So, Sports Illustrated's list of 15 overrated players really caused a stir, eh?
I guess that is what happens when you ask 161 NHL players to name the most overrated player in hockey. Peers reviewing peers has a certain weight to it.
But, for my money, a lot of these players were selected not because they are overrated, but rather because they are irritating to play against. Or perhaps because there is a certain jealousy attached to the hype and money some of them receive.
Even Scott Gomez, who unsurprisingly made the list, does not entirely deserve his place there. He is overpaid, no doubt. But his talent is no longer overestimated by those in the league or by the general masses.
Dion Phaneuf, who could be a Norris Trophy candidate, is physical and aggressive. Not sure he is overrated.
Vincent Lecavalier, owner of a Stanley Cup and World Cup championship, also made the list. While he is on the downward tail of his career, he can still be a game changer.
Alex Ovechkin is on the list. He may be slumping, but he remains one of the league's most dymamic talents. He is also one of the league's favorite marketing tools.
Jarome Ignla is probably the most ridiculous name on the list. He has over 500 career goals, two Olympic Gold Medals, two Rocket Richard trophies and will be a first-ballot hall of famer.
Smells like some jealousy to me.
