it was just one game. Understandably each game carries a ton of importance due to the shortened season but if it makes anybody feel better the Red Wings got trounced, the Blue Jackets won and the defending champion Kings looked nothing like they did when they lost only four games while on their way to winning the cup.

The Canadiens had a handful of players play overseas during the lockout but as ESPN's Pierre LeBrun points out, it was the Toronto Marlies graduates who appeared more fresh while leading their team to their first two points.

For those optimists out there, there were a few positives you could pick out of las night's loss if you tried. For one, it didn't seem too obvious that goaltender Carey Price hasn't played since last year. Price played well enough to give his team a chance to win had they provided any offense at all.

Andrei Markov finished the game healthy. Not only that but he lead the team in minutes with 24:08 minutes. Not one player on the Habs finished with a faceoff percentage lower than 50%. That is an area that has hurt the Habs since Yannick Perreault left the team and will play a huge part in their success or lack thereof.

The Canadiens play next on Tuesday when they host Alex Kovalev and the Florida Panthers. Kovalev enjoyed his debut with the Panthers scoring his first goal of the season and adding two assists.

Habs And Hockey News

- It seems Scott Gomez may be a Shark sooner rather than later. Gomez is set to meet with the Sharks this week. I'm not going to lie, I wish him the best!

- Keep your eyes on Vancouver if you enjoy a good goalie controversy. In his first game as the Canuck's starter, Corey Schneider lasted only 26:37 before being replaced by Roberto Luongo.

- Richard Garneau who hosted La Soiree du Hockey as well as covered the Olympics for Radio Canada passed away this morning at the age of 82.

No Excuses For Bourque, Cole Happy To Be Back, More...

Good Morning HabsAddicts!!!

Canadiens' forward Rene Bourque, who was acquired last season in a trade with the Calgary Flames for Michael Cammalleri, has been the ire of many since his arrival in Montreal. Coming with a reputation of being short in the heart department, he did nothing to dissuade fans with his play last season.

Bourque, who is coming off abdominal surgery over the summer, skated with some of his Habs' teammates in Brossard on Wednesday, and, according to Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette, is ready to convince fans that there is more to him than those rumours would suggest.

Eric Cole, who during the NHL Lockout was quite outspoken about the labour dispute, spoke to Dave Stubbs of the Gazette, and explained how he had mixed emotions when he found out a deal was struck. From relief that it was over, to disgust that it took so long to figure out, Cole is definitely excited to hit the ice.

Habs and Hockey News and Notes:

- Most of the hockey world was stunned when Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment announced that Maple Leafs' General Manager Brian Burke was relieved of his duties and replaced by his second in command, former Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis. Speculation is that MLSE President Tom Anselmi and the new members of the BCE/Rogers ownership group did not believe Burke and his arrogant demeanour were how they wanted to be represented. With Nonis taking over at the helm, it's expected that the team will continue with the same philosophy, as far as hockey operations are concerned.

Some have suggested that the rift between Burke and MLSE is rooted around the possible acquisition of Vancouver Canucks' goaltender Roberto Luongo. It's believed that MLSE Thinks that the recent moves made by Alex Anthopoulos and the Toronto Blue Jays have taken the attention away from the Leafs, when they should be front and Center in the Toronto sports scene, and trading for Luongo would change that.

- Yesterday, the NHL Board of Governors unanimously ratified the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Katie Strang of ESPN.com explains that all that is required, for the lockout to officially be over, is for the players to vote for ratification. The NHLPA's 700+ membership is expected to vote electronically, and expected to conclude late Friday or Saturday.

- Speaking of Luongo, Enrico Ciccone, an analyst for TVA Sports, tweeted that the Philadelphia Flyers may be interested in getting Luongo. With their ill-advised long term signing of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, could the Flyers really afford to get Bobby Lou?

Habs add John Madden, Luongo to Panthers, Free Agency and More

John Madden - Florida Panthers v New Jersey Devils - Game Six
Good AM Habs fans!

Yesterday it was announced that former NHL centre John Madden will join the Montreal Canadiens' amateur recruitment group. More specifically, he will be responsible for scouting free agents in the US collegiate ranks.

This is what appears to be another solid move by Marc Bergevin.

And yet, I have some reservations. Reservations not about Madden individually, but rather about the amount of former players hired by the General Manager.

After all, being a former player hardly guarantees competency in management or scouting related positions. In this case, I fear that their might be too many individuals who share the same backgrounds and perspectives.

A homogeneity which can stifle creative and innovative decision making. After all, studies show that diverse work groups make better decisions.

What do you think? Are there too many former players on Bergevin's management team?

Habs and Hockey news

- Rory Boylen profiles the intense, and at times insane, reaction of fans in regards to the pending lockout and hockey in general.

- Roberto Luongo rather bluntly states his preference for returning to the Florida Panthers.

- Pierre LeBrun reports that the NHL would like to move the opening of free agency to July 10th.

- Did you know that the French Women's National Team toured in Montreal last week? Neither did I.

- Finally, a bit of good news. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, the Russian team involved in an unfortunate plane crash last year, has made its return to the KHL.

Weber in shock, Canucks signings, Rumours, Luongo to Blackhawks? and more

Morning puck addicts!

Like today's news, I'll be brief this morn as I'm on my way out the door. There is not a lot going on this morning in the world of hockey.

Except, of course, more discussions about Roberto Luongo and where the Canucks will trade him to.

The only other news of note is the discussions surrounding Nashville all-star defenseman, Shea Weber. The Preds are currently negotiating with him but, given his shock at seeing fellow defender, Ryan Suter, leave town via free-agency, there is no guarantee he too won't ask to leave.

Interesting times indeed. Well, unless you're a Preds fan. In that case, the times are decidedly precarious!

Habs sign Lars Eller, Luongo, Leafs, Yotes, Lightning, Rumours and more

Morning puck fans!

If the UFA season kicked off with a bang it's been pretty quiet since. Then again, the big twin bombs were already deployed when Zach Parise and Ryan Suter both signed with the Wild.

On the Habs front, GM Marc Bergevin is surely still looking to add a top-6 winger and probably a hard-hitting stay-at-home defenseman. However those are scenarios that will likely only happen through trade, since there are few, it any legit options on the open market.

That said, Bergevin was able to check another item off his to-do list yesterday, signing RFA Lars Eller to a two year, $2.65 million deal.

The contract will pay him a digestible $1.15 million in year one and $1.5 in year two.

A fair deal for both sides and one that will allow Eller to truly come into his own. If he becomes the two-way center the Habs hope he will he stands to cash out nicely on his next contract.

In general NHL news, our own Louis Moustakas was talking the Parise/Suter deals, as well as a little Habs, with the gents from CKCU Red Zone. Have a listen and enjoy your weekend!

All-Star Stanley Cup Goaltending No Longer Necessary/New Sunday Shinny Podcast

by Kamal Panesar

Good morning hockey addicts!

I've got another brief break in baby planning/preparation so I thought I'd poke my head in to offer a few thoughts on the playoffs.

The first thing that I notice, when looking at the two conference finals that are going on, is an incredible lack of proven goaltending.

Now before you jump down my throat on that one, allow me to explain.

I'm Not Buying It

Excluding the recent insertion of Mike Smith into the Tampa Bay cage—he is also unproven—the four netminders left are Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Dwayne Roloson and Antti Niemi.

I'm sure the first thing people will say to me is that Luongo has an Olympic Gold Medal, Antti Niemi has a Stanley Cup ring and Tim Thomas won the Vezina a few seasons ago.

As for Roloson, he has had a respectable, if undecorated, career.

So let's start with the Luongo argument.

Yes, he has an Olympic Gold and was the starter for the gold medal game, but Luongo got the job by default when Martin Brodeur faltered early. Moreover, Luongo didn't play tremendous hockey for Team Canada and the team won despite his average performance.

So far in the playoffs, Luongo has a middling .917 save percentage and a pedestrian 2.37 GAA. That the Canucks are one win away from the Stanley Cup final—they are also my pick to win the Cup—is due more to the tremendous skill and depth in front of him.

Antti Niemi is kind of in the same boat as Luongo, having won the cup with Chicago last year in the worst demonstration of Stanley Cup Final goaltending in NHL history. Philly too had horrible goaltending and both teams won the games they did despite their netminders.

So I don't give Niemi much clout in that argument. Plus, as well as he played during the season for San Jose, he is sitting on a .895 save percentage and a 3.33 GAA through 17 playoff games.

Ouch!

Tim Thomas, with a .931 save percentage and a 2.27 GAA, is a bit of a different story, having won the Vezina trophy in 2009 and being in line to win it again this season. That being said, I just don't buy it.

I watch this guy play and he lets in far too many bad goals for my comfort.

In addition, he came out of nowhere to win the 2009 Vezina and is suddenly supposed to be a goaltending phenom in his thirties? This with no previous record of greatness and with no prior pedigree?

That dog won't hunt.

That being said, every time I think he and the Bruins will get bounced from the playoffs Thomas comes up with a game saving performance. As such, in my books, he is the closest thing to being an established goaltender out of the remaining four.

Dwayne Roloson, who was pulled in his last start and sat as the backup to Mike Smith last night against Boston, is an aged journeyman goaltender. At 41 years of age, he played an excellent season to get the Bolts into the playoffs and all the way to the conference finals.

Yet when the chips were down, Roloson failed and his team is on the brink of elimination as such. Hardly Conn Smythe candidate performances.

The game has changed

So if none of the four remaining teams have exceptional goaltending, then why are they in the conference finals over other teams?

It is because the game has changed.

Philadelphia and Chicago demonstrated in last year's playoffs, that you no longer need to have lights-out goaltending to contend for or win the Stanley Cup. No longer are the virtuoso perfromances of Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur needed to win a championship. Nowadays, depth, an ability to remain relatively healthy and a little luck are usually all that is needed.

If you look at some of the players that are helping their teams win and scoring goals at opportune moments, it is not usually the top-line players. Players like Maxim Lapierre, Chris Higgins, Raffi Torres, Sean Bergenheim, Steve Downie, Dominic Moore, Devin Stoguchi, Logan Couture, Brad Marchard, Patrice Bergeron, Mark Recchi, Logan and other, are the ones that help a team contend for the Cup.

Oh sure, you still need top line scoring but without four lines of depth, it is impossible to win. In the past, you were perhaps able to win or make it to the final on the back of spectacular goaltending. While all-star goaltending can still take you all the way, you generally need much more than just that to win in today's NHL.

2011 NHL Playoffs Musings: Top-10 Pre-Playoff Questions

by Kamal Panesar

With the start of the 2011 NHL playoffs only a few hours away, the anticipation and excitement has reached fever pitch!

The playoffs is always a great time of year as the play on the ice is, generally speaking, superb and the enjoyment off of it is equally spectacular. In addition, the playoffs tend to spin off a lot of storylines as the teams wage war in the trenches.

So before the puck drops tonight, I thought I'd steal out of Eric Engels' book and throw out my top-10 pre-playoff question.

Read them, love them and post your answers in the comment section!

So here we go, in no particular order:

1 - Can the Vancouver Canucks get past their playoff nemeses, Chicago Blackhawks, in the first round?

2 - Can Roberto Luongo silence his critics and lead the Canucks to the promised land?

3- Do the Montreal Canadiens have another miracle run in them or will they be a "one-and-done" team this year?

4 - Can Joe Thornton and the San Jose Sharks finally make a legitimate playoff run, or are they destined to be a regular season success that fizzles in the post-season?

5 - Will Pekka Rinne be this year's Jaroslav Halak and, if so, how far will he lead the Nashville predators?

6 - Are the Washington Capitals really a changed team and can their new style of play lead them to a championship this year?

7 - Can and will Guy Boucher's turnaround of the Tampa Bay Lightning continue in the post-season, or will the cracks start to show?

8 - Is the loss of Chris Pronger too much for the Philadelphia Flyers to overcome?

9 - Can the Chicago Blackhawks, minus Dustin Byfulgien, Andrew Ladd and others, repeat after backing into the playoffs?

10 - Can Pittsburgh get it done without Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby?

Canadiens Game Day: Habs Try To End Skid Against Red Hot Canucks

by Kamal Panesar

Two days after getting their heads handed to them against the Calgary Flames in the Heritage Classic, the Habs are in Vancouver to take on the league-leading Canucks tonight.

With the Canadiens on a three-game losing streak and the trade deadline only six days away, the burning question on Habs addicts' minds today is: do I really have to stay up until 1:00 AM Eastern just to watch Montreal lose?

Admit it, that's what's in the back of your mind, isn't it?

Tonight's game is the third and final match on this so far miserable road trip for the Habs, and will once again feature a really hot team versus a really cold team.

Standings

The Canadiens are 4-4-2 over their last 10 games and are on their worst stretch since going 5-8-1 through the month of December. Montreal is 1-4-2 over their last seven games and clearly trending in the wrong direction.

Despite their horrific record of late, the Canadiens somehow remain in sixth place overall in the East with 69 points, as no one behind them in the standings seems to be able to string together victories.

Montreal is three points up on the New York Rangers for seventh, five points up on the Hurricanes for eighth and a full nine points up on the ninth place Sabres.

In fact, aside from the Bruins and Capitals who each have two straight wins, no team in the top-12 of the Eastern conference is on anything more than a one-game streak, helping the Habs to stay in contention.

The playoff picture is much clearer and brighter for the Canucks who with a 38-13-9 record, 85 points in the standings and a 7-3-0 record over their last ten games are the top team in the NHL.

Vancouver holds a five-point lead over the second place (in the West) Red Wings and a whopping 15-point lead over the second place (in the Northwest division) Calgary Flames.

Goaltending

Carey Price, who is 0-for-2 attempts in Vancouver, will be trying to get his first career win against his home province Canucks. After being benched his first time in Vancouver in favour of Jaroslav Halak and getting shelled 7-1 in his second visit, Price will have fire in his belly and be aching to pull out a victory with friends and family in attendance.

The story is almost equally interesting in the other net with Montreal native, Roberto Luongo, getting his 46th start of the season. Luongo is 11-0-3 with a sparkling 1.81 goals-against average in his last 14 home starts to go with the Canucks incredible 21-4-5 home record this season.

To say that the Habs—who have been outscored 8-1 over two games so far on this road trip—have their work cut out for them would be a massive understatement.

Special Teams and Scoring

This is where it gets really ugly for the Canadiens, or at least for their chances of winning tonight.

The Canucks have the No.1 goals-for in the league at 3.3 per game, the No.1 goals-against at 2.3 per game, the No.1 power play at 25.1 percent and the No.4 penalty kill at 85.5 percent.

Talk about a juggernaut!

Montreal, on the other hand, is 25th overall with 2.5 goals-for per game, ninth with 2.5 goals-against per game, ninth with an 18.7 percent power play and seventh with an 84.2 percent PK.

Needless to say, Montreal will be facing a huge defensive challenge and a will need a serious trend reversal from their anemic offense to score on the hermetic Vancouver D.

They would also do well to stay out of the penalty box.

Roster Changes

Despite getting Hal Gill and Michael Cammalleri back in the lineup last game, the Canadiens are still dealing with the losses of Andrei Markov, Josh Gorges, Mathieu Darche and Jaroslav Spacek.

With the team in a tailspin and the offense sputtering, Jacques Martin has taken out his bingo machine and is seemingly picking numbers at random to form his lines. If we go by the lines at yesterday's practice, the Canadiens lineup should look something like this:

Jeff Halpern - Tomas Plekanec - Michael Cammalleri
Max Pacioretty - Scott Gomez - Brian Gionta
Benoit Pouliot - David Desharnais - Ryan White
Travis Moen - Lars Eller - Andrei Kostitsyn

Halpern on the top line at wing, rather than center, is a bit of a head-scratcher considering he has been the Habs' best faceoff man this season. That being said, reuniting Pouliot, Desharnais and White is a solid move as they have been the Habs most consistent line over the last five games or so.

Despite their tremendous success this season, the Canucks have a long litany of injuries including six players on the injury reserve—Andrew Alberts, Keith Ballard, Alexander Edler, Alexandre Bolduc, Rick Rypien and Lee Sweatt.

Defenseman Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard are both skating and could return to the lineup as soon as tonight.

Intangibles

The Canadiens have not won in Vancouver since November 2000 and Carey Price has never won a game in his home province. Both the team and the player will be trying to reverse those trends tonight.

Game time is 10:00 PM Eastern.

New Sunday Shinny

With Nick home sick with strep throat, Gary Whittaker and Kamal Panesar welcome Kevin Mio, online editor of the Montreal Gazette to the Shinny.

Topics include:
-we play the role of GM of the Canadiens, and define the team needs going into the trade deadline
-we evaluate the current level of value that the Canadiens have to offer
-we look ahead to the Heritage Classic game in Calgary
