The Montreal Canadiens lost again last night. That's not really anything too surprising given their play of late.
But what makes this win more painful was the 4-2 lead the Habs held to start the third period. And this despite being outshot 22-18 through two periods.
Ouch.
But the Pens turned it on in the third as the Habs now patented third period collapse reared it's ugly head.
I guess the coach really doesn't know what to do when he's putting Scott Gomez, who hasn't scored in almost a year, out there in the shootout. Montreal picks up one point in the shootout loss but, with 43, sits three points out of last in the East.
But at least they scored a powerplay goal yesterday!

It's easy to rip the Gomez in a shootout choice, but what if he'd scored? Think of the implications? I have always supported Gomez, he's a standup guy (only one who approached Chara in that fateful game last year) and great with the young guys in the room and on the bench. Yes he's paid waaaaaay too much, but his role in this lineup is more important now than ever before!
As the cameraman showed Cunneyworth (shakily) filling out his shootout card, I was yelling at the tv, "Put Gomez out there! He's due!" He didn't score, but no one else did either.
Why did they lose this game? Horrible passive coaching in the third period (sound familiar?) and two extremely soft goals from Budaj. (1st and 4th)

I don't agree with the Gomez choice. If you were the coach and were playing the percentages, there is no way that Gomez should be in the shootout. As for Budaj, I though he had a good game. Malkin is a pure sniper and he is on fire and is a beast to stop. He has a give and go with Neal and when the pass came back to Malkin, we all knew it would be a labeled one timer but Gill was late in reading the play and left Malkin opened at the left boards and he ripped it into the net. I the habs offensive did it job but the defense lapses and mistakes (ie Subban blind pass on the pp)are killing the habs night in and night out. You would think that Subban will learn from these mistakes but I have to second guest that now. From my perspective, the need to acquire that #1 D (like a Weber)to stablize the D. If the Habs can't get a #1 then I would at least give the young guys like, Diaz, Emelin, and Weber lots of playing time to develop int NHL defensement.
