Pierre Boivin will turn over the reins to Geoff Molson on June 30, 2011
MONTREAL, July 5, 2010 – The Board of Directors of CH Group, the holding company that owns the Club de hockey Canadien, the Bell Centre and evenko, announced today that it has adopted a succession plan to ensure a smooth transition in its corporate leadership at the conclusion of the next fiscal year, on June 30, 2011. This is in accordance with Mr. Geoff Molson’s decision to assume the position of President and Chief Executive Officer.
The plan calls for Mr. Pierre Boivin to stay on as President and CEO of Club de hockey Canadien and evenko until the end of the transition period. He will work closely with Mr. Molson, who will assume Mr. Boivin’s duties on June 30, 2011.
Mr. Geoff Molson, Chairman of CH Group, underscored the importance of Pierre Boivin’s contribution to the organization’s success.
“From the moment he was hired by Molson Inc., eleven years ago, Pierre undertook to transform the organization by modernizing it, developing fan passion and loyalty, particularly through the team’s centennial celebrations, and creating value in all of our sports and entertainment operations,” Geoff Molson stated. “We have been able to count on his loyalty and unfailing support since we purchased the team and both the Board of Directors and I greatly appreciate being able to rely on his expertise, experience and cooperation during the coming year to ensure that our plan is executed successfully. To this end, we have invited Pierre, and he has accepted, to join the board of directors of CH Group.”
For his part, Mr. Boivin underlined his attachment to the organization. “Ever since I took on the management of the Montreal Canadiens and related businesses, I have had the privilege of working with owners and employees who were passionate about hockey and entertainment, committed to the team’s success, respectful of our fans and the entire community, and determined to create a unique experience for our patrons at the Bell Centre. The confidence and unflagging support of our owners combined with the skills and commitment of all of our employees allowed our organization to achieve ever more ambitious goals.”

The wording in this press release is a little odd. Sounds to me like he's staying in a bigger role than what we might anticipate, and habs IO is saying that he'll still be president of the ''Canadiens'' whereas he's stepping down as president of ''Group CH'', the holding company.
Seems to me like they're just trying to get him away from the cameras, like they did with Gainey in February.
I still think more Geoff and less Boivin is a good thing. But yeah, Prax, the wording is a bit twitchy for sure.
Hey Prax and Tyg....this thing sounds like it was written by lawyers!
I think, from what I understand, Boivin will basically be moved to the Board of Directors and won't be acting president (a role which Molson will take over).
I think this is the slow process of Geoff Molson getting more involved with the team. If he's the pres, then he gets to hire/fire the GM, and by extension, the coach.
Sounds to me like he is preparing for the inevitable.
First site I've come across telling the truth about the two incompetants Gauthier and his asistant Gainey who he used to assist - yeah right! Boivin who went to school with the near 30 year NHL failure Gauthier hires him as Assistant GM just after Gainey is hired as GM by new owner Gillett because his business partner Hicks of Dallas Stars recommends him. Now Gauthier's Ottawa employees Timmins and Martin are also here. As is Gainey who never ledt! He and Gauthier have been co-GMs since the beginning and merely changed seats in that phony press conference. Molson recognizes it's a clique of old out of touch men, Molson is now the President going around with the olde one he just gave a year's notice to. I sincerely hope some other team puts in an offer for Price who has won 20 games and lost 48 games since January 1, 2009 to the end of the 2009-2010 season including playoffs - because Molson then will say enuff is enuff - why didn't you sign one goalie or the other BEFORE you traded one away? The wrong goalie at that. First honest Habs blog!
@prax
HIO bans anyone who says anything negative about boivin, gauthier and the most perfect person in the world the good checker bob gainey who averaged 16 goals a season for his career in that high scoring era.
Hey there Anon, and thanks for your comments!
Great comments and you're 100% right! There is an old boys club running the Habs right now, and I agree that Molson is taking the first steps to break it up.
Once he is in charge, PG and JM will be the next ones out the door and I believe that will help the Habs, as an organization, tremendously!
K.
