Well, don't we have an exciting battle on our hands tonight! When the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens faceoff in Edmonton, they will be playing for important positioning in the standings.
Should the Habs lose the game, they would drop to 29th overall in the league.
On another note, am I the only person who thinks its wrong that the Oilers could conceivably get the first overall pick for the third year in a row?
I am all for helping out a struggling team via the draft, but management should not be rewarded for utter incompetence either.
With an offence led by Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, Ryan Smyth, Ales Hemsky and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, your team should be able to at least play .500 hockey.
But, as an organization, if you cannot take those pieces and build a decent team, you should not be rewarded with another top pick after two years of picking first overall.

Looks like this kid Holland could be a steal as a throw in on the Cammalleri trade. He is 6th in the WHL in scoring and 1st in assists. Can never have enough quality prospects.
@Hockeyhype
Holland's stats should be tempered by the fact that he is an overage in the WHL, but they are still impressive numbers. Brendan Gallagher is also amongst the WHL scoring leaders, ranking 19th with 75 points in only 50 games.
Although Holland may not morph into an NHLer, if nothing else he will add scoring depth to a Hamilton team that could sorely use it.
They've had injuries and they need d-men and goaltending. How long did it take the Pens to get to where they are with the high picks they got.
Ya....Oilers suck, but it could b worse...we could be mtl...no draft picks...no talent...no future. Truly pity the pathetic hand. GO OILERS
@Anon
Of course, the Pens had four consecutive top-2 picks. That tends to help.
But my point is that, when stuck in a state of perpetual mediocrity, perhaps the league should not continually reward that with top-five picks
@Corey
Glad to strike a chord. I am not saying the Oilers are devoid of future. They are full of promise. But, as I mention above, I question the logic of rewarding Edmonton's managerial ineptitude with a top pick yet again.
As for MTL having no draft picks or no future, I am sure P.K Subban, Jarred Tinordi, Brendan Gallagher, Nathan Beaulieu, Louis Leblanc, Max Pacioretty, Lars Eller, Carey Price and whatever top-3 pick the team gets this year will disagree.

You would also get numerous pro and amateur scouts to disagree as well. If the Habs decided to trade any of the above players there would be plenty of interest and the Oilers might be near the top of the list when it comes to the d-men and Price.
Habs have a deep prospect pool that will get much deeper this year. They are just missing a high end scoring prospect with size or 2 and some gritty 4th line prospects.
