Playoff Preview: Canadiens at Bruins (Round 2, Game 7)

HabsBruinsPlayoffs
Match Up:

Wednesday night, the Canadiens and Bruins square off one final time this season, for the 12th time this season and the 903rd time overall. Boston will host Game 7 for the third time in the last four meetings, dating back to 2004 when only Andrei Markov and Patrice Bergeron were in the lineups for Montreal's 2-0 win.

Max Pacioretty, Lars Eller and Thomas Vanek pitched in with the offense in Montreal's 4-0 win on Monday to force Game 7, while Price posted 26 saves for the shutout, with a little help from David Desharnais.

The game starts at 7 and airs on CBC and RDS.

What to Watch:

The Habs have found some serious production from their defensemen in this series. PK Subban has 4 goals and 3 assists, Weaver and Bouillon have both chipped in with goals, Markov has all of his 5 assists in the in these playoffs against the Bruins and even Nathan Beaulieu chipped in with an assist in his first ever NHL playoff game. The better news for the Habs was that in Game 6 the offensive stars kicked in, as Vanek, Eller and Pacioretty took care of the scoring. Vanek had his second two-goal game of the series on Monday.

The Bruins stayed true-to-form in this series, they haven't relied on one hero for success and spread the scoring around. Reilly Smith has led the way with 3 goals, as many as the top-line of Jarome Iginla, Milan Lucic and David Krejci have scored combined. Krejci led the Bruins in points this year with 69, but he has just 3 assists in 11 playoff games so far.

What's at Stake:

Game 7. Win and move on, lose and go home.

Who's Out:

Alex Galchenyuk (knee) might be just a few days from being game ready, but he'll miss his second straight playoff series for the Habs.

The Bruins won't get any of their wounded back for Game 7 either, Dennis Seidenberg (lower body), Chris Kelly (back) and Adam McQuaid (ankle) remain out.

What Else:

As they've done for several big games in the past, the Habs are opening the doors to the Bell Center to watch Game 7. Tickets went on sale at 10 dollars apiece with proceeds going to the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation.

The Habs and Bruins meet in Game 7 for a 9th time in their histories, the most in professional sports. Patrice Bergeron and Andrei Markov have both played in 3 of the 8 prior meetings, Carey Price and Tomas Plekanec have played a pair, as have Milan Lucic, David Krejci, Shawn Thornton and Zdeno Chara.

The Question Mark:

Who are your series MVPs picks and who will be the star on Wednesday?

Playoff Preview: Canadiens at Bruins (Round 2, Game 5)

HabsBruinsPlayoffs
Match Up:

The Canadiens return to Boston for Game 5 against the Bruins Saturday night with the series tied 2-2. The game is set to start at 7:00 and airs on CBC and RDS.

Carey Price and Tuukka Rask both played 60 minutes of shutout hockey Thursday night in Game 4, sending the match to overtime tied 0-0. Rookie Matt Fraser, playing in his first NHL playoff game, broke the deadlock less than 2 minutes into the first overtime to even up the series.

What to Watch:

Max Pacioretty has been held to just 1 goal and 3 points in these playoffs, with 1 assist in 4 games so far versus the Bruins. Linemate David Desharnais has the same stats heading after 8 playoff games, numbers the top line forwards can't be happy with. Rene Bourque has also struggled recently, he's minus 5 with no points in his last 3 games after starting these playoffs with 4 goals and an assist in his first 5 games.

As effective as the Bruins have been in shutting down Montreal's big threats, the Canadiens have been equally solid against Boston's top line. Milan Lucic has an empty net goal and a pair of assists against the Habs so far, Jarome Iginla has been held to just 1 goal and David Krejci has 1 assist so far in this series.

What's at Stake:

With the series tied 2 games apiece, the winner of Game 5 will push their opponent to the brink of elimination with a chance to close out the series Monday night in Montreal. The Canadiens have not yet trailed a series in these playoffs, winning 4 straight against the Lightning and taking the first and third games in Round 2.

Who's Out:

For the Habs, Alex Galchenyuk (knee) is still not ready to return, although he has started skating again.

The Bruins are still without Dennis Seidenberg (lower body), Chris Kelly (back) and Adam McQuaid (ankle).

What Else:

Thursday's game was the 18th of these playoffs that needed overtime to find a winner out of the 64 played as of Friday's action. The Habs and Bruins have gone to overtime 3 times each, twice in Round 2. The Blackhawks and Blues went to overtime 4 times in Round 1, as did the Wild and Avalanche. The Rangers have seen the least OTs of the remaining teams, going to the extra frame just once in 12 games so far.

The Question Mark:

What can Michel Therrien do to help spark Pacioretty an Desharnais in Game 5?

Pregame Preview: Canadiens at Bruins (Game #73)

Habs Vs Bruins
Match Up:

The Canadiens (39-26-7) are in Boston Monday night to face the Bruins (49-17-5) after disposing of another Original Six rival the game before. The game starts at 7:30 and can be seen on RDS and TSN.

This is the fourth and final match between the Habs and Bruins. The Habs have earned a pair of regulation victories already this season over the Bruins, but dropped their last match 4-1 at the Bell Centre. Thomas Vanek picked up his first point as a Hab in that game, while Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each had 2 points for the Bruins.

What to Watch:

Brian Gionta had a goal and an assist against the Leafs on Saturday, his sixth multi-point game of the season. Rene Bourque also had a goal and an assist against Toronto, he directed a season high 6 shots on goal after sitting out as a healthy scratch the previous five games.

The Bruins have won 12 straight and clinched a playoff spot in the process. Despite the fact that Boston is second overall in terms of goals per game, they don't have a single player amongst the top-20 point producers, although with 28 goals, Jarome Iginla is 16th in that department.

What's at Stake:

If the Canadiens have any hope left to catch the Bruins (they don't), then they need to win Monday's game. Boston is 18 points ahead of the Habs, and the Canadiens have just 10 games, or 20 possible points, remaining. A more likely target for the Habs would be the Tampa Bay Lightning, second in the Atlantic. Tampa has a game in hand and a 1-point lead over the Canadiens but the two teams will meet up once more this season.

Who's Out:

Lars Eller (lower body) left Saturday's game in the second period and did not return, he is listed as day-to-day. Josh Gorges (hand) and Brandon Prust (lower body) are on injured reserve.

The Bruins are missing defensemen Dennis Seidenberg (knee) and Adam McQuaid (groin).

What Else:

The Bruins have won 12 straight and picked up 25 of a possible 28 points since returning from the Olympic break. Boston's longest win streak is 14 games, a mark set over 80 years ago during the 1929-30 season. The 92-93 Pittsburgh Penguins hold the record for the longest winning streak, at 17 games, followed by the 81-82 Islanders at 15. Boston's 14-game streak is the third longest in league history.

The Question Mark:

We want to hear from you: What would it take to eliminate the Bruins in the Playoffs and is there an Eastern conference team that can do it?

Pens/Bruins Sub-Plots, Acquisition Of Lafleur, Who Will The Habs Draft?... And More

Good Morning Addicts!

Jarome Iginla of the Pittsburgh Penguins will face off against
the Boston Bruins tonight in the Eastern Conference
Quarter Finals.
Normally I like to concentrate on the Habs in this short piece before sharing headlines from various hockey sites, but considering the previous four Stanley Cup winners all kick off the conference finals today I figured I would focus my attention on one match up in particular.

While the series between the Kings and Blackhawks is guaranteed to be a great one, you can't help but look forward to the sub plots in the Bruins/Penguins match up. The two that stick out are obviously the return of Jaromir Jagr to Pittsburgh and Jarome Iginla facing off against a team that not only almost acquired him at the trade deadline, but for a while thought they had.

The Jagr story is getting a little old. When Jagr returned from playing in the KHL for three years in 2011-12, he chose to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers, the rival team of his former Pittsburgh Penguins. Since then he's signed as a free agent with the Dallas Stars before being traded to his current team, the Boston Bruins. So although he's facing off against his former team, it doesn't quite have the same impact it would have if he were still on the Flyers.

Jarome Iginla however, is the story I'm more interested in. At this year's trade deadline the Bruins were all but sure that Iginla was headed to Beantown. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli had made the necessary moves in the organization and moved all the pieces that needed to be moved in order for Iginla to don the black and gold. I can't be too sure what happened but Penguins GM Ray Shero managed to come out on top and Iginla now has 12 points in 11 playoff games as a Penguin. It should be noted that the Bruins were also high on Brendan Morrow at the deadline but lost out.... to the Penguins.

Habs And Hockey News

- Matt Drake over at Habs Eyes On The Prize writes about the genius of Sam Pollock  and how he managed to acquire the draft pick that was used to make Guy Lafleur a Canadien.

- Speaking of Lafleur, the Habs legend has been quite hard on the organization over the last few years but it seems that "the flower" is finally optimistic about the team's future.

- With the future now mentioned, here's a look at who may be available for the Habs when it's Trevor Timmins and co's turn to make their selection at the 2013 NHL entry draft.

Habs/Bruins, Gionta Injured, Overrated list, Awards and more

Scott Gomez - Boston Bruins v Montreal Canadiens
Morning puck fans.

So, Sports Illustrated's list of 15 overrated players really caused a stir, eh?

I guess that is what happens when you ask 161 NHL players to name the most overrated player in hockey. Peers reviewing peers has a certain weight to it.

But, for my money, a lot of these players were selected not because they are overrated, but rather because they are irritating to play against. Or perhaps because there is a certain jealousy attached to the hype and money some of them receive.

Even Scott Gomez, who unsurprisingly made the list, does not entirely deserve his place there. He is overpaid, no doubt. But his talent is no longer overestimated by those in the league or by the general masses.

Dion Phaneuf, who could be a Norris Trophy candidate, is physical and aggressive. Not sure he is overrated.

Vincent Lecavalier, owner of a Stanley Cup and World Cup championship, also made the list. While he is on the downward tail of his career, he can still be a game changer.

Alex Ovechkin is on the list. He may be slumping, but he remains one of the league's most dymamic talents. He is also one of the league's favorite marketing tools.

Jarome Ignla is probably the most ridiculous name on the list. He has over 500 career goals, two Olympic Gold Medals, two Rocket Richard trophies and will be a first-ballot hall of famer.

Smells like some jealousy to me.

Habs/Lightning post game, Iginla gets 500, Halak's return, Rumours and more

Afternoon pucks addicts!

Sorry for the lateness of the news but that's what happens when you're on the air at 9 AM every Sunday!

So the Habs won again last night and are now undefeated for 2012.

Yes!

Buoyed by the good vibrations, many Habs fans are now thinking the Canadiens can still make the playoffs. While anything is technically possible, I think the hole Montreal got themselves into over the first half of the season is just too deep.

In other news, Jaroslav Halak makes his long awaited return to the Bell Centre on Tuesday. The Blues are streaking right now and the matchup of Price versus Halak combined with the recent strong play by Lars Eller will make for great theater!

Oh and Jarome Iginla scored his 500th career goal last night. Good on you Jarome!

Brian Gionta Named Montreal's Captain: Ranking the NHL's "C's"

by Kamal Panesar

With the news leaking last week that Brian Gionta will become the 28th captain of the Montreal Canadiens, I thought it was a good time to take a look at and rank all 30 NHL captains.

Ranking the captains is no easy task, mind you, since all of them have some combination of leadership qualities, work ethic, and a never-quit mentality.

As such, deciding which one is better than another is like splitting hairs. The following list is a ranking of the 30 NHL captains based on my overall impression of them as captains.

I am sure that this ranking will spur debate, rage, happiness, and all sorts of emotions but keep in mind that the positioning of one person ahead or behind another is by no means meant as disrespect to any of these individuals.

Being an NHL captain takes a special kind of character, and I truly feel that all of these players demonstrate, in some way or another, a certain "je ne sais quoi."

Note: Five teams have not yet named team captains. In those instances, I have stated the person who I believe should become the captain. I have ranked those teams 30 through 26 for simplicity's sake and not because I feel that their potential captains are inferior.

All stats and info were compiled from ESPN.com and Wikipedia.org.
