Habs Roundup: Cammalleri, Eller, Cunneyworth, NHL Realignment

Greetings puck addicts! Sorry I've been under the radar for a while now but I'm dealing with illness on the homefront.

Not me personally and nothing of the serious nature, but both my wife and 6-month-old son have been sick as dogs with whatever flu is going around, the last few weeks. As such, I've been running my own triage clinic at home and have been mostly unable to write.

But that doesn't mean that the league has stood still for me!

Over the last week or so, there have been a bunch of interested developments on the Habs and NHL (in general) front.

Montreal had their first convincing win of the year, under new coach Randy Cunneyworth, this past week. It was a 7-3 drubbing of the Winnepeg Jets signed by a foul goal, five point night from Lars Eller.

Has there been a player who is more positively affected by the firing of Jacques Martin than Lars Eller?

This kid is playing with gusto and is not being punished for mistake, a common theme for youngsters in the Martin era. As a result, his confidence is sky high and it shows on the ice.

We've seen flashes of the tremendous skillset that Eller has since he was acquired, but with his performance over the Jets, Eller clearly had his coming out party.

While fans were naturally excited by the blowout win and Eller's performance, I think people need to temper that excitement with a little realism.

The Habs will not make the playoffs this year, as my friend, TSN 990's Matthew Ross points out.

There is always a mathematical chance but let's be honest here, Montreal is not about to win twice as many games as they lose till the end of the season.

Still, the Eller performance is/will arguably be the high point of the year for Habs fans.

A system takes time

The outcry over Cunneyworth's appointment as (unilingual) Habs head coach has died down a little. This even those a political group is organizing a protest in front of the Bell Centre tonight.

But what hasn't been discussed a lot is that we are slowly starting to see some changes on the ice.

You have to remember that Cunneyworth took over in the morning and coached his first game that evening. Couple that with a compacted schedule and a six-game road trip, and he didn't really get many practices in which to implement his system.

What we saw over the Habs extended losing streak was a team trying to adapt to a new style of play without having practiced it. We also saw a bunch of players who were programmed to think a certain way (defensively) under Martin, struggling to embrace a new, more open style.

Now, I don't think the Habs will win 7-3 every night, but the seven-goal outburst showcases the more offensive system that Cunneyworth is putting in place. And if Eller is the player who has benefited the most by playing under a new coach, Michael Cammalleri is a close second.

After going through a stretch of 10 games without a goal, the Habs highest paid sniper now has three goals, four points and a plus-2 rating in the last four games. Moreover, Cammalleri scored his first powerplay goal of the year against the Lightning last week.

Again, I don't think this suddenly makes the Habs a playoff team, but it's nice to see some positive signs for a change.

Realign this!

If you haven't heard by now, the NHLPA rejected the league's proposed division and playoff realignment for next season.

Here's the NHL's statement on the rejection followed by a statement released by the player's association.

To summarize, the league feels the PA has unjustly and unfoundedly rejected the proposal. The PA, on the other hand, feels that they asked the league for more info and were stonewalled.

And so it starts.

This is the first real confrontation/negotiation between Gary Bettman and PA head, Donald Fehr in what is surely a prelude to CBA discussions. The two are supposed to sit down at the All Star game this month, to start talks on renewing the expiring CBA—it expires as the end of this season.

If this first volley is any indication of the way things are going to play out, I think fans can expect to miss at least part of next season due to a lockout.

This move, to me, feels like the PA gathering a bargaining chip. The realignment is sure to come up again in CBA talks and the PA can/likely will use it as leverage.

The problem is that Bettman is known to be as stubborn as a bull and doesn't like being manipulated. As such, he is likely to revert to the petulant style he routinely displays when challenged.

That being said, I truly feel that the owners will have no choice but to bend more than the PA this time around. After the Olympics in 2010 and the recent cup wins by the Pens, Blackhawks and Bruins, the NHL is at an all time high, popularity-wise, in the U.S.

As such, the owners and the league simply cannot risk losing the tenuous momentum they currently have.

Either way, I can see things getting pretty spicy over the next six months.

NHLPA Press Release - PA Comments Rejection of NHL Realignment

STATEMENT FROM NHLPA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DON FEHR REGARDING PROPOSED NHL REALIGNMENT

Toronto (January 6, 2012) -- National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) Executive Director Don Fehr issued the following statement this evening regarding the League’s realignment proposal:

“On the evening of December 5, 2011, the NHL informed the NHLPA that they proposed to put in place a four-conference format beginning with the 2012-13 season. As realignment affects Players’ terms and conditions of employment, the CBA requires the League to obtain the NHLPA’s consent before implementation. Over the last month, we have had several discussions with the League and extensive dialogue with Players, most recently on an Executive Board conference call on January 1. Two substantial Player concerns emerged: (1) whether the new structure would result in increased and more onerous travel; and (2) the disparity in chances of making the playoffs between the smaller and larger divisions.

In order to evaluate the effect on travel of the proposed new structure, we requested a draft or sample 2012-13 schedule, showing travel per team. We were advised it was not possible for the League to do that. We also suggested reaching an agreement on scheduling conditions to somewhat alleviate Player travel concerns (e.g., the scheduling of more back-to-back games, more difficult and lengthier road trips, number of border crossings, etc.), but the League did not want to enter into such a dialogue. The travel estimation data we received from the League indicates that many of the current Pacific and Central teams, that have demanding travel schedules under the current format, could see their travel become even more difficult. On the playoff qualification matter, we suggested discussing ways to eliminate the inherent differences in the proposed realignment, but the League was not willing to do so.

The League set a deadline of January 6, 2012 for the NHLPA to provide its consent to the NHL’s proposal. Players’ questions about travel and concerns about the playoff format have not been sufficiently addressed; as such, we are not able to provide our consent to the proposal at this time. We continue to be ready and willing to have further discussions should the League be willing to do so.”

NHL Press Release - NHLPA Rejects Proposed Realignment

Fresh on the heels of Bryan Willey and Rosalyn Roy's He Said/She Said article on NHL realignment, the NHL has announced that the PA has rejected the proposed realignment.

Here's the presser:

NHL REALIGNMENT DELAYED; NHLPA DENIES CONSENT

NEW YORK (January 6, 2012) - The National Hockey League announced today that it will not move forward with implementation of the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format recently approved by the NHL Board of Governors for the 2012-13 NHL season because the NHLPA has refused to provide its consent.

“It is unfortunate that the NHLPA has unreasonably refused to approve a Plan that an overwhelming majority of our Clubs voted to support, and that has received such widespread support from our fans and other members of the hockey community, including Players,” said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. “We have now spent the better part of four weeks attempting to satisfy the NHLPA’s purported concerns with the Plan with no success.

Because we have already been forced to delay, and as a result are already late in beginning the process of preparing next season’s schedule, we have no choice but to abandon our intention to implement the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format for next season.”

“We believe the Union acted unreasonably in violation of the League’s rights. We intend to evaluate all of our available legal options and to pursue adequate remedies, as appropriate.”

As a result of the League’s decision today, the NHL will maintain its current alignment and Playoff Format for the 2012-13 season.

Kamal's Note: So does this seem like posturing by the NHLPA to anyone else? And by posturing I mean fodder for the upcoming CBA negotiations.

The PA is clearly maneuvering themselves to have as much leverage as possible when they sit down to hammer out the new CBA this summer. Just like Gary Bettman did to the KHL by suggesting NHL players may not go to Sochi in 2014, the PA is holding this card.

It's something they will likely use as a bargaining chip. On a slightly more worrisome level, this perhaps shows the face of PA head, Donald Fehr.

The PA is sure to release their own statement soon enough but, until then, hold on to your hats because the CBA negotiations could be about to get heated!

He Said / She Said: The Canadiens' New Conference

Tomas Kaberle - Montreal Canadiens v Florida Panthers
Looking ahead at 2012, many questions surround the Montreal Canadiens.

Will Andrei Markov return? What will happen to Scott Gomez and his egregious contract? What fate will be reserved for Randy Cunneyworth and Pierre Gauthier? How will the new CBA impact the team?

Amidst this sea of unknowns, there is at least one item that remains certain: Montreal will play in a new conference next season, joining Buffalo, Toronto, Boston, Ottawa, Florida and Tampa Bay.

Likewise, around the league three others conferences of either seven or eight teams will be formed and the top four in each will qualify for the post-season. Once a conference champion is crowned, the idea is that the remaining four teams will face off against each other, creating the potential for some unusual semi-final matchups.

The scheduling matrix will be changed accordingly and every team will, at a minimum, play a home-and-away series against each other.

Taking a break from contemplating the many uncertainties facing the club, our resident writers, Bryan Willey and Rosalyn Roy, discuss how they feel about this re-alignment and how it might affect the Habs.

Bryan Willey: I absolutely hate it. How does it make sense to have Montreal in the same division as the Florida teams?

I understand the league wants to group the major metropolitan areas, but the Canadiens have to fly across the Eastern seaboard just to get to Florida. C'est ridicule.

Only having seven squads in the conference makes it slightly easier playoff wise, but the amount of travel will balance that. And don't even get me started on the general poor results the Canadiens muster on their trips to the Sunshine State.

Rosalyn Roy: My first thought when I read of the new four conference format was pretty simple and telling: Patrick, Adams, Smythe and Norris. I've never seen the need for six divisions to begin with.

I get how the restructure does not bode particularly well for Hurricanes or the Islanders, but it is the responsibility of every NHL team to improve to the point where it can legitimately contend.

Making weaker divisions for the chronic bubble or wild card teams to get a shot at the Stanley Cup does not benefit the sport, which is why the league currently has 30 teams, some of which are in markets that will never, ever be self-sustaining.

As for the Habs, not much has changed. They're still going to contend with Boston and Toronto a lot of the time, though they caught a break avoiding the likes of Philadelphia and getting the two Florida teams, who actually got the short end of that deal.

That said, I'm not sold on the playoffs format with the top four in each division contending against each other, with a reset once the division champs are crowned and they move to the semi-finals.

I'll have to reserve some enthusiasm until I see it actually play out. But a Toronto or Boston series for the conference crown is appealing.

Bryan Willey: Again, I don't like it. More travel, more games against the West, and a division featuring two teams with no relevance.

Can't wait to see the amazing playoff schedule. Let's play Boston (what else is new?) in round one and then perhaps the likes of San Jose or Anaheim down the road. Yeah that's going to make for better hockey.

And what's the deal with 16 Western teams and 14 Eastern teams. What happens when Phoenix is moved?

It also irks me that the other Eastern teams basically travel by bus everywhere yet Montreal faces two Florida teams nearly 2,500 km away.

I can understand wanting Four divisions but to have Florida and Tampa with us makes no sense except to fill the arenas with the Snowbirds.

Rosalyn Roy: All teams have to travel to some extent. For the Habs and their Jekyll and Hyde persona, I'm not sure it plays a factor anyway. They can have three days off and still come out with no zip in their skates or play four games in a week and come out firing.

Frankly, I like playing more teams in the West. I'm sick to death of Boston, Philly, Toronto and not much else rammed down my throat year after year. I'd like to enjoy players from the other conferences too.

When the Habs are in the playoffs it's exciting for me, regardless of whom they are playing against. If we can get out of the new conference at all, I'll be happy but that's a long shot at best anyway.

After that it's all gravy.

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Florida and Tampa Bay got jammed into this conference in hopes of making them profitable. At least we're not them and having to commute almost every game to face pretty much everyone else within the division. The NHL is nothing if not consistent in trying to sustain its non-hockey cash strapped markets.

As for Phoenix, I'm sure we'll gripe about it when it happens. In the meantime I can speculate all I want, but it's clear Bettman will likely have to tweak depending on where they go.

Bryan Willey: I could care less about playing San Jose or Columbus or Colorado. I want to see the Habs play Boston eight times a year. Same for Toronto, Buffalo and Ottawa.

I like the way baseball does it with the teams playing only same league teams except for designated periods of the season.

Like you, I'm happy when the Canadiens are in the playoffs. I want to see the best hockey, not teams fatigued because of incessant cross-continental travel. Play in the East only and then make your way to the West for the Cup. That's how it is now and how it should remain.

And why are there 14 Eastern teams and 16 Western teams? It doesn't make sense that more than 50% make the playoffs in the east.

My guess on this is that Florida folds soon because they now have 11,000 more miles to travel and that's going to be costly to them.

What about the rest of you, do you like the league’s proposed realignment? How do you think it will impact the Habs?
