Pregame Preview: Canadiens vs Blue Jackets (Game #71)

montreal canadiens vs columbus blue jackets nhl
Match Up:

The Canadiens (38-25-7) are home to host the Blue Jackets (35-27-6) Thursday night at the Bell Centre. The game starts at 7:30 and can be seen on RDS and TSN-Habs.

This is the third and final meeting between the Habs and Blue Jackets with the Canadiens aiming for the season sweep. The Habs have won a pair of close games. In their 5-3 win in Montreal, Plekanec's game winner came with just over a minute left in the game. When these teams played in Columbus, the Habs earned a 3-2 shootout win, David Desharnais had the only penalty shot goal.

What to Watch:

Thomas Vanek scored his first goal as a Canadien Tuesday night, and then his second, and then his third. The hat trick was the 8th of Vanek's career, he had 4 3-goal games in 2007-2008 alone. The fourth line of Travis Moen, Dale Weise and Brandon Prust have combined for 4 goals over the past 2 games for the Habs, they played an integral role in the 6-3 win over the Avalanche on Tuesday

Despite directing 47 shots at Anton Khudobin, the Blue Jackets lost 3-1 to the Hurricanes on Tuesday, scoring their first goal with less than a minute left in the game. Former Hab James Wisniewski had 6 shots on goal Tuesday, bringing him up to 140 on the year, 6 shy of his career high for a season. With 26 goals and 51 points, 21-year old Ryan Johansen leads the BJs in scoring.

What's at Stake:

The Lightning's 5-3 win over the Maple Leafs draws the Bolts even with the Habs at 83 points and leaves the Leafs a step behind at 80 points with two more games played than Tampa and one more than the Canadiens. The race in the Atlantic division is strictly for second place, the Bruins have a 16 point cushion with the season winding down.

After missing out on the playoffs last year by virtue of a lost tiebreaker to the Minnesota Wild (both teams finished with 55 points but the Wild had 3 more regulation or overtime wins), the Blue Jackets once again find themselves tied for the final playoff spot with the end of the season looming. The team is looking for just their second playoff berth in franchise history, as well as their first postseason victory, they were swept by the Red Wings in their first trip to the playoffs.

Who's Out:

Michael Bournival (concussion) is healthy enough to play but has been sent to Hamilton on a reconditioning assignment. Josh Gorges is still out with a broken hand.

The Blue Jackets are missing rookie defenseman Ryan Murray (lower body).

What Else:

For the second straight game, the Habs welcome a Vezina trophy winner to the Bell Centre, and this time, he'll actually be between the pipes. After the Patrick Roy show swept through town on Tuesday, the Habs play host to last year's top netminder, Sergei Bobrovsky. Bob the goalie has take a bit of a step back from last season when he posted a 2.00 GAA and a .932 save percentage, this year his goals against average is up to 2.49 and his save percentage has slipped to .919.

The Question Mark:

Let us know what you think, if the Canadiens played to their their full potential, how far could they go in this year's playoffs?

Habs/Blue Jackets Post Game October 17th, 2013

The west coast trip was a success for the Habs. Rather than rest on their laurels they came back on home ice and came out strong for the 21,000 plus in attendance.

At times it looked like the Jackets would mount a comeback after they tied the game up at 3. But a late marker from Tomas Plekanec in the final 2 minutes paired with the eventual empty netter would seal the deal for the Bleu Blanc Rouge.

They opened up the scoring early on. A power-play goal by Bourque set up by a gorgeous cross ice pass from P.K. Subban. It's becoming a habit to mention Subban and the score-sheet, he now has 10 points in 7 games this season which is tied for 2nd in the league.

Along with P.K.,Andrei Markov managed to jump start the offense tonight. Markov scored a shorthanded goal when the Blue Jackets received a power-play on a questionable elbowing call issued to Subban. During this penalty-kill the fore-check made the Jackets cough up the puck in their zone and end up right on the stick of Markov who ripped a shot by Bobvroski.

Bobrovski, the current Vezina holder stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced and was the reason that the game didn't get out of hand much earlier as the Habs did create many difficult chances early on.

In nets for the Canadiens was Carey Price. Coming off a shutout in his last outing he put together a respectable performance and stopped 30 of 33. He was saved early on by a great defensive play by Josh Gorges, the puck was free in front of the net while the Jackets were scrambling towards the goal he cleared it away with his stick. Gorges also contributed offensively with a helper.

The Blue Jackets managed to get a stand out performance from Boone Jenner, the youngster put up a pair of goals and led the team with 6 shots on goal.

Scoring his first goal as a Canadien was Michael Bournival. He ripped a one timer fed to him from Markov. The moment, scored on home ice, will forever be remembered by the youngster who is solidifying his place on the roster as the games go by. His mix of grinding play combined with some offensive punch are quickly making him a viable option to fill in for the injuries that are quickly piling up.

On the injury front it was announced that Pacioretty would be missing at least the next 3 weeks. His natural ability to find the back of the net will be missed, this will force the team to pull together with scoring from other sources. It was a good time for Bourque to make his presence felt, as well as Plekanec.

One observation this evening, was the distribution of ice-time between the top 2 defense pairings. While Diaz led all defencemen with 23:41, Markov was a close second 23:35 and Gorges and Subban came in with 22 minutes each. The ability to provide some time to rest his stars is a not just a testament to the performance of his third and forth defenders but also help prevent any further injuries to the already decimated blue-line.

Tthe Canadiens will have much to prove being on home ice for the next few games. They are making a statement: They intend to compete for top spot in their division rather than simply fight for a playoff spot this season.

NHL 2013-2014 Conference Previews - Metropolitan

Paolo Migarelli comes east, and takes a look at the not-so-well named Metropolitan Conference.

The old Atlantic has been renamed and re-tooled. Add the Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes and one of the 2 newcomers in the East, the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Renowned as one of the premier divisions boasting its representation by as much as 4 playoff teams before the merger, they will again be one of the tougher divisions to play in and will make for great fireworks down the stretch.

NHL Withdraws Offer, Hamilton Bulldogs, Habs' CHL Prospects, More

Gary Bettman (Photo: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
Happy Friday!

The October 25th deadline imposed the NHL for the scheduling of a complete, 82-game season has passed.

As a result, actual games will now be removed from the 2012-13 calendar and the NHL has withdrawn it's previous offer.

Both sides unfortunately seem quite distant on the subject of a new CBA.

Habs and Hockey News

- The Hamilton Bulldogs get set to face the Toronto Marlies tonight for the third time this season. The farm team lost Tuesday's contest against the Rochester Americans and will have to face their cross-province rivals without Louis Leblanc.

- HabsWorld reports on the progress of the Montreal Canadiens' CHL prospects.

- Amidst all the doom and gloom surrounding the CBA negotiations, Stu Hackel focuses in on some of the more positive news surrounding the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders.

- Russia's KHL was scheduled to play two regular season games in Brooklyn this January, but it now appears those games have been cancelled.

Montreal Canadiens Grades, CBA Talks, Gallagher, Eberle and More

Brandon Prust - Montreal Canadiens v New York Rangers
Good AM Hab fans!

Recently, Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated has been doling out grades to the 30 NHL teams for their off-season performance.

Naturally, teams like the Minnesota Wild and Carolina Hurricanes ranked near the top of the class.

As for the Montreal Canadiens, they were given a B-minus by Mr. Muir.

The Habs did not make a huge splash in any one area, but they did add some sandpaper, retained some key players and held a widely praised draft.

I would certainly give that a B myself. What about you? How would you grade Habs' management this summer?

Habs and Hockey News

- As it turns out, no CBA talks were held yesterday. Apparently, they are slated to resume today - Friday. The aforementioned Allan Muir has some notes about the discussions and other league happenings.

- Habs Eyes on the Prize continue their countdown of the organization's top players under 25. Today, they focus on diminutive winger Brendan Gallagher.

- The Edmonton Oilers have locked-up winger Jordan Eberle to a six-year, $36 million exension.

- Over at The Hockey News, Ryan Kennedy profiles the ever-underdog Columbus Blue Jackets.

- Here is a story I did not know about. Three forwards for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds's were recently charged and are not attending their team's training camp. Rather, as per USA Today, the trio is attending counselling.

Jeff Skinner Extension, Rene Bourque Profile, Erik Cole and More

Jeff Skinner - Tampa Bay Lightning v Carolina Hurricanes
Good AM Habs fans!

Well, it sure seems that the Carolina Hurricanes are not messing around this summer.

After trading for Jordan Staal, signing Marc-André Gragnani, Joe Corvo and Alex Semin, Jim Rutherford is now apparently close to inking Jeff Skinner to a long-term extension.

Bob McKenzie reports that the deal is for six years at around $5.75 million per season.

Given their similar ages and importance to their teams, one has to wonder if this deal will somehow impact the contract P.K Subban eventually receives. And, yes, I know one is a forward and another a defenseman.

Habs and Hockey News

Alex Galchenyuk Signs, Rick Nash to Rangers, Kostitsyn, Julien and More

Rick Nash - Columbus Blue Jackets v Colorado Avalanche
Happy Tuesday Hab fans!

Finally, the Rick Nash Saga is over, as the star winger has been traded to the New York Rangers.

In return, the Columbus Blue Jackets received Artem Anisimiov, Brandon Dubinsky, Tim Erixon and a 2013 first round pick.

Many are quick to praise the Rangers for this move, especially since they were not forced to give up any perceived core pieces. Still, I can't help but wonder if Nash is really the answer to their offensive woes. After all, in his NHL career, the forward has only reached the 70-point plateau once.

What are your thoughts on the move?

Habs and Hockey News

- In Habs news, third overall pick Alex Galchenyuk signed an entry level deal with the organization. Including bonuses, his cap-hit will be $3.25 million.

- Our Sean Lloyd profiles blueliner Raphael Diaz.

- Darren Dreger comments on the Rick Nash deal and offers the latest on Shea Weber. Meanwhile at ESPN, Scott Burnside argues that the Blue Jackets obtained too many maybes in return for their star winger. Finally, The Hockey News' Ken Campbell feels like Nash still has much too prove.

- Kris Versteeg and former Hab Sergei Kostitsyn re-sign with their respective clubs, thus avoiding arbitration.

- Former Montreal bench boss Claude Julien signs an extension with the Boston Bruins.

NHL Trade Deadline: Could the Montreal Canadiens Land Rick Nash?

Let me start by saying no, the Montreal Canadiens cannot land Rick Nash.

With the NHL trade deadline less than 48 hours away, Nash is the most coveted player available on the trade market.

Some may argue that L.A.'s Dustin Brown holds that title — because the Kings won't require as much in return — however, it's become unclear over the last 24 hours whether or not the Kings captain is available.

With endless rumors swirling about who will end up where, I thought it would be fun to throw out a scenario, albeit an incredibly improbable one, in which the Canadiens would find themselves landing the star winger.

The reality is the Habs don't have the roster players to match the rumored offer that the New York Rangers have on the table. It involves either Michael Del Zotto/Ryan McDonagh plus either Derek Stepan, Brandon Dubinsky or Carl Hagelin, and a first round pick.

Montreal's advantage over the Rangers lies in there draft position.

Columbus is on track to have the first pick at this June's draft. If the two club's were able to hammer out a deal involving Montreal's first round pick, that would give Columbus two picks in the top ten.

With the Habs porous play, a pick in the top five seems more realistic and a top three pick is not out of the question either.

Now for the problem.

If Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson were to be interested in the Canadiens pick, it would have to be in a package including Scott Gomez.

Nash comes with a price tag of $7.8 million so the only way the Habs could make it work is if they were to send Gomez, and his $7.357 million, the other way.

Montreal would have to add a few assets to sweeten the pot, maybe Andrei Kostitsyn and a prospect —Louis Leblanc, Brendan Gallagher, or Michael Bournival — and maybe even their second round pick acquired from Nashville in the trade that sent Hal Gill to the Preds.

Of course, the only way this dream could become reality is if Howson were to be blinded by the possibility of drafting twice, early on in a draft. Keep in mind that this year's draft has many promising prospects such as Nail Yakupov, Mikhail Grigorenko, Matthew Dumba, Filip Forsberg, and Morgan Rielly, to name a few.

The unfortunate reality is that Gomez's downside more than likely outweighs another top pick in June.

If Montreal had more to offer, other than their pick, it would help their chances. But the Canadiens don't have anything to offer that could help Columbus' offense after Nash's departure.

As far fetched as it seems, if Howson were to bite would you be willing to part with a top five pick—and possibly top three—and a prospect to bring Nash to Montreal?

Would a superstar winger help out the Habs or should they hold off for the center they've needed for years?

What are your thoughts?

Habs/Caps, Subban Scuffle, Hamrlik, Carter and More

Roman Hamrlik - Washington Capitals v Pittsburgh Penguins
Morning puck addicts!

Wow. There is much to talk about this morning.

The Canadiens face the middling Capitals tonight. Remember how that was a premiere match up only a couple of years ago?

P.K Subban has once again found himself in the middle of a scuffle at practice.

Roman Hamrlik called out Dale Hunter on Washington radio. His comment was pretty good too.

And Jeff Carter was sent to L.A. Columbus received Jack Johnson and a first round pick in return.

The timing of this trade is unfortunate. Sort of. I was going to write a Trade Deadline preview piece on him. Too slow I suppose.

Busy Thursday, eh?

What do you think of the above events?

Habs News, Targeting Chris Stewart, Kostitsyn, Ruutu and More

Andrei Kostitsyn - Montreal Canadiens v Toronto Maple Leafs
Morning Hab addicts.

Much like last week, the Canadiens have an unusual schedule that will see them play on Friday and Sunday.

Feels a bit odd to break the routine and not see them drop the puck on a Thursday.

Then again, I am convinced that after their performance against the Stars, not too many will be overly sad about that.

Elsewhere, in a piece of good news for Montreal, Tuomo Ruutu re-signed with the Carolina Hurricanes for four years.

Why is this good news?

Because, with arguably the most coveted rental forward off the market (notice the term 'rental' - Rick Nash and Jeff Carter do not apply here), Andrei Kostitsyn's value increases significantly.

If Pierre Gauthier choose to shop him, of course.

Our Kamal Panesar feels that Montreal should re-sign him.

What do you think?

Habs lose in SO, Playing GM, Nash and More

Morning puck fans.

Well, that was both discouraging and heartbreaking, wasn't it?

When given a two goal cushion, Boston is undefeated this season. Considering that, just the fact that Montreal forced overtime is rather impressive.

Considering that the Habs are miles away from a playoff berth, the loss of that extra point difficult to swallow.

If nothing else, though, it was a pleasant sight to see Montreal play a genuinely physical game. Not only that, but it looked like most of the team was more than able to keep up with the aggressive tempoof the game.

In fact, on the official score sheet, the Canadiens out hit Boston by a 27-16 margin. Only five Montreal players did not officially register a hit and, interestingly enough, Mathieu Darche led the team in that department with six bodychecks.

As for the goalies... I'd rather not talk about it. I might get called for interference.

Canadiens/Blues, Halak, Gomez, Arniel and More

Jaroslav Halak - Edmonton Oilers v St Louis Blues
Morning puck fans!

Lots of buzz around the web about the return of 2010 playoff hero, Jaroslav Halak.

As you certainly remember, the Slovak netminder helped steer the Canadiens to the conference finals with his superb play before eventually bowing out to the Flyers.

He finished that post-season with a .921 save percentage.

But, according to Halak, tonight's contest against his former team is "just another game".

Of course it is, Jaro.

That's like saying running into your ex is "just running into another person".

Canadiens/Islanders, Terry Murray Fired, Kaberle, Crosby and More

Good morning addicts.
Terry Murray - Los Angeles Kings v Phoenix Coyotes
As it turns out, the fifth member of the coaching brethren was fired yesterday as Terry Murray was let go by the Los Angeles Kings. He will be replaced on an interim basis by John Stevens.

Stevens, you may recall, coached the Philadelphia Flyers a few years ago. Namely, he led the Flyers to the Conference Final in 2008.

Five coaches have been fired so far and yet Scott Arniel of the Columbus Blue Jackets still has his job. Confusing, isn't it?

Canadiens - Jackets: Rick Nash Scores Shootout Winner to Drop Listless Habs

It seems that any time the Montreal Canadiens have more than a day off rumours, innuendo and other forms of insanity start to swirl.

And swirl they did the last few days with the revelation that Habs All-Star defenseman, Andrei Markov, was not ready for play and would need another operation on his twice surgically repaired knee.

That's all anyone has been talking about since the Habs win over the Kings. That and the return of Max Pacioretty from his three game suspension.

But these stories just distract from the real issue at hand:the Montreal Canadiens are struggling with inconsistency this season.

Montreal's problems continued against the Columbus Blue Jackets, where a bad line change and absent defensive zone coverage allowed Vaclav Prospal to score only 2:03 into the game.

Keep in mind that the Habs were playing the worst team in the NHL, in the Blue Jackets, and Montreal looked disorganized and disinterested most of the night. That they got one point out of the match is a stroke of pure luck, with Brian Gionta tying the game on a fluky goal with less than two minutes to play.

But make no mistake, this was a game the Blue Jackets deserved to win as the Canadiens were completely dominated, managing seven shots in the first, four in the second and 20 overall.

Final score: Jackets 3 - Habs 2 (SO)

Game Notes

The Carey Price Cup - Prior to the game Canadiens goaltender, Carey Price, was awarded the Molson Cup as the top three-star getter for the month of November.

That's the second time Price has won the award this season—it has only been awarded twice this year. He did the same thing last season too, winning on a consistent basis and taking the Molson Cup for the year.

It's pretty clear that Price is the Habs MVP and, on most nights, the only reason they bank any points.

As several users mentioned on Twitter, perhaps it's time to just rename the trophy the Carey Price Cup.

It's all wrong - Louis Leblanc on the fourth line. Michael Cammalleri on the penalty kill.

What is Jacques Martin doing?

I've written about the wise old coaches propensity for using Cammalleri on the PK before. This despite being Cammalleri being one of the weaker defensive players on the team and having a career minus-25.

That aside, why was Louis Leblanc—playing his first home game in front of friends and family—playing on the fourth line with Mathieu Darche and Petteri Nokelainen?

Leblanc has looked excellent on the third line with Lars Eller and Andrei Kostitsyn the last few games. That he was pushed to the fourth line in favour of Travis Moen is criminal.

I know, I know, Moen has eight goals so far this season. But let's be honest here, he is a bottom-six plugger who hasn't ever scored more than 11 goals in any one season.

Leblanc, on the other hand, is an offensive prospect who was recently brought up from Hamilton. If Montreal is going to keep him with the big club they must put him in a position to succeed. Otherwise just send him back down and let him keep progressing in Hamilton.

Leblanc's skills are wasted on the fourth line and his time there will not further his development.

Yannick Weber, oh how you've fallen - What exactly has happened to Yannick Weber?

He started off the season on good footing and looked like he had finally found a spot in the Canadiens lineup. But in recent games, especially the Habs three-game stretch out West, Weber's defensive play has been abysmal.

So much so that, including the game against the Jackets, the once plus-7 player now sits at minus-5 for the season. Also, his ice time, which has been averaging 18:09 per match, dropped to 13:40, 11:59 and 3:33 over the previous three games respectively.

Against the Jackets, Weber got 8:31 of ice time, was a minus-1 and saw 1:31 on the powerplay.

He is looking more and more like he has played himself off the team but, unfortunately for the Canadiens they have no choice but to play him. Injuries continue to force their hand.

Chris Campoli and Jaroslav Spacek can't come back soon enough!

House of cards - So how much longer can this continue?

Montreal has already fired one coach, their best defenseman is out for at least another 4-6 weeks, they highest paid player is injured and makes the Habs a worse team when he's in the lineup, they've lost a ton of players to injury, they have a sputtering power play, a coach whose rigidity often hamstrings the team, a philosophy that fails to put players in positions to succeed and, ultimately, this team shows far too often that they can't win unless Price let's in one goal or less.

Yet Habs general manager, Pierre Gauthier does nothing.

No trades. No demotions of key players to the minors. No drastic moves. Nothing.

The fans are sick of the mediocrity but no one in head office seems to be listening. Actually, I'm sure that's not the case, but it's certainly the impression Montreal's brass gives off.

While nothing has been said, you get the impression that this management team, coaching staff included, is hanging by a thread—as is the Habs season. Their fate goes as the Canadiens go and so far, Montreal has struggled to maintain a .500 record.

You'd figure that, at some point, either a major shakeup of the lineup or the management team will/has to take place. I'm just wondering if that move will come when it's too late for the Canadiens to salvage their season.

Stat of the night - Nine. That is the number of body checks Alexei Emelin had against the Jackets. And most of them were of the bone jarring variety.

To be honest, Emelin proved the only real entertainment and was the only reason for Habs fans to cheer.

He now leads the Habs with 75 hits for the year, placing him 15th league-wide.

Question of the night - As I wrote above, how long can this continue? It's a simple question with an overly complicated answer. I truly think that nothing short of a complete housecleaning will change the direction this team and franchise are headed in.

But, as much as Habs fans want it, I'm not sure that's actually in the cards.

Up Next - The Habs have the day off before taking on the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday at the Bell Centre.

The way this season has gone so far, the Habs will probably play their best game of the season against the 'Nucks. If not, and they lose again, you have to figure that the noose will tighten that much more around Martin, Gauthier et al.
