Pregame Preview: Canadiens at Sharks (Game #66)

montreal canadiens vs san jose sharks
Match Up:

The Canadiens (35-23-7) wrap up their West Coast road trip Saturday night against the Sharks (40-17-7) in San Jose. The game starts at 10:00 pm and airs on RDS and CBC.

This is the second and final meeting between the Habs and Sharks. San Jose earned a 2-0 shutout win at the Bell Centre in October. Logan Couture scored both goals for the Sharks and Patrick Marleau picked up a pair of assists. Anti Niemi made 22 saves, while Carey Price made 35 in the losing effort.

What to Watch:

Thomas Vanek has played one game as a Hab and has yet to earn his first point with the team. He joined the Canadiens Thursday after a long night of travel and with no scheduled practice, the first chance he got to skate with his new teammates was during the game against the Coyotes. Vanek lined up with Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta and is expected to stay with those linemates on Saturday.

Joe Pavelski is having a career year in his eighth season as a Shark. Pavelski has already reached a new career high in goals with 32 on the season, and after adding 3 assist against the Penguins Thursday, he's just 4 points shy of his career high, 66. Joe Thornton meanwhile is second in the league in assists with 52. Jumbo Joe has a goal and 4 assists in 5 games since the Olympic break ended.

What's at Stake:

The Canadiens are holding down third spot in the East but they've also played more games than any team in the Conference besides the Islanders. The Leafs and Lightning are hot on the Habs' heels while the Flyers, Red Wings and Rangers aren't very far behind either.

Who's Out:

The Canadiens will be in tough against one of the league's best offenses, they're still missing Carey Price (lower body) and Josh Gorges (hand). Brandon Prust (upper body) and Michael Bournival (concussion) are also out.

The Sharks are without star rookie Tomas Hertl (knee), while Brad Stuart (upper body) has been out since the Olympics and may also miss Saturday's game.

What Else:
With 16 starts and 19 games played this season, Peter Budaj has seen the most action this year since he split starting goalie duties with Craig Anderson in Colorado during the 2010-11 season. While his won/loss ratio isn't as impressive as the 8-1-1 record he posted last season, Budaj has still maintained a respectable .911 save percentage and 2.35 GAA.
The Question Mark:
After Saturday's game the Canadiens will have finished up their toughest stretch stretch of the season and return home with just 16 games left to play. What we want to know from you is: in what place will the Habs will finish the season?

Andrei Markov Profile, Backup Plans, Labor Uncertainty and More

Andrei Markov - Tampa Bay Lightning v Montreal Canadiens
Good AM!

Our Sean Lloyd returns with his profile series this week, looking at the oft injured Andrei Markov.

In his excellent piece, he asks about who should be paired with Markov.

But I have another query: do you actually believe he will remain relatively healthy for a change?

Habs and Hockey News

- The HabsWorld crew weighs in on Max Pacioretty's recent extension.

- Given the increasing unease around CBA negotiations, many players are slowly starting to make contingency plans should the NHL season not start on time. As mentioned yesterday, there are conflicting reports about Joe Thornton and Rick Nash returning to HC Davos. Meanwhile, RDS reports on the intentions of a few of the Quebecois currently in the league. Personally, I would go play in France. Why? Because I think French girls are cute. And don't think I'm just being silly. Thornton met his wife in Davos.

- The current labor uncertainty is already having tangible impacts. The Traverse City prospect tournament has been cancelled and progress regarding the Phoenix Coyotes has slowed.

- The Hockey News continues its predictions, revealing numbers seven and eight in each conference.

Luca Ciampini invited to Habs Camp, Wayne Simmonds Extension, Wide Gap and More

Donald Fehr - Tampa Bay Rays v Philadelphia Phillies
Good AM Hockey fans!

I was reading about the NHLPA's latest CBA proposal and one element really struck me: capping front office and coaching spending.

Not the worst idea in the world. After all, if the owners are to cry foul, then everyone should share in the burden, not just the players.

What about you? Do you like the idea?

Habs and Hockey News

- The Montreal Canadiens have invited Halifax Moosehead forward Luca Ciampini to training camp next month.

- The Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly signed Wayne Simmonds to a six-year extension.

- Rick Nash and Joe Thornton will reportedly play for HC Davos if the NHL season does not begin on time. Both played there ins 2004-2005, helping the Swiss squad to both a league and Spengler Cup championship.

- Gary Bettman feels a wide gap remains between the NHL's and the NHLPA's position. Stu Hackel at Sports Illustrated offers an excellent dissection of the situation. Meanwhile, at The Hockey News, Adam Proteau looks at Donald Fehr's attempt to frame these negotiations as an owner versus owner battle.

- THN continues its projections, working their way to the number nine spot in each conference.

2011 NHL Playoffs Musings: Top-10 Pre-Playoff Questions

by Kamal Panesar

With the start of the 2011 NHL playoffs only a few hours away, the anticipation and excitement has reached fever pitch!

The playoffs is always a great time of year as the play on the ice is, generally speaking, superb and the enjoyment off of it is equally spectacular. In addition, the playoffs tend to spin off a lot of storylines as the teams wage war in the trenches.

So before the puck drops tonight, I thought I'd steal out of Eric Engels' book and throw out my top-10 pre-playoff question.

Read them, love them and post your answers in the comment section!

So here we go, in no particular order:

1 - Can the Vancouver Canucks get past their playoff nemeses, Chicago Blackhawks, in the first round?

2 - Can Roberto Luongo silence his critics and lead the Canucks to the promised land?

3- Do the Montreal Canadiens have another miracle run in them or will they be a "one-and-done" team this year?

4 - Can Joe Thornton and the San Jose Sharks finally make a legitimate playoff run, or are they destined to be a regular season success that fizzles in the post-season?

5 - Will Pekka Rinne be this year's Jaroslav Halak and, if so, how far will he lead the Nashville predators?

6 - Are the Washington Capitals really a changed team and can their new style of play lead them to a championship this year?

7 - Can and will Guy Boucher's turnaround of the Tampa Bay Lightning continue in the post-season, or will the cracks start to show?

8 - Is the loss of Chris Pronger too much for the Philadelphia Flyers to overcome?

9 - Can the Chicago Blackhawks, minus Dustin Byfulgien, Andrew Ladd and others, repeat after backing into the playoffs?

10 - Can Pittsburgh get it done without Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby?
