Two months into the 2011-12 season, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the top-10 most expensive defensive brigades in the NHL and where they rank overall.
I’ll use the top seven defensemen of each team as a reference and will take the financial numbers from CapGeek.com.

As you can see, there is no guarantee of success even if you spend a lot of money on your defensive unit. In fact, amongst the biggest blueline spenders, only the Chicago Blackhawks lead their division.

Really interesting to see that being a big spender at such an important position is no guarantee of success.
Perhaps the Habs will have to spend a bit more though, especially with Markov's absence now looking to extend another 4-6 weeks (as opposed to the 3 weeks previously reported)
