Habs combine, Canucks draft report, Gretzky, Kings celebrate, Rumours and more

It's pretty easy to tell that the hockey season is over, at least on the ice, because all of the talk has shifted to the upcoming draft.

There are still a bunch of post-mortem articles, as you'll see below, but the real story yesterday, at least for Habs fans, was the mini-combine.

Montreal had 43 prospects in town for physical testing, many of them like Alex Galchenyuk, Matt Dumba, Morgan Reilly, Griffin Reinhart and Mikhail Grigorenko were of the top-10 variety.

With the Habs picking third overall next Friday, they are certainly doing everything they can to properly evaluate the prospects.

In addition to the combine, there was a rumour floated that Marc Bergevin has offered P.K. Subban to the Oilers for the No.1 overall pick. That would give Montreal the first and third pick overall.

The Oilers said no. Or so the story goes.

But can you imagine that? Montreal picking first and third? Now this is, of course, just a rumour, but if these are the kind of moves that Bergevin is going to try and make, I think fans will end up being plenty happy.

Don't you?

Wow, you think fans would be happy trading PK Subban?
I would think you would ask for more than a number 1 overall for a young d-man of that caliber.
I think Yakupov will be a very good player but he's not likely to be an elite forward.
From what I can tell many experts (outside of Montreal) think Subban will be a Norris candidate for many years and has already been mentioned as a possibility for Team Canada in Sochi.
Unless PK does not want to play for Therrien, which I guess is a possibility.
Personally, I would think we could get a more established young star forward if we are really trading Subban.

The fans would e outraged right away if Subban was traded but could possibly change their minds in the long run if it all worked out.
Let's say we used the first pick for Yakupov and the third for Dumba. Would those two prospects be worth parting ways with Subban? Dumba is said to be the full package but you're always gambling when you choose a prospect over an already established star on the rise.
If there is any truth to this rumor I'm glad the oilers declined but at the same time it is interesting to see that Bergevin is willing to make big moves.

@sean

Problem, with that logic is that we can draft Dumba anyway. So in a hypiotehtical what if Yakupov is a bust or goes back to Russia.

Would fans we better off with just Dumba or Dumba and Subban?

Not worth the risk. Subban is our best Dman so if Edmonton wants him let's discuss the #1 plus who else?

@Bryan
I was just exploring the possibility of drafting both but I agree that having Dumba as well as Subban would be better than having just Dumba.

But I would also only draft Dumba if we had two high picks seeing as how I feel a forward - specifically a center - is what we need most and should be our top priority.

I'm not necessarily saying that fans will be happy with Subban being dealt. But IF this is true, it shows that Bergevin, unlike his predecessor, is willing to make bold moves. That is really what you need to build a winner in today's NHL. Vision, creativity, and balls iof steel.

@KP

Enough with the logic !!!!

I've been saying that forever.....a GM with balls not afraid to pull the trigger instead of trading 5 pennies for a nickel.

If this was my show the answer is simple. Try to get Yakupov but Subban is not part of any package. If they want Subban then overpay and throw in someone like MPS. I know it's one sided but that's the only way I part with Subban.

With the 3rd pick you are taking Murray if he's on the board and if not then one of Galchenyuk or Grigorenko. I think Grig is getting alot fo bad press for no reason.

I really like the idea of Galchenyuk with the 3rd pick.
Not sure the bad press is for no reason. It seems to be a consensus among scouts that he can become lazy and float way too much. Plus there is the fear of the KHL offering him a contract that dwarfs the Rookie cap limit.

I would trade Subban but only if it is bringing in an elite scorer with size and grit like a Corey Perry or a real number 1 d-man like Shea Weber.
If one of those teams had serious cap issues it is a possibility.

@HH: Good point re: trading Subban. The Habs need a legit, top-line center (for the first time since Damphousse and Muller!), and the only way to get that is likely to included in the deal. I'd also make a move like that.
