Montreal Canadiens TV Schedule for the 2014-15 Season

That is official, Habs fans will be able to watch every minute of every game for the next three seasons as Sportsnet announced yesterday that it has reached a three-year broadcast rights agreement with the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the official English-language regional television rights holder.

This new agreement begins this season and will include 42 regional games. When this new agreement is combined with the national package that includes the remaining 40 games, the NHL on Sportsnet will deliver all 82 games of the regular season to Canadiens fans across nine channels. This new deal, which ends after the 2016-17 season, will make Sportsnet the exclusive Canadian English-language broadcaster of the Bleu Blanc Rouge. So goodbye TSN!

Have you ever wondered why NHL teams that win their respective Conference Championship sometimes do or don't pick up the championship trophy?

At the right, Zach Parise, former captain of the New Jersey Devils, refused to even get close to the Prince of Wales trophy, yet still lost in the 2012 Stanley Cup finals to the Los Angeles Kings?

Or why did Patrick Roy insist on never skating over the lines on the ice? How about Ron Hextall's neurotic tapping of his goal posts during every face-off? And really, what could possibly happen to someone who shaves off their playoff beard?

Athletes, whether in hockey or other sports, are a superstitious lot. Baseball players have been known to jump over the baselines, like Chicago Cubs' pitcher Curt Windell. Tiger Woods has always worn red on championship Sundays, but what does red have to do with a sports like golf, which is played on greens?

Regardless of the answers, they will never really make any sense. Superstitions are fragments of an individual mind, where an person's routine has coincided with a memorable moment in their lives. Does spilling salt really bring bad luck? And for the matter, what does throwing more over your left shoulder do to remedy the possibility of jinxing yourself?

Tom Puchniak from PMA Productions is in the process of putting together a documentary of those very beliefs together for CBC. This is your chance as Habs' fans to possibly get your faces on TV. Just think, when was the last time not changing your underwear until the playoffs are over ever get you any attention, other than the awful stench?

Games Cancelled Thru Jan. 14th, Finland Beats Canada, More...

Thursday afternoon, the National Hockey League made the long anticipated announcement that games would be cancelled through January 14th, 2013. To date, 625 total games have been cancelled. It's expected that, while the NHL will not admit to it, this may very well be the last set of games cancelled before the entire season is scrapped.

Although NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly affirmed that there would be hockey this season in an interview with Elliotte Friedman on Wednesday, hope continues to dwindle.

Meanwhile, the league and NHL fans await, with angst and trepidation, the results of player voting to decide if the NHLPA will pursue its "disclaimer of interest." Should the union get the necessary 66% support from its members, expect that paper will be filed as earlier as Friday afternoon in the State of California.

Habs and Hockey News and Notes:

- Team Canada lost its first of two preparatory games versus Team Finland on Thursday morning. In a report on TSN.ca, the Fins took advantage of Canada's undisciplined play to give them an early wake up call before the WJHC begins on Boxing Day.

- Montreal Canadiens' top draft choice in 2012, Alex Galchenyuk was held off the scoresheet in a 3-2 overtime victory by Team U.S.A. over Sweden. That said, Habs' General Manager Marc Bergavin assured U.S.A. Hockey that Galchenyuk would remain in Russia regardless of the lockout situation.

- First U.S. President Barrack Obama chimed in, now CBC Sports tell us how Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper admitted that the NHL is treading in dangerous territory in its latest labour dispute.

- Unlike most NHL players, the lockout has only just begun for Habs' winger Rene Bourque, due to an abdominal injury he sustained during the off-season. Stu Cowan of Hockey Inside/out has the details.

NHL and NHLPA Talk, Junior Players, Roggie Vachon and More

Happy Sunday!

Quiet today on the news front, but at least it appears that the NHL and NHLPA are maintaining at least some form of dialogue.

While most people still believe there will be some form of lockout, not everyone shares that view. In fact, Ron MacLean, the famed host of Hockey Night in Canada, flat out believes there will be absolutely no work stoppage.

- HabsWorld's Fantasy Focus takes a look at emerging Swiss defenseman Raphael Diaz. As you will recall, our Sean Lloyd also profiled him a few a weeks ago.

- Some agents are worried about what will happen to Junior players if there is an NHL lockout.

- Over at HockeyBuzz, Adam French lists the top-five German born prospects. I always love such lists, especially when it is for slightly less traditional hockey countries.

- Famed goalie Roggie Vachon turned 67 yesterday.

- We know that the Detroit Red Wings lost Niklas Lidstrom, Brad Stuart and Jiri Hudler over the summer. But we also perhaps forgot that Tomas Holmstrom is not likely to return. They will be a very different team.

- Did you know that the KHL is now in seven countries and now includes famed Slovak club Slovan Bratislava. Apparently, Croatia and Italy are also serious candidates to join the KHL in the near future.

Jacques Martin on Radio-Canada's Tout le monde en parle

Earlier this season, many fans and journalists were calling for the head of Jacques Martin.

It was said that his methods were outdated, his communication skills inadequate.

On December 17th 2011, these people got their wish. Martin was relieved of his duties, replaced by Randy Cunneyworth.

Be careful what you wish for. Not only were the Canadiens – who would eventually lead the league in man-games lost to injury – only two points out of a playoff berth, but it also turns out that Jacques Martin is a far more pleasant, good humored and loquacious individual than many had given him credit.

Last night, he appeared on Radio-Canada’s Tout le monde en parle program and delivered a highly-entertaining interview.
