Messier wins grievance, Will the Isles move to Brooklyn, Doan update and more

Morning puck addicts!

I know I keep saying this, but man is it ever a slow news day!

It seems like each day there is less and less to talk about. I guess that's why there are foolish rumours flying all over the place. In times of slow news the rumours mongers seem to come out in droves, monging their rumours as they do.

I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying the spectacular weather we've been having (in Montreal) and the summer in general.

What about you? What have you been doing to fight off the dog days?

Hockey News

-Mark Messier won a grievance against the Vancouver Canucks and got a nice pay day out of it!

-Habsworld.net's fantasy focus turns to David Desharnais.

-Are the Islanders moving to Brooklyn?

-No one knows where Shane Doan will land but it now seems that the Sharks are off his list.

Alex Galchenyuk Will Get Nine-Game Look With Montreal Canadiens

Alex Galchenyuk's first moments as a Canadien
Greetings addicts!

As October takes its sweet time in arriving, there's more than enough question marks surrounding the Montreal Canadiens.

Most interesting to me is Alex Galchenyuk and what his immediate future holds. After all, when was the last time we had such a highly touted prospect in the system?

Let's just say I wasn't a Habs fan yet.

The "Nine-Game Look"

It's too early to tell if he will be the first draft choice in decades to make the jump to the Habs right away—Petr Svoboda being the last to do so in 1984—but my money is on Galchenyuk getting the nine-game look.

What is the nine-game look? Well, the NHL has a rule that a rookie player can play nine games in the league without it taking a full year off of their rookie status.

In other words, they can still be sent down after those nine games, come up the following year and still be a rookie.

When it comes to the Habs, it could be argued that their second and third lines would do well to play with familiarity players, or that nine games with the big club could negatively effect Gally's confidence.

But these shouldn't be things to worry about.

For the sake of Michel Therrien's head, I hope a good start to the season is in store, but fans will need to exercise some serious patients this time around.

In regards to confidence, well, just look at Mark Scheifele's rookie preseason with the Winnipeg Jets last year. He led the team in scoring with four goals and eight points in five games. Only Mike Ribeiro had more preseason points in the NHL. The Jets then gave him the nine games, where he showed to be lacking a bit of strength.

He was excellent against rookie-laden teams, but didn't learn much about himself until those nine games. Overall, though, it was a wholly positive experience for Scheifele.

Getting Back On His Knee

Unless he falls flat on his face, Gally should start the regular season a Hab for the same reasons Scheifele did. To find out where he's rusty and to really feel where his surgically repaired knee is at.

As former teammate Nail Yakupov will likely join the Edmonton Oilers from the get-go, there is a serious confidence boost to be had for Gally with a full year as the Sarnia Sting's top player—if not the OHL's top player.

That being said, one simply cannot rule out the possibility of him sticking with the team for good after those nine games.

Galchenyuk is a kid with an astonishingly complete game for his age. The only possible thing that could be called a weakness is his physical game, which isn't an essential asset if you do everything else well.

It is my opinion that if this...

...didn't happen, I may not even be writing about him right now.

Someone in Edmonton would be.

What do you guys think about the nine-game look? Are you nervous about the right thing being done to secure his full potential? If Gally maintains as complete a game as he's shown in the past and it translates to the NHL, should he still return to Sarnia for a season? Do you feel he needs to be more physical to be a No. 1 pivot in the NHL?

Let's hear it!

Plekanec, Doan update, CBA stall, Alfredson back, Isles and more

Morning puck addicts!

It's another sparse NHL news day today. But given that we're into early August, I suppose that's not really surprising.

Nothing new on Subban's contract? Check.

Nothing new on the NHL CBA negotiations? Check.

I suppose one day soon something will happen on both or either front. But, until then, I guess we'll all just have to enjoy the nice weather!

Hockey News

-HabsAddict.com's Amos Legault takes a look at Alex Galchenyuk, and whether he will get a nine-game look at the NHL level.

-The good folks at Habsworld.net turn their fantasy focus to Habs center Tomas Plekanec.

-The Isles sign first-rounder, Griffin Reinhart.

-Alfie's back! The Sens captain has decided to participate in the upcoming season, his 17th. And good for him! He showed last year that he is still an eminently capable player on the ice, so why not sign on for at least one more season?

The Sens and the league will be better for having him in it.

-ESPN and Sportsnet both take looks at the current waiting game in the CBA negotiations.

Anyone else think a lockout, even a short one, is inevitable at this point?

-Lastly, Spector takes a look at what's new on the Shane Doan front. Is it me or does each summer seem to bring an unending waiting game for an ageing veteran?

I'm not sure what that says about the league, if anything. What about you?

Subban's contract, Laviolette extension, Leafs, Wings, Bruins and more

Morning puck addicts!

I'll make this entry brief as I'm running out the door.

Nothing but tumbleweed this morning on the Habs front, as the reverberations of P.K. Subban turning down a two-year offer are still in the air.

Subban aside, there were a bunch of minor signings around the league yesterday.

For my part, and on a non-hockey front, I went to St. Sauveur last night to check out the Momix dance group. Wow, wow, wow. Stunning and VERY trippy. If you're into that kinda thing, I highly recommend checking them out.

Here's a Youtube vid summing up the show I saw:

Ok, on to hockey...!

Hockey News

-A flurry of first-round pick signings as the Leafs have signed first round pick, Morgan Reilly, while the Flyers signed Tanner Pederson.

The Canucks also signed a second-round pick, Alexandre Mallet.

-The Red Wings added four Russians to their Winter Classic squad.

-The Flyers also gave a nice contract extenstion to the head coach, Peter Laviolette. And why not? He got the team within two wins of the Stanley Cup championship.

-The Bruins, and more specifically Tuukka Rask, prepare for life without Tim Thomas.

-Highly touted prospect, Nathan MacKinnon, gets ready to show his stuff at the Ivan Hlinka Tourney.

-THN's Ken Campbell does a little NHL roundup looking at the return of Rick DiPietro as well as Subban's contract.

-And lastly, Spector's does his usual rumour roundup, this time focusing on the Leafs and Flyers.

Yakupov for Subban, Rask Feels Ready, Reihart, Maillet and More

Nail Yakupov - 2012 NHL Entry Draft - Round One
Good AM!

Richard Cloutier, the excellent Edmonton Oilers blogger at HockeyBuzz, came up with a rather interesting idea yesterday.

Trading P.K Subban for Nail Yakupov.

While I doubt this would ever happen, especially in the form of a one-for-one deal, his logic makes sense.

The Oilers have a wealth of top-six talent but, in spite of the acquisition of Justin Schultz, still need help on the back end. Conversely, the Montreal Canadiens could profit greatly from reuniting Nail with his Sarnia Sting teammate Alex Galchenyuk, whom the Habs drafted third overall in June.

Would you make this kind of a deal?

Habs and Hockey News

- Tuuka Rask says he feels ready to take on the starting netminder role following the departure of Tim Thomas. His numbers say he is ready as well. Over the last three years, his lowest save percentage was .918. Not too shabby. And you can bet the Boston Bruins will benefit from not having to deal with Tim Thomas' misguided political outbursts.

- Sportsnet counts down ten events that changed the game of hockey.

- The Vancouver Canucks have signed Alexandre Maillet to an entry-level contract. The 20-year old was a second round pick in this year's draft.

- The New York Islanders have inked Griffin Reinhart — their 2012 first round pick — to a deal has well.

- Viacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Sergei Fedorov will join the festivities at the Winter Classic in Michigan.

P.K Subban Negotiations, Fantasy Projections, Alfredsson and More

Good AM Habs fans!

P.K. Subban - Montreal Canadiens v Ottawa Senators
It seems that negotiations between the Montreal Canadiens and P.K Subban have stalled.

According to reports, Subban rejected a two-year, $5.5 million offer from the Habs.

Naturally, he is looking for a longer term deal.

However, the danger for the organization is that a longer deal — say four years — leads the blueliner straight to Unrestricted Free Agency, where he can then be lost for nothing.

A shorter contract allows the team a few years to evaluate the player and then, if warranted, negotiate a longer deal while his free agency rights are still restricted.

Then again, by letting the current situation persist, the team finds itself facing the very real risk of an offer sheet.

Habs and Hockey News

- At the beginning of 2011-12, the crew at HabsWorld — including yours truly — made some fantasy predictions for the more prominent names on the Canadiens roster. Now, we take a look back at the good, bad and ugly of those projections.

- Stu Hackel contemplates Daniel Alfredsson's decision to return.

- Over at The Hockey News, Ryan Kennedy makes the case that the Northwest division is the league's worst. No argument from me on that.

- Vancouver Cancuks' forward Manny Malhotra will march in Vancouver's gay pride parade later this month. Props.

P.K Subban's Contract, Most Improved Team, Laviolette, CBA and More

Eric Staal - Montreal Canadiens v Carolina Hurricanes
Good AM Hab fans!

Usually, even square in the middle of summer, it's pretty easy to fill this brief segment and corresponding links.

But, today, today is a slow day.

So, let me ask you a question: which team do you feel has most improved this off-season?

Personally, I would have to give a very strong nod to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Habs and Hockey News

- Don't forget to check out Sean Lloyd's analysis of the Montreal Canadiens' top forwards.
