Good Morning Hockey World!

We are now into the second week of August and optimism in Montreal is becoming scarce.

With a possible - and at this point probable - lockout looming over the 2012-13 season and P.K. Subban still unsigned, there's a certain feeling of panic among Habs fans.

While the lack of a contract heading into a season is hardly new, the thought of having a shortened season, or god forbid no season at all, has everybody worried.

Whatever happened to the good old worry of can the Canadiens stay healthy?

Every team has questions heading into any season and if there is in fact a 2012-13 campaign, health will be key for the Canadiens moving forward.

Are you optimistic that health will be on the Habs side?

I know I keep saying this, but man is it ever a slow news day!

It seems like each day there is less and less to talk about. I guess that's why there are foolish rumours flying all over the place. In times of slow news the rumours mongers seem to come out in droves, monging their rumours as they do.

I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying the spectacular weather we've been having (in Montreal) and the summer in general.

What about you? What have you been doing to fight off the dog days?

It's another sparse NHL news day today. But given that we're into early August, I suppose that's not really surprising.

Nothing new on Subban's contract? Check.

Nothing new on the NHL CBA negotiations? Check.

I suppose one day soon something will happen on both or either front. But, until then, I guess we'll all just have to enjoy the nice weather!

-HabsAddict.com's Amos Legault takes a look at Alex Galchenyuk, and whether he will get a nine-game look at the NHL level.

-The good folks at Habsworld.net turn their fantasy focus to Habs center Tomas Plekanec.

-The Isles sign first-rounder, Griffin Reinhart.

-Alfie's back! The Sens captain has decided to participate in the upcoming season, his 17th. And good for him! He showed last year that he is still an eminently capable player on the ice, so why not sign on for at least one more season?

The Sens and the league will be better for having him in it.

-ESPN and Sportsnet both take looks at the current waiting game in the CBA negotiations.

Anyone else think a lockout, even a short one, is inevitable at this point?

-Lastly, Spector takes a look at what's new on the Shane Doan front. Is it me or does each summer seem to bring an unending waiting game for an ageing veteran?

Morning puck addicts!

Not a lot happening in the NHL this morning. But, alas, these dogs days are killing us all (softly?)

If you're a CBA enthusiast, you'll love Larry Brooks' piece in the New York Post. He "somehow" obtained an internal memo from NHLPA head, Donald Fehr.

The memo details how the league's proposal breaks down in dollars and cents. Interesting stuff, to be sure, and certainly not a deal the PA will be accepting any time soon.

Now, however, comes the fun part as the PA is sure to table a counter proposal soon enough.

I can't wait to see what they fire back with, because whatever it is, it will largely indicate whether we are looking at a long, drawn-out negotiation or not.

My gut tells me that we will be looking at a long process. Moreover, I think we'll lose part of the upcoming season as a result.

Quick note: There's no way the Preds can match. He is gonzo.

-The Pens hired a new team physician. I wonder if this has anything to do with the way Sidney Crosby's concussion was handled.

Happy Saturday puck addicts!

Lots of news floating around the NHL this morning, mostly of the minor signing variety. Well, except, of course, for the Blues inking T.J. Oshie to a mega-deal!

Mmm, perhaps 'mega' is not the right word since the five-year term at an average of $4.175, is probably pretty reasonable for the 25 year old Oshie.

On the Habs front, there is still no deal for defenseman P.K. Subban. This, of course, means that there are a slew of rumours out there seeing Subban moved out of town. Personally, I don't see any way that Subban will be traded.

He'll be signed soon enough as GM Marc Bergevin clearly identified Subban (and Carey Price) as key cogs going forward. The latest rumour has Subban and Tomas Plekanec being moved to Chicago for Patrick Kane and Niklas Hjalmarsson.

Umm, unlikely methinks, if slightly plausible.

-HabsAddict.com's own Sean Lloyd continues his look at the current Habs roster, this time turning his gaze towards Tomas Plekanec.

-Speaking of Subban, according to RDS, Subban's agent, Don Meehan, will meet with Bergevin next week. Who knows what will come of that meeting but, if I were a betting man, I'd say a deal will be done over the next few weeks.

-The Oil have avoided arbitration with star young gun, Sam Gagner. The team inked him to a 1-year deal.

-Continuing with the arbitration theme, the Leafs have signed Nikolai Kulemin, avoiding arbitration. Yes, the Cup is theirs!

-Lots of news on the Hawks front. In good news, previously concussed star, Marian Hossa says he's recovering on schedule, having resumed high-intensity training.

In bad news (more bad news?), star forward Patrick Kane is being accused of being an alcoholic because of his partying antics for Cinco de Mayo.

Really? An alcholic? He's 23 and is a millionaire. I think a little (a lot?) of the raising of the wrist is to be expected. Don't you?

-As previously stated, the Blues inked Oshie to a good deal for both sides.

-Lastly, Spector takes you around the horn, rounding up the latest NHL rumours.

Morning puck addicts!

Game 5 is upon us! Well, almost. In a few short hours the Los Angeles Kings will get another shot at glory. And by glory I mean the Stanley Cup.

With the series shifting back to New Jersey tonight and the Kings holding a 3-1 lead in the series, you get the feeling that perhaps the Devils aren't done yet.

Then again, the Kings have gone up 3-0 in all four series' they've played so far...and two of those series went five games. So clearly, they have been in this position before.

My mind tells me the Kings will wrap it up tonight but, for some reason, I feel that the Devils could take the game tonight.

Bah, so much for prognostication!

So the Stanley Cup playoffs have started, and your Montreal Canadiens are not a part of them.

Does that make you sad? Or, after the season of misery that was, are you just happy to have a reprieve, free to watch hockey without really caring who wins or loses?

There was lots of great hockey last night, as there is sure to be for the next few months. But the big story, on the Habs front, was Nick Kypreos saying the Habs are talking with Luc Robitaille about the GM vacancy.

The move is a little surprising but, at the very least, it shows that no stone is being left unturned.

Still, it is sounding like Marc Bergevin is the front runner right now. This should be an interested few months leading up to the draft for the Habs!

Morning puck addicts!

50 is a pretty big number, no? Like, I mean if someone gave you 50 jelly beans, you'd think you had a lot of then.

Well what about losses in hockey? 50 sounds like an abusive amount of losses for a team to have, doesn't it?

Unfortunately for a Habs team whose season can't end soon enough, they lost their 50th of the year to the Caps last night.

50 losses. 50. Wow. That is just staggering. 35 in regulation and 15 in overtime or the shootout. I guess on one hand, you can say that they kept things close in many of those games.

But, at this point, it doesn't really matter.

What does matter is that with three games left to play and the Leafs winning last night, Montreal is looking like a lock for a top-three pick this June!

Morning puck addicts!

Another day, another Habs loss. But this time, with the Habs dropping a 4-1 decision to the Flyers, the game had a little more meaning.

For the Flyers, they officially clinched a playoffs spot. For Montreal? They are now officially eliminated.

As HIO's Mike Boone points out, the Habs now have 34 regulation losses this season. Thrown in 13 OT/SO losses, and that total swells to 47.

Yowza! Sounds like it's time for the mercy rule!

This season can't end soon enough for Habs fans. And, they can take solace in the the fact that the Habs will certainly be drafting high. Top-Five for sure with a shot at Top-Three.

That's a pretty good consolation and a well needed shot in the arm for what should be an offseason rebuild.

Morning Habs addicts!

Hope you're enjoying your weekend more than the Habs are. Yes, they've been playing better of late, much to the chagrin of fans wanting them to draft high. But they still tend more to the losing side than anything else.

I know fans are probably blaming their favorite ref since Kerry Fraser (Chris Lee) this morning, but, as Coach Cunneyworth pointed out, the Habs were architects of their own demise against the Sens.

The good news? At least Boston is no longer is first overall in the Northeast!

Morning puck addicts!

A quiet night on the Habs front yesterday. That is except for the Habs recalling Louis Leblanc from the Hamilton Bulldogs, again.

This kid is really racking up the Air Miles!

That said, this time things are a little different as Habs center, David Desharnais, is out of the lineup indefinitely with some kind of lower body injury.

With no word yet on the extent of DD's injury, nor the length of his absence from the lineup, this could be a great opportunity for Leblanc. The Habs are going nowhere fast and I believe they should be playing the young players as much as possible.

Will we get to see Leblanc tryout at center? We'll find out as early as tonight when the Habs take on the Canucks in Vancouver.

So with the 10 PM EST start for tonight's game, the real question is, will you be staying up to watch?

Morning puck addicts!

It seems that the balmy, spring-like weather that Montreal has been basked in, has disappeared this morning. In it's place, a frosty minus-13, more befitting of the time of the year.

But the cold isn't dampening Hab fans' spirits, as they await tonight's Habs/Leafs tilt in Toronto. The Habs have an opportunity to win four-straight games tonight, for the first time this season.

The Leafs are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, with 62 points to the Habs 53. It should be noted that despite being on a three-game winning streak the Habs have failed to make up much ground, sitting in 12th overall.

And this is the problem with getting into an early season hole in today's NHL.

Reality aside, Montreal has their fans hoping that they can squeak in. And squeak in they can.

For Me, I see them either falling into a lottery pick position or winning just enough games to get fans excited, but ultimately fall short at season's end.

Ya, I know, not too optimistic but such is the reality the Habs find themselves in.

Morning puck addicts!

So did you enjoy the All-Star skills competition yesterday? I did. Moreover, how freakin' entertaining was Carey Price all mic'd up?

It's funny, because most in Montreal that cover the Canadiens are pretty familiar with his sense of humour. But, yesterday, the rest of the league's fans got a taste of Price's hilarity during the breakaway challenge.

After the contest, Price was trending in all sorts of weird places like, umm, Boston.

Comments like "Wow, I really like Price now" were abound.

And, to me, that is the best part about the ASG. Fans get to see the players in a light they normally don't. Relaxed, goofing around, and just being themselves.

I like it!

And on that note, I'm out of here. Off to Barcelona for 10 days. See you all on the flip-side!

Afternoon pucks addicts!

Sorry for the lateness of the news but that's what happens when you're on the air at 9 AM every Sunday!

So the Habs won again last night and are now undefeated for 2012.

Yes!

Buoyed by the good vibrations, many Habs fans are now thinking the Canadiens can still make the playoffs. While anything is technically possible, I think the hole Montreal got themselves into over the first half of the season is just too deep.

In other news, Jaroslav Halak makes his long awaited return to the Bell Centre on Tuesday. The Blues are streaking right now and the matchup of Price versus Halak combined with the recent strong play by Lars Eller will make for great theater!

Oh and Jarome Iginla scored his 500th career goal last night. Good on you Jarome!

Good Saturday morning puck addicts!

Lots of hockey news this morn. The big bombshell that came out yesterday was that the NHLPA has rejected the NHL's proposed realignment of the divisions (and new playoff format).

The league is saying the rejection is unreasonable and without reason while the PA is saying that they asked the league for more info, which they did not provide.

Wow. If this is the beginning of negotiations between the PA and the league, we could be in for a lockout next year afterall. Gary Bettman and PA head, Donald Fehr, are scheduled to meet in Ottawa, at the All Star game, to start discussing the CBA. Man would it be something to be a fly on that wall of that meeting!

On the Habs front, Montreal plays the Lightning tonight in a game that will mark the halfway point of the season. They are coming off a 7-3 drubbing of the Jets, marked by a four goal, five point night by Lars Eller.

The Canadiens playoff hopes are only mathematically alive, but still, they would surely like to get on a bit of a roll here.

We'll see, starting tonight, how that plays out.

Morning Habs addicts!

It's all quiet on the Habs front with the Canadiens on a break until Wednesday. Montreal will be playing their first home game of the year, against the Jets, and will be hoping yet again to get back in the win column.

The big news, however, was that GM Pierre Gauthier broke from protocol and signed Josh Gorges to a six-year extension. Gauthier, known for refusing to negotiate contracts during the season, got this one right.
