VIDEO: Shea Weber Slams Henrik Zetterberg's Head Into Glass, No Suspension

OK, let's start this off really simply by showing the video clip of the offending incident:



I don't know about you, but if that is not a suspendable offense, I don't know what is.

Not only did Weber throw a blatant punch at the back of Zetterberg's head, but he then grabbed him by the helmet and rammed his head into the glass.

Intent to injure? Deliberate action? Malicious and dangerous act?

Clearly the three wing circus running NHL discipline has slipped full-bore into the same groove the previous regime was in.

A) It's the playoffs, so unless it is a third or fourth line guy or unless someone is murdered on the ice, there will be no suspension.
B) This is Shea Weber, a superstar player.
C) Zetterberg showed no real ill effects after the assault.

As such, Brendan Shannahan deemed a $2500 fine appropriate. So ridiculously audible.

Sad, sad, sad.

That is what the NHL and it's disciplinary policies are. For a guy who started his reign as head of discipline on a tear, Shannahan sure has become a meek, limp-wristed, gun-slinger this year. Content to steer clear of trouble and take the safe route rather than make a decision that might upset some people, in the name of safety and for the good of the game.

Head slammed into glass. Well, good thing there isn't a concussion epidemic or anything like that going on!

Zetterberg is soft, it took at least 10 of those on the turnbuckle to knockout Ric Flair.

But in all seriousness, soft or not, it doesn't get much more blatant than Weber's act on Zetterberg. I'm not saying he should have gotten five games, but one or two would have been appropriate, methinks...

I agree, that was absolutely brutal and unnecessary.

It was a hockey play right? The precedent was set with the Chara hit. If you grab someone by the head and ram him into a solid, immovable object and you're wearing skates... Screw the NHL.. last night was pathetic.

I'm shocked Weber did not get a game. Imagine typically goonier teams like NYR, Boston or Philadelphia taking note of that.

Now it is clear what liberties they can take as well. Brutal.

They are simply not going to suspend a star player during the playoffs unless he commits murder.
That is the way it has always been and always will be.
Don't forget this is first and foremost a business not a sport. Too much at stake for Nashville to lose their best player in the most important series in their history.
