Press Release - Habs Recall Ryan White and Ian Schultz

Canadiens recall Ryan White and Ian Schultz from the Hamilton Bulldogs

MONTREAL (February 12, 2012) – The Montreal Canadiens announced tonight that right wingers Ryan White and Ian Schultz have been recalled from the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs. Both players will be at the Canadiens’ morning skate tomorrow, and will be available for the night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Assigned to the Bulldogs last February 6 for conditioning purposes, White notched five points (4 goals, 1 assist) in four games with Hamilton this season. He recorded 10 shots on goal, 26 penalty minutes and maintained a +2 plus/minus differential. The 23-year old forward has yet to play a game with the Canadiens in 2011-12 due to a sports hernia suffered during the team’s training camp, last September.

The 6’00’’, 188 lbs forward entered his third NHL season in 2011-12. In 43 career regular season games White has registered seven points (2 goals, 5 assists), 117 hits and 54 penalty minutes.

A native of Brandon, Manitoba, White was the Canadiens’ fourth pick (third round, 66th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Schultz produced 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) in 36 games with Hamilton this season. The 22-year old forward added 56 shots on goal, 83 penalty minutes and displayed a +3 plus/minus differential.

In 81 career games with the Bulldogs in the AHL, Schultz posted 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists). The 6’02’’, 201 lbs forward added 132 penalty minutes. Schultz played with Calgary in the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2006-07 to 2009-10, collecting 127 points (55 goals, 72 assists) and 405 penalty minutes in 196 games.

A Calgary-native Schultz was acquired from the St. Louis Blues with Lars Eller in return for Jaroslav Halak, on June 17, 2010.

Saw Schultz and White play on Saturday against the Marlies...not impressed other then both are tough as nails. Schultz got into a scrap at the end of the second and White wanted to go with Khadri but he waited until the rest of the team jumped White then got brave once the ref separated everyone. Either way, if we are looking for toughness that's what they bring. What about Leblanc and Palushaj? Maybe I missed somewhere that they got sent down...if not, now who is injured....?

White has 4 goals in 4 games since going to the AHL so I think it is difficult to swallow that all he provides is toughness.

As for Schultz there is no arguing that he was brought up to provide some toughness but by that same token he has gone from the 13th forward with the team to now being used as a 3rd line RWer on the checking line. His game has actually improved quite a bit from where he started last season.

So yes toughness is the primary reason but both of these guys appear to at least have the ability to play a regular shift as well.

@Bryan: That's what I've always liked about White...he's like a poor man's Aaron Asham. In addition to toughness, White can also play hockey. Plus he skates like the wind.

I think it was a big loss to the club that he didn't play at all this season. He is/should be part of their future, imo.
