Don Cherry Comments on the Zdeno Chara, Max Pacioretty Hit

HNIC - Coach's Corner - Mar 12th 2011 (HD)

In case you haven't seen it yet, here is Don Cherry, on Hockey Night in Canada, talking about the Zdeno Chara hit on Max Pacioretty, the stanchions, boards and glass in Montreal and the non-suspension for Chara.

So what do you think about what Don had to say? Agree? Disagree? Or is he just a facist?

I won't even dignify Cherry's commentary anymore. I've said my piece, and the fact that he couldn't be bothered to learn Pacioretty's name under such dire circumstances should tell *anyone* all they need to know about this 'legend'.

Hey Kyle! You know I have to agree with you there. This guy has really gone off the rails in the last 10 years or so and seems to get worse and worse.

I have no problem with his comments because he is entitled to him opinion, but I have to agree that the "...what's his name?" part was bothersome at the least!

Not sure how long CBC plans on riding this guy's dead carcass but seemingly, there is no end in sight!

Every now and then, someone posts an excerpt of Coach's Corner, and I am reminded why I never watch hockey on CBC... and it is not just to preserve my retinas from damage caused by Cherry's wardrobe. It's not even because I get angry that you and I are paying this lunatic's salary...

While there is merit to his 45-degree stanchion/turnbuckle, and the fact that the Bell Centre's boards and padding at the stanchion are probably abong the worst in the league, the rest of his point of view completely ignores the facts.

Guns don't kill people, folks; people holding them do. Stanchions don't injure players, the guy pushing one's head into them does. And hearing Cherry's rant about "a guy who never tries to hurt anyone" is the biggest load of BS they will try to feed us. Chara can be as dirty as the next guy, and the excuse of his towering 6'9" is really getting old.

And can someone please force Cherry to retire? His senility is reaching new levels; if you can't remember the name of the player your whole piece is about, maybe it's time to go...

Thanks for this article Kamal!

I find it interesting that Cherry focuses on the stanchion (and yes they do need to be addressed), but he makes it seem like Montreal is the only building with a problem.

Interesting he did not use the Boston or Leafs arena as an example. But I guess they are just as good/bad as the ones in Montreal.

Cherry's bias is so blatant, that he has lost all credibility.

@chirs: Thanks for your comment and well said my friend! I think someone explained it brilliantly on Twitter today they said "...when old people lose their minds you put them in a home not on national TV."

@anon: Cherry's bias has been shining through fro a decade now and he seems to show is true colours more and more frequently. The worst is when he is talking about the Leafs and he was "we".

If you are sick of Cherry and his anti-montreal rants you can email yr concerns to: hnic@cbc.ca and also make yr complaints known to www.cbc.ca/contact. Time for Cherry to retire.

Just watched Cherry's stupid anti-Montreal rant on coaches corner, Big surprise on his views isn't it. He and other old NHL boys simply DO NOT get it. They are completely clueless. Anyone who doesn't think that Chara's use of his forearm to guide Pacioretty's head into the stanchion wasn't conscious and reckless is delusional. Chara chose to reach up with his left forearm and push Pacioretty's upper body toward the stanchion. It really doesn't matter if he realized the stanchion was there; he has to be held responsible for results of his actions. The NHL brass must think the general public is stupid.
There is a very fine line between clean checking a player and committing criminal physical assault. The NHL has made itself look like a complete joke. Now even the sponsors are condemning the hit and the lack of consequences. The NHL could have avoided this problem perception with a multi-game suspension of Chara. Instead it chose to ignore it. What a bloody shame that instead of looking to improve the image of hockey, Bettman uses this incident as an opportunity to create a confrontation with Air Canada and its interest in sponsorship. I am utterly dumfounded by this level of incompetence.
Fans should contact the other NHL sponsors like Visa, Canadian Tire, Reebok, Mcdonalds, Honda and Pepsi and make their feelings known about this. Wonder if Bettman would confront these sponsors too if they pressure him to do the right thing and suspend Chara. The NHL has set a bad another precedent: they are escalating the bar for hits not deemed suspendable, and thus the dangerous hits will get worse and worse.Hockey is a contact sport but unless some of this gets cleaned up, eventually someone will be killed.

@anon (#2): Good stuff buddy. Glad to see that info and yep, if people are unhappy they SHOULD write the CBC!

As for Cherry, well, he's be out of touch for about a decade now and the CBC isn't making any plans to get rid of him. So barring a MAJOR outcry to get rid of him, I doubt they'll put him out to pasture.

@anon (#3): You make some excellent points there my friend!

The bottom line, for me, is that since intent was neither called on the ice (in the form of an attempt to injure penalty) and since it is impossible to prove, you have to take that out of the equation.

So what are the facts? The facts are the Chara serious injured another player while performing an illegal act (interference, a late hit) and for that, he should be punished.

It's really as simple as that.

but the NHL's decision shows that you can make an illegal play, seriously injure another player, but have no consequences because you didn't mean to hurt him.

That attitude, imo, is what will eventually lead to a player being killed on the ice.

What his name? Oh yea Cherry, this guy Cherry is an idiot, always been, always will be.When somebody hold your head onto stanchion you know he will have serious injury, not just an headache you F"""NG MORON.According to you 20 or nothing than he should have been giving 20.The other MORON, Mike Murphy should get a baseball bat in the back of the head and be put to pasture like some of this young hockey players will end up. That Murphy should be fired with with the other two MORONS Gary Bettman and the other what's his name.

Don, is it because he(what's his name)is an young American hockey player that you feel this way? What would your feeling be if he(what's his name) was an English speaking Toronto Canadian hockey player?

@Anon (the one talking about Cherry and Murphy two posts up!): Cherry is Cherry...he is a known commodity, imo...

He has been getting worse and worse and more and more slanted in his arguments for a decade!

As for Mike Murphy, well him and the entire braintrust at the top of the NHL (Bettman/Campbell et. al) need to go, imo. These guys are holding on to the old days of the game and for some reason fight change tooth and nail.

It is time for some new leadership before someone ends up dead on the ice.

@Anon (the last one): Excellent point! And, like I said above, Cherry is Cherry. We all know his shtick.

It is old and tired, like him...his Toronto, Boston and anything Canadian bias is SO over the top, but yet CBC keeps him on because I guess he's good for ratings!

where were all you folks when Pacioretty ran eaton from behind, ran lundqvist, knocked a tampa player through the open gate at the montreal bench, and slew-footed mcquauid. I don't mind if someone is a non-combatant, but when somebody is an antagonist and a cheap shot artist, then answers the bell by turtling, he,s cruising for a bruising. Hopefully, everybody learned a lesson fro this including pacioretty.
