Press Release - Canadiens Sign Defenseman Raphael Diaz to a Two-Year Contract

MONTREAL (July 13, 2012) – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the signing of defenseman Raphael Diaz to a two-year contract (2012-13 and 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Diaz, 26, completed his first season with the Canadiens in the NHL in 2011-12. The 5’11’’, 191 lbs defenseman recorded 16 points (3 goals, 13 assists) in 59 games. He tallied one winning goal, added 61 shots on goal and served 30 penalty minutes, while averaging 18:00 of ice time per game. Diaz blocked 102 shots, ranking third among rookie defensemen in the NHL. He missed the team’s last 16 games of the season due to a season-ending groin injury.

A native of Baar, Switzerland, Diaz was part of the All-Rookie Team at the NHL All-Star Weekend.

He first signed with the Canadiens as a free agent on May 13, 2011.

Habs Press Release - Marc Bergevin appointed General Manager

MONTREAL (May 2, 2012) – Montreal Canadiens Owner, President and CEO, Geoff Molson, announced today the appointment of Marc Bergevin as Executive Vice President and General Manager.

Marc Bergevin becomes the 17th General Manager in Canadiens history. Bergevin, 46, spent the last seven seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks organization, including the past season (2011-12) as assistant general manager under Stan Bowman.

A native of Pointe-Saint-Charles, Montreal, Bergevin has held various positions within the Blackhawks organization, including director of player personnel for two seasons (2009 to 2011), winning the Stanley Cup in his first season as director of player personnel in 2009-10. Bergevin served as an assistant coach on Joel Quenneville’s staff during the 2008-09 campaign. He also spent three years on the Blackhawks scouting staff (2005 to 2008), including one season as director of professional scouting (2007-08).

Originally selected by the Blackhawks in the third round (59th overall) in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, Bergevin enjoyed a 20-season career as a defenceman in the National Hockey League, collecting 181 points (36 goals, 145 assists) in 1,191 regular season games with Chicago (1984-89), the New York Islanders (1989-90), Hartford Whalers (1990-92), Tampa Bay Lightning (1992-95, 2002-03), Detroit Red Wings (1995-96), St. Louis Blues (1996-2001, 2001-02) Pittsburgh Penguins (2000-01, 2002-04) and Vancouver Canucks (2003-04).

Bergevin also skated in 80 career playoff contests, reaching the Conference finals twice in 1996 (Detroit) and in Pittsburgh (2001).

Bergevin played his junior hockey in the QMJHL with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, from 1982 to 1984 (136 regular season games).

Marc Bergevin and his wife, Ruth, have three children.

Habs Press Release - Carey Price Earns Molson Cup For February

CAREY PRICE EARNS MOLSON CUP HONOUR FOR FEBRUARY

MONTREAL (March 1, 2012) – Netminder Carey Price is the Molson Cup recipient for the month of February.

Price, who was the overall Molson Cup award winner in 2010-11, is the recipient of the award for the fourth month of the 2011-12 season, after taking the honours in October, November and once again in December. Max Pacioretty earned the award in January.

Price was twice selected first star of the game (on February 5 against Winnipeg and February 11 versus Toronto), twice second star (on February 9 against the New York Islanders and February 17 at Buffalo) and a third star (on February 7 against Pittsburgh). He finished ahead of teammates Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec.

Price had a 5-6-1 record playing 12 of the Canadiens’ 14 games in February, with two shutouts (on February 5 and 11) and a 2.40 goals against average. He stopped 318 of the 347 shots he faced for a .916 save percentage.

Carey Price will be presented with the Molson Cup during a short ceremony prior to tonight’s game against the Minnesota Wild at the Bell Centre.

Canadiens assign Louis Leblanc to the Hamilton Bulldogs

MONTREAL (January 4, 2012) – The Montreal Canadiens announced Wednesday night that forward Louis Leblanc has been assigned to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs.

Recalled from the Bulldogs on November 28, the 6’0'' and 184 lbs centre played 14 games with the Canadiens since being called up, including his first NHL game on November 30 against the Ducks in Anaheim. Leblanc recorded five points (2 goals, 3 assists) including his first career NHL goal on December 15 against the Philadelphia Flyers. He registered 16 shots on goal, 17 hits and displayed a +2 plus/minus differential, while playing an average of 9 minutes and 54 seconds per game.

The 20-year old Pointe-Claire, Quebec native posted 10 points (4 goals and 6 assists) in 14 games thus far with the Bulldogs this season. Leblanc scored two of his goals on the powerplay. He added 48 shots on goal.

The Canadiens’ first round selection, 18th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Leblanc signed a 3-year contract with the Club on July 30, 2010.

MONTREAL (September 27, 2010) – The recipient of the Jean Béliveau trophy for the 2009-10 season will be honored during a ceremony prior to the game between the Florida Panthers and the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre tonight. For the occasion, Canadiens legend and Hall-of-Famer Jean Béliveau will be presenting the award to forward Maxim Lapierre for his charitable endeavors and involvement in the community.

The selection committee, comprised of members of the Board of directors of the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation, evaluated the candidates according to the effort, enthusiasm, implication and time invested in both collective and personal initiatives. Each nominee was also evaluated on his commitment, leadership and financial assistance to the causes close to his heart.

Maxim’s efforts in the community are particularly felt with the youth in need throughout the province of Quebec. Ever since he joined the NHL, Maxim has been adamant when it comes to supporting charitable organizations with a generous heart. Maxim responds in spontaneity whenever touched by an opportunity to partner with community groups and individuals in need. His motivation comes from the opportunity to be a positive role model for Quebec’s youth. He is motivated to give back to the community and strives to make a difference.

His contribution comes in part from his annual golf tournament which benefits the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation. In 2010, the 2nd edition of the Maxim Lapierre Tournament raised $50,000.

For the past two seasons, Maxim has been the spokesperson for the Canadiens game day lottery lending his name to the popular initiative in support of the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation. This year, Maxim accepted to be the spokesperson for the Riverside School Board campaign against bullying and violence at school and on the school bus.

Picard, who turned 25 on July 5, started the 2009-2010 NHL season with the Ottawa Senators before being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on February 12. Picard had a combined total of 15 points (4 goals, 11 assists) and 26 penalty minutes in 54 games.

The 6’3’’, 215-pound defenseman began his NHL career in 2005-2006 with the Philadelphia Flyers before joining the Tampa Bay Lightning in February 2008. Over the course of five NHL seasons, he played 193 games earning 16 goals, including 9 on the power-play and 41 assists for a total of 57 points.

Picard, who hails from Gatineau (QC), also played three seasons in the AHL, recording 74 points (16-58) in 135 games. A product of the QMJHL, he suited up with the Halifax Mooseheads (2001 to 2003 and 2004-05) and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (2003-03) tallying 122 points (31-91) in 255 games. He also played 56 playoff games in the QMJHL, adding 17 points (4-13) in 56 match-ups.

Picard was selected in the third round, 85th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

As per Club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Leblanc was selected in the first round, 18th overall, by the Canadiens at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2009-10, Leblanc suited up with the Harvard University Crimson in the ECAC. As a freshman with the Ivy League team, the 6’1’’ and 184 lbs centreman led his team in several offensive categories, including goals (11), assists (12), points (23), game-winning goals (3) in 31 games and ranked second for power-play tallies (3) and shots on goal (101). The youngest player on the Crimson team, Leblanc was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, was a finalist for ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year and was named to the ECAC All-Rookie team. Following the 2009-10 season, the Kirkland native was named to Canada’s National Junior Team Camp in preparation of the World Junior Hockey Championship to start on December 26, 2010 in Buffalo, NY.

Prior to enrolling at Harvard, Leblanc, made his mark with the Omaha Lancers in the USHL, leading that team with 59 points in 60 games and earning the Rookie of the Year honour in 2008-09. Before joining the Lancers, Leblanc played for the Lac St.

Louis Lions, leading the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League in goals (54) and points (91) playing 43 games in 2007-08. On the international stage, he was a member of Team Quebec at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2007 Canada Winter Games. The following year he played for Team Canada at the 2008 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament scoring three goals (3-2-5), helping Canada win gold.

Habs announce six appointments in club’s hockey department

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens’ Executive VP Hockey and General Manager Pierre Gauthier announced Tuesday six appointments within the club’s hockey department.

Serge Boisvert and Ryan Jankowski will join the Canadiens’ amateur scouting group. Vaughn Karpan becomes a professional scout, and Christer Rockstrom will assume scouting duties for European leagues as of September 1st.

At the administrative level, the team announced the appointment of Ken Morin as hockey information coordinator.

Finally, Pierre Allard becomes the Canadiens’ new strength and conditioning coach.

SERGE BOISVERT, amateur scout
Serge Boisvert joined the Canadiens in 2009 as a consultant in player development. The former right winger played with the Canadiens from 1984 to 1988, and was a member of the 1986 Stanley Cup Championship team.

RYAN JANKOWSKI, amateur scout
Ryan Jankowski was employed by the New York Islanders as assistant general manager and director of amateur scouting since 2006. He joined the Islanders as amateur scout in 2002, before spending three years in Prague as the team’s Director of European scouting.

VAUGHN KARPAN, professional scout
Vaughn Karpan becomes professional scout following five years as part of the Canadiens’ amateur scouting group. He joined the Canadiens in 2005, after spending several seasons as Chief Scout for the Phoenix Coyotes and the Winnipeg Jets.

CHRISTER ROCKSTROM, scout (Europe)
Christer Rockstrom was a member of the New York Rangers organization for the past 21 years, including the past five seasons as Director of Player Personnel - Europe. He previously served as a European scout for the Rangers for 16 years. He also covered part of Europe as a scout for the Detroit Red Wings organization, from 1984 to 1989.

KEN MORIN, hockey information coordinator
Ken Morin is the former captain of the McGill Redmen hockey team, where he earned a degree in Industrial Relations. Last season, he played as a defenseman with the CIS Royal Military College team, and the Bakersfield Condors in the ECHL.

PIERRE ALLARD, strength and conditioning coach
Pierre Allard was a strength and conditioning consultant for the past decade. He spent the 2009 10 season as strength and conditioning coach with Berlin and Hamburg in the German hockey league. He also worked with the QMJHL Rimouski Oceanic, and as a consultant for Hockey Quebec. He works with several NHL players in the offseason.

Montreal (April 26, 2010) – The Montreal Canadiens announced today that defenseman P.K. Subban has been recalled from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs. Subban will be at practice this morning, and will be available for tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals at the Bell Centre.

Subban, 20, had been recalled from Hamilton for the first time this season on February 11. The 6’ ’ 206 lbs 00’, defenseman played two games with the Canadiens, and recorded two points (0-2-2).

Subban ranked third in scoring with the Bulldogs this season, third amongst AHL defensemen with 53 points in 77 regular season games (18 goals, 35 assists). The Toronto native scored 11 powerplay goals, added 188 shots on goal and 82 penalty minutes, and maintained a +46 plus/minus differential.

Subban contributed to the Bulldogs victory over the Manitoba Moose in the first round of the AHL playoffs. The Bulldogs eliminated the Moose in six games with a 3-2 overtime win last night in Hamilton. Subban led the Bulldogs with nine playoff points (3 goals, 6 assists), including two game-winning goals. He led the Bulldogs in playoff points, tied for fifth in the AHL.

JAROSLAV HALAK NAMED THE CANADIENS 2009-10 MOLSON CUP PLAYER OF THE YEAR

MONTREAL (April 9, 2010) – Goaltender Jaroslav Halak is the Montreal Canadiens Molson Cup Player of the Year for the 2009-10 season. Halak succeeds goaltender Carey Price who was the recipient in 2008-09.

Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, Halak completed the season with 63 points in the Molson Cup standings. He had 10 first-star selections, four (4) second-star selections and one (1) third star selection ending the season on top of the standings ahead of teammates Carey Price (48 points) and Tomas Plekanec (43 points). Halak was named the Canadiens’ Player-of-the-Month in December (20 points), and for the January and February segment (25 points).

Halak who played in 44 games during the regular season, posted a record of 26 wins, 13 losses and 4 overtime/shootout losses with a 2.36 goals-against-average (8th in the NHL) and a .926 save percentage (3rd in the NHL). Halak recorded five shutouts in 2009-10, while setting a new personal high with a 157:45 minutes shutout streak from January 22 to 26. He also went 156:30 minutes without allowing a goal from March 27 to April 6, recording back-to-back shutouts on April 2 and 3. Halak was twice named the NHL First Star for the Week this season, for the week ending on December 27 (3-0-0, 1.97 GAA, .959 save percentage – 140 saves on 146 shots) and for the week ending on April 4 (2-0-0, 0.00 GAA, 1.000 save percentage – 64 saves on 64 shots).

Earlier this week, Halak was voted by the Montreal chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association(PHWA) as the team’s candidate for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for the 2009-10 season. The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Josh Gorges voted the 2009-10 Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy recipient

MONTREAL (April 9, 2010) – Members of the media covering the Montreal Canadiens selected defenseman Josh Gorges as the 2009-10 recipient of the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to the member of the Canadiens who played a dominant role during the regular season, without earning any particular honor.

Gorges succeeds Maxim Lapierre who captured the award for the 2008-09 season and ranked third in the standings in last year’s voting.

Gorges received the most first-place votes in the race for the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy, with a total of 138 points in the overall standings, finishing ahead of teammates Glen Metropolit (124 points) and Marc-André Bergeron (24 points).

A native of Kelowna, BC, Gorges finished second on the Canadiens with a total of 1,704:48 minutes of play. He also led the Canadiens with a per game average of 3:11 minutes on the penalty killing. Gorges blocked 158 shots this season, first on the Canadiens and 12th in NHL. He also scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the first regular game this season at Toronto.

The 6-1, 200-pound defenseman, who only missed one game in the 2008-09 season, played every game this season. Gorges was the Canadiens’ candidate to the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2008-09, awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Created in 1981 to honor the memory of a sportswriter who spent most of his professional career covering the Canadiens, the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy was first awarded to Doug Jarvis following the 1981-82 season.

Over the years, Craig Ludwig (1982-83, 1984-85, 1985-86) and Mike McPhee (1987-88, 1989-90, 1990-91) each won the award three times, while Benoit Brunet received the Trophy on two occasions (1994-95, 1998-99).

Bob Gainey remains with the organization as Special Advisor to the General Manager

MONTRÉAL (February 8, 2010) – Montreal Canadiens President, Pierre Boivin, announced today the appointment of Pierre Gauthier as Executive Vice-President and General Manager. He also announced that Bob Gainey remains with the organization as Special Advisor to the General Manager.

Pierre Gauthier joined the Montreal Canadiens organization as Director of Professional Scouting on July 21, 2003. On July 24, 2006, he was named Assistant to General Manager Bob Gainey, while holding on to the responsibilities of professional
scouting, an area in which he is particularly familiar with, having spent almost 30 years in player recruitment at various levels.

Pierre Gauthier has extensive NHL experience having held the positions of President, General Manager, Assistant General Manager, Director of Professional Scouting as well as Head of Amateur Scouting.

Gauthier, who was born in Montreal, worked with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim during six seasons, serving as Assistant General Manager in their first two seasons in the NHL from 1993 to 1995. On December 11, 1995, he was named General Manager of the Ottawa Senators and teamed up with Jacques Martin. They led the Senators to the Stanley Cup playoffs in their first complete season together in 1996-97. The following season, the Senators won their first ever playoff series and
reached the second round of the playoffs. On July 16, following two and a half seasons as General Manager of the Ottawa Senators, from 1995 to 1998, he returned to the Mighty Ducks’organization as team President and was named General Manager of the Anaheim franchise on August 6, 1998. Pierre Gauthier served as General Manager of the Mighty Ducks for four seasons, from 1998 to 2002. The team earned a playoff berth in his first year back, in 1998-1999.

Gauthier originally came to the Anaheim organization from the Quebec Nordiques where he spent 12 seasons from 1981 to 1993, serving in all areas of scouting, including the position of Chief Scout from 1988 to 1993.

Gauthier was also involved at the international level. Along with Bob Gainey and Bobby Clarke, he was one of three NHL General Managers with Team Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. He was also Team Canada’s
General Manager for the gold medal winning team at the 1997 World Championships in Finland, as well as for the silver medal winning team at the 1996 World Championship in Austria. He was also a member of Team Canada’ hockeys management at the 2009 World Championships in Switzerland.

Bob Gainey became the 15th General Manager in the history of the Montreal Canadiens on June 2, 2003. Under his leadership, the Canadiens earned a playoff berth four out of five years, and recorded at least 40 wins in all five seasons between 2003 and 2009. The team finished atop the Eastern Conference standings in 2007-08, and second in the Northeast Division in 2008-09. Under the guidance of Bob Gainey, the Canadiens posted a 241-176-46-7 record in 470 regular season games, for a .569 winning percentage.

On February 23, 2008, the Canadiens officially retired his No. 23 jersey in a ceremony at the Bell Centre.

THE MONTREAL CANADIENS DONATE $159,553 TO PROVIDE IMMEDIATE RELIEF TO HAITI
MONTREAL (January 20, 2010) – The Montreal Canadiens are pleased to announce the results of their fundraising efforts to provide relief to Haiti. The generosity of Montreal Canadiens fans has been overwhelming with a contribution of $59,553 collected on January 14 and 16 at the Bell Centre. In a pre-game message broadcast on January 14, Club president Pierre Boivin indicated that the Montreal Canadiens would match the total amount of donations made by the fans.

However, as the needs for assistance in Haiti keep growing, the Montreal Canadiens along with the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation not only chose to match the amount collected, but decided to increase the organization’s overall contribution to reach $100,000. As a result, the total amount donated to UNICEF to support humanitarian assistance and relief efforts for the population in Haiti will reach $159,553.

UNICEF is actively involved in the survival, protection and development of children in more than 150 countries around the world providing health care, food, medical supplies in devastated areas.
